  1. this 45 may not have surfaced if it wasn't for Chuck Barksdale. He got Calvin Carter to sign them- (god bless Boba for his interviews.) The Dontells.
  2. uplifting...coming home...meeting ya girl again....
  3. Dick Griffey and the Whispers rush-released and changed the “ending lyrics” from ‘Oh by the way tell our next door neighbors their son got blown away' –TO- ‘their son will be home anyday’. Why? – because as they were in the recording studio a Vietnam peace settlement was announced.
  4. I was playing out some stuff today and realised i had a fair amount that were Vietnam related. I'm sure there are many more. Here’s a few i picked out of mine.... What's in yours? The Creations -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apl4mE7qLis Brothers of Soul -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHdD3Of-ijA The Extentions -
  5. A slight depature for those interested i such things ( Lucinda Slim). KB notes from various sources that sit along the Lp in my db. Some songs written by Lucinda Slim and Keb Darge. Her friendship Keb Darge (they met in the early 90's) led to 2 compilation albums and numerous DJ-residencies alongside Darge throughout London, such as the long established Deep Funk night at Madame Jojo's. Next to recording and touring the world with Zap Mama for almost 2 decades she's also shared the stage with Youssou N'Dour, Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Sharon Jones. All this time she's been an avid record collector, with a clear preference for northern soul, deep funk and rhythm & blues. Her very first solo release "All This Time", turned out to be modfather Paul Weller's favorite tune for his Mojo Magazine top 5 in 2009. During a stay in Belgium, she assembled a top notch 4-man band, went through arrangements and rehearsals and recorded a solid album live in just 2 days. The Haggis Horns later added their magic in Leeds (UK). The band represents Belgium's finest musicians : New Orleans Jazz-aficionado Frederik Vandenberghe on drums and percussion, groove expert Matthias Debusschere on bass, key wizard Peter Lesage (Jesse Boykins III, Moiano) on piano & Wurlitzer and jazzcat Bruno De Groote on guitar. Production and mixdown were handled by krewcial (BBE, Blue Note Records). Performing with the UK's premier horn section The Haggis Horns (Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamiroquai) and touring with Sharon Jones & The Dapkings gave Lucinda the experience and final push to record her own proper solo album. The album features 8 songs. Co-written with Keb Darge and Gabriel Roth from Daptone Records, including cover versions of "Two Winters Long" by Irma Thomas and "You Don't Mean It" by Towanda Barnes.

  7. i don't know if this qualifies as new(new)....(i know it's the extended backing track of The Capitols' 'Don't say maybe baby'), it certainly qualifies by date 2017. and i like it, and have it.

  11. yes you might be right there; Plato =Plato Theopholos ( maybe weird, i know...but it could be so-OR- it could be a psudo based on Greek philisophy). He (Plato Prexy) and Ron Bollon(VP) had two labels-Nadine and Format. I don't know if there were any releases?
  12. and very good it was too, as was Chris's set.
  13. Take some some comfort it’s not confined to just you...or just in the ‘Wants’ section. it’s everywhere- folks who ask for identification of artists from lyrics, info on labels, artists, prices, writers, producers.....
  14. I'm not quite sure where this thread is up to...so i could be wide of the mark re my response, but here goes. Isn’t this the same point as Roy Kean was making about the "prawn sandwich brigade"? If you went to Old Trafford or Kippax (6 or 600 times haha) in the late 60’s thru 70’s and sometime beyond. And also went to The Cathedral (or the other venues), during the same period, then you can’t deny authenticity...no matter what’s played. Football or Music. It doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the one you choose, or both. It just means you make that choice. Me, although i like an occasional prawn sandwich, and am happy to see others eat them, i can’t get GB breaking Glyn Pardoe’s leg at OT out of my memory – same with the Music.
  15. this will be a good start for you... https://www.discogs.com/artist/1904976-The-Imperial-Cs

  19. It could be ( could be)..aka Stonye Figueroa is Barbara jean Cook. Lead singer with Otisettes ( from the johnny otis show). I think ( think) she also was a memebr of the Ikettes at some point.
  20. i have been biting my lip since this re-surfaced on SS (only for the fear of a bit of backlash) since the orig' post in 2012- and rarely, if ever do i comment on vocals/melody, etc, etc, (each to his/her own), and i don't wish to comment on any of that this time either...but what if it came to light that this was some obscure 'master tape' that had been resurrected, and lets say "re-purposed"-or as they say "sampled/ background" (pick any of many..e.g 5 wagers, Vows, Traits, etc , etc, etc). Would we feel the same about it? Hey...just a question. I'm not that taken with the track myself- But...you know i've heard worse "covers".
  21. Discogs has this same picture as 5 Wagers! My money is on Boba, of course.
  22. yes...he was a lot more than an organist. But you can find him on Lucky Cordell's outing ( Halo Records) 1964 -https://www.discogs.com/Lucky-Cordell-If-Jesus-Came-To-Your-House-Good-Morning-Lord/master/1464945
