  1. Of course there was loads of music from 1963 onwards that could be classed as Northern Soul. It got played on the Northern Soul scene as it developed. I don't agree Northern Soul 'existed and we put our stamp on it'.
  2. Cultural Appropriation -Yes. There was no Northern Soul before about 1970. R & B and soul yes. No Americans i know ever went consistently to hear music at a venue(s) from 2am to 8am as a group of people. Neither did they mobilise in terms of travelling to hear that music from one town to another. The music of "Black America" was never put together by DJ's in a way that Northern Soul did 'in the first instance'. Northern Soul was as much a movement as a 'scene'. If someone has taken it and re-purposed it for their own grandizement, then...yes it's Cultural Appropriation.
  3. Thundermug...nice to see one has turned up on JM's auction this week. First time i've seen one.
  4. I for one am glad you enjoyed it. Also pretty "brave" for being 1 of 1 (presently). It's not for me though.
  5. Line up for Tribune 'army of love' as Monarchs was... Porgy Williams, Otis Sanders, Richard & John Parks, and William Griffin. Release date is as said probably 1962 ( no later, but possibly late 1961. The were working as a group from 1960).
  6. I asked because i was always an early leaver, about 4.30m (on the limited occasions i did go, upto mid/Late 1974) and one time had to get someone (Harry or Gerry i guess) to let me out. Other few times i left early, i met lads coming the other way i.e. IN.
  7. when you say 'got in', was it legit?
  8. is there anybody (obviously attendees', and not special queue occurences,in the sincerest sense, still alive) who went to a Casino allnighter who has any recollections of the 'lastest time' you ( he, she) got in (legit).
  9. IF...(i'm not 100% sure), Penny Lewis and James Aaron were in the TKO's, then i do believe Penny went on to become a Realtor, and James did lead vocals with Sonny Lewis & the Movement at a lunchtime Soul and Blues Festival In the Park ( Concourse, Golden Gate Park) in 1971.
  10. doesn't 'up north' depend on your geographical starting point...unless perhaps your starting point is the outer hebrides?,then maybe up north is the Artic. I guess 'up north' to me (a woolly back Manc) is anywhere past Preston ( east & west).
  11. You are right of course. But Cultural appropriation is everywhere, and NS is the newsest incarnation of it. Happy to hear you keep calling it out.
  12. this is the most likely answer... https://www.45cat.com/record/nc638603uk

  17. Someone will be telling me next they put red ( tomato) sauce on bacon butties, instead of brown sauce of course.
  18. assuming Mel Williams is Melvin Williams, as opposed to their being two Mel(vin) Williams, then he could also be the co-owner of Musette Records. you can find more here https://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/musettearticle.htm
  19. i fear i'm 1 of 1 here ... Carstairs
  20. custom recording co inc was also Schafer's ( prexy). I think Chester & Charles defence against piracy was some 'loop hole' about state law versus fed law jurisdictions on recordings made after Feb 1972. Custom recording co inc, manfuctured 8 track tapes principally.
  21. cheers everyone who joined in. Sherlock advises me that a wild ass guess based on 56 replies with a few multiples & a couple of dupes, so say 80 in total.
