  1. i have some of The Ethics sides...so in my database i have this (almost certaily gleened originally from BB, CB or RW. Kas-Mo was Ed KASloff and Jimmy MOton. a single by Floyd Henry was their first. They picked up a dozen sides from G&H.
  2. this is a tricky one. I thought maybe 'the other half of the writing team', Martin Siegel might come up trumps... but not sure. Either way, there may be leads here... 1. another Helios on AR Studios is by Wiess & English, by Ronnie Dio etc -BUT this isn't the voice on the 1968 "I want you.." 2. Helios prexy was Claus (Klaus) Ogerman, and Scott English was for a time the GM of Glamorous Music/Productions (Helios). 3. Scott turns up on many sides with Martin Siegel. 4. Claus Ogerman turns up on a number of joint sides with all those above.
  3. By Joey: Two tone tonic suits with three button jackets and a silk pocket square, Levi Sta-Pres keks, Jaytex shirts and V neck slipovers. Nice! We may have been poor, but we were still smart most of the time! Like me back then, you were obviously taken under the wings of the "big" lads. We were pretty similar I think, save for the pint. You couldn't hold a pint of "mixed", I couldn't hold a pint of "brown and mild"! Lol. Happy days. By me: yes i think we were pretty similar.
  4. I got sent this picture yesterday, by email. (me on the right) In 1970 The Thompson Arms was (to us) just a normal pub. I always remember it had Fireman’s helmets adorning the place. I guess because it was so close to London Rd Fire Station. The pub sat at the corner of Chorlton St bus station – so it was a 5 mins walk to Whitworth St. The pint isn’t mine. I couldn’t even hold a pint let alone drink a full one. It’s passed to me purely for the photo. That i do remember. It’s likely to have been Brown Split with Bitter. That’s what the “older lads” drank. Pete (left) and Fred (middle) were “older lads”. They weren’t (what i believe are now called ‘faces’) but they knew nice people who knew other nice people (not the villainous variety) so could get you in places. I put the picture at about 1970...but not sure.
  5. i'm not sure how far you may want to travel. but Denton Labour Club ( M/Cr) do a Motown/Soul night. They also do a Northern night (separatly) I've never been to the former...but i have to the later, and it's v.g. hope this helps. good luck

  7. and now('ish) -on the right
  8. 1st pre-wigan...i think 2nd before going to Mecca...i think
  9. I can't help you with the lady herself...and you may already know this...but Don. L. Wilson formed his West Coast label, Wilstone Records. As a piano player in the sixties he crafted some very fine instrumental ballads. and hired singers. This World Is Ours, I'm Coming Home, + 8 or so others, and the two sides of which Esther appears. Apparently the inspiration for all this was Berry Gordy's success.

    RIP Aretha

R.I.P. Aretha (another star that it's enough to know her Christian name to know who is being spoken about) my favourite.
  11. Ironic there was a Police Ball at the Emp.
  12. the building... there was a beautiful stained glass window where the light shone through
  13. I'll see your one ...and raise you two.
  14. Hi, Ben got back to me via PM, and he's OK that i share that with SS.
  15. I wasn't a member of SS the first time this topic came around... so i know it's an old topic recently resurrected by Paul. I can't explain what Northern Soul is - but for me -You know it's Northern Soul when... When you wait eagerly to greet the postman to deliver the import record you won on bid. Because you don’t want him to drop it through the letterbox in case he damages it. When you’re in a supermarket or elevator and ‘a tune’ comes on -and you look around to see who else ‘gets it’ - and you spot someone who has, and you both smile. When you go to a N.S. venue and you are on your own – but you are not lonely. When you hear a stranger say to you... “you into Northern Soul then” - and you just want to run away.Or When someone you don’t know starts talking about Frank Wilson “DILYIID”. When it makes you cringe when someone says “yeah Northern Soul, 4 beats to the bar, repeated”. When it doesn’t have to be a way of life – but it’s OK if it is your way of life. When you know the difference between SKF’s and KFC...but these days you’d sooner have the latter. When your partner says “so you’ve not bought another record, have you”? When every pub that advertises a “Northern Soul" night AND also advertises it along with an accompanying Motown night is to be avoided. And you have to be restrained from having a word with the licensee. When you listen to “that record” and you’re fighting back the tears of emotion. Or “that record” comes on and you just have to dash to dance (if it’s a dance floor – so much the better). When you’re asked to describe a NS record -and you can’t- but you just know when you’ve heard one...even if it’s for the first time.
  16. Northern Connections #16 Benjamin and the... There’s been many a thread about the ‘survival’ of the NS scene on SS. 'A youth culture left in the hands of old men' to name just one. Well... if these guys have anything to do with it, it will flourish. (This sentiment also extends to the likes of Secret Stash, Hayley Records, Diggin’ Deep, Timmion, and others who are making ‘new’ N.S. music ). Ben Pirani “It’s Understanding” b side. Wouldn’t have been out of place had it been spun at a 1970’s Mecca night. Note : I did leave messages for Ben Pirani at Soul Source and Bandcamp – but hey he’s a busy guy, right? added by site to accompany the above....

  18. I know it doesn’t help find the record, and I guess you might know all of this already...but ...when i researching Northern Connections #4 (soul source article March 21, 2017) my conclusion was The Ster-phonics and The Sterophonics was one in the same. And that Charles Stokes ex wife Connie(?), + Marlen (?) and Charlette(?) made up the group.
  19. I was recently in conversaion when i said "i'd seen a boot-of-a-boot for a higher price than the boot (but not the original)". If you get my drift. I now wonder if i dreamt it?- and there are any boots-of-boots! besides which, what is the highest priced boot anyway? if indeed there is such an animal?
  20. Have a look at Northern Connections #7. June 2017.in soul source articles. Don’t know if it answers your question.. but if you are a La Reine fan then it should at least be of interest
