  1. Northern Connections #21 Alphonso Hamilton, Captain Soul, Teri Thornton, The Black Masons ... Site note - The first Northern Soul Connection of 2020, now at #21 in this long running series from Ken B aka Soul Source member @Kenb and it's a big one It was an impromptu look at the sleeve credits of a 1963 LP titled 'Adventures in Negro History', Highlight Radio Productions HRP-101 that started this articles journey. In 1963 Jerry Blocker a part-time DJ on WCHD-FM began producing... ...what became a search For the people cited on those LP credits; Burniece Avery, Carl L. Porter, Jerry Blocker, Fred Flowerday, Jiam Desjardins, etc, turned into an epic that linked back in to the work of Alphonso Hamilton, Soular Music, Theme Prod, Jingles men, WCHB and WGPR radio stations, the first black-owned TV station, Al Abrams Motown PR, a Japanese bankers son and Japanese construction company, and then some ... There is no big reveal here. Albeit i shine some light on unnoticed detail, now exposed and connections made. Each person is rich in history. Each is remarkable. And each deserves a fuller treatment than i give here. I encourage you to search for it. Any corrections, or further enlightenment is encouraged and appreciated. 2. The bands ( both the Sensational Sounds & The Significants) essentially came from Lakewood High School. Joe Nero was Alvin's partner in building the 'record company'/label' Alesver's Records (at Alvin's home). Ervin Little had a 3 piece band The Chosen Few ( note; there are/were dozens of bands called Chosen Few), Some of these;George McIlroy bongo's,Johnny Union guitar,...as well as those already listed in the Significants line up above, made up the groups.
  3. they are...(L to R picture) Sylvia Robinson Edward Nesbitt Bev Dukes jo Ann Swain trumpet -johnnie Robinson, bass Guitar Hollis Burney. all at Alvin's (Miller) house. co-writer
  4. I was searching for something recently (unconnected to this story, but WCHB related), and realized i had this I then searched and found this thread on SS -Detroit Land Apples By Chalky, June 25, 2011...( and so thought i'd share it
  5. I'm pretty sure this is...his brothers Leonard, and J.C. (they played guitar and base respectively), - and Rudy Alverez drummer (not family). They also went under the heading '...and his Swinging Heavyweights'
  6. yes i know it's a pop tune... Interested in buying Donna Marie ‎– Man Killer / Eddie Wasn't There on Coral STOCK COPY- not promo. thanks ken
  7. It's always been a music and dance thing for me too. Never been into the 'group friends thing' - Not that, that is bad, just saying it wasn't/isn't me. And, I guess you are right in some respects...it is now an oldies led affair (inevitable really) - BUT that doesn't mean you still can't find the music venue, with like minded people. A nod, or a smile to a fellow dancer, that brings that collective consciousness (history) that carries the spirit of NS on without parody. As for progression, i'm not sure where you progress from and to - OR- where we have progressed from and to since '68 (or '73 if you're hung up on the Cathedral timescales). And the 'scene', i agree, is really a thing of the past that can only be timescaled for each individual e.g. some say it ended in '75, some say...etc.
  8. 09:50 ??? Female Group ? - don't recognise It's Peter Jarrett and The Fifth Circle- Run, Run, Baby, Run ( a Tommy James and the Shondells cut also from 1967).
  9. You can be over 60 and still a (moderately) good dancer. If you were (moderately)good when in your teens, it’s likely (unless health/mobility prevents) you still are. I am. Once I can’t dance is the day I stop attending.and I’m sure someone would have a quiet word with me before then. don’t make it an age thing.
  10. I’m out of the UK and just logged on to SS and saw this. Feel physically sick (really). god bless.
  11. site note to ken ken had to merge the two topics as one was an article comments it messed your words up so can you edit this and repost cheers mike
  12. I think...(think) some have shown up on Carolina, but i could be wrong
  13. Linda Griner (Lyn Roman) was once under surveillance by the FBI who thought she might be Angela Davis.
  14. I can't add anything for the artist Charles Farrington...but i can tell you a few things about International Record Co, Chicago. And maybe that will help you /others find Charles. International Record Co (IRC) operated (simultaneously addressed at times)from 1649 W.Evergreen, Chicago 60622 and 5619 W. Division, Chicago. The prexy was Vern Ruvalds, Chairman Jerome V. Man, GM Leonard March, sales mgr Bill Beyer. Vern Ruvalds was a respected music man and as early as 1962 addressed the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. These folks (some of) also had some connection with Winner Music (Dorothy March see Leonard March ref- also wrote and had Winner published credits). Vern was a hands-on engineer ;see The Chymes, 'Dancing Shoes', and owned Chicago Stereo Mastering. you can read other stuff about IRC (that isn't included in my bit) here -https://www.bsnpubs.com/chicago/irc/irc.html
  15. an age old problem... not suggesting you try this. from 1981.
  16. George and David were 'pretty tight' during 1967. The Parliaments did play with David, and Martha and the..., -AND it's well documented in George's biography about him & David (Sly Stone too) smoking crack. Of course, non of which means DR was in / or sang with The Fellows, and i don't think we'll ever know who lined-up on The Fellows 'Lets Make It Last'. although i accept it's probably a typo/mis-heard/error: still interesting...see ad David Ruffin new band The Fellows.
  17. Leicester Boys says "Anyway the discussion is like a recurring dream/nightmare and no doubt it will resurface again later". My nightmare is waking up in cold sweat because my wife has sold my records for the price i told her i'd payed for them.
  18. yes it may well do. But i do know David Ruffin's 'new group' were billed out for 2 shows at "The Soul Festival" at The Stanley Theatre as The Fellows. Same show was Jerry Butler, Unifics,The Dells. Perhaps it's all in the 'spelling'.
  19. The Fellows was David Ruffin's new group in 1968 ( and yes i know the Solid Hit date has it as 1967).
  20. i think it's David Ruffin, not George Clinton.
  21. I don't believe The Inspirations on Wand was same line up as The Rotations on Frantic's "(Put A Dime On) D9". Maybe the line-up on "Heartaches".
  22. see Northern Connections #20 on this site for Rotations on Frantic atb ken
