  1. i was reading 'setting the record straight' - Page 71: there is ticket picture and it reads "Northern Soul back to stay from......10 September, Studs Disco", Deansgate, Manchester ( opposite Kendals)" I'd always had a bier keller in my mind opposite Kendals? I've no recollection of Studs - anyone else?
  2. very interesting, thanks TLS/Amsterdam Russ + other folks. mine has been 'in & out' of it's sleeve a dozen times to follow this post
  3. It was. He also loved the film 'a taste of honey' which has in it a dance scene of Dora Bryan and her man-friend on the Ritz ballroom. Morrisey went on to gig at the Ritz. When the Temple of Convenience was just 'the bogs', you would get over-spill after closing at Rafters which was where Colin DJ'ed for a while ( and which was the former Takis, which was owned by the same brothers/family as TW), so maybe as someone said, Colin did take the Ritz ballroom back to his garden. P.S my recollection of the sound system (77/78) was that it was awful, but my mind has mushed since then...didn't go later,
  4. on reflection, it seems best let individuals do their own thing.
  5. might be the wrong forum...( if so Mike can you pls move it) @Mike but should we?-could we? do more as a Soul Source community. As a collective effort. I'm not brilliant with facebook ( not even on it), or twitter, etc, so can't administer a giving site, but would certainly 'give' if one was set up. Especially if it was a Soul Source thing. I guess the 'care' folks ( NHS, etc, ) would be good recipients. If a 99yr old chap can raise over £8 million, perhaps a few quid ( or maybe a few more, if already giving) from members might be nice. ?? best Kenb

  8. Northern Soul Connections #22 - Baltimore Site note - The most recent Northern Soul Connection of 2020, we are now at #22 in this long running series from Ken B aka Soul Source member @Kenb and this time around the focus is on Baltimore. Northern Connections #22 not just birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" Baltimore and its close surroundings was a hotbed for music that became popular for our genre of Soul. The rosta of artists, songwriters, producers, labels, studios, recordings, and music business men and women is a long one and includes the likes of A&D Booking, Soul House, Horizon House & Knights of Maryland Klu Klux Klan, Bay Sound, Recordings Inc, Collection & The Civics, as well as not so many non-music entities such as and Some familiar-some lesser known. Rod H. Armstrong and Ernie W. Donaldson had started out by attending parties together, and quickly turned that love into a business when they threw a Christmas Gala party in 1970. The second party they put on netted them $1000 which they invested in promoting teenage dances at The Famous Ballroom, in the 1700 Block of N. Charles St. They were both in their mid-thirties, and both worked at The Prudential Life Insurance Company of America, each earning $12K to $1 SK p.a. In 1971 they took a chance and formed A & D Booking Agency. In 1972 they signed Elanor Mills, The Titans, and The Soft-Tones (managed by Roe-Don Management Company, as too were Chang or & Co) and put Ira Glover on a 10 week tour of Canada leaving July 23rd. In 1973 they brought First Class together, and by 1975 they were grossing .... You can check out Kens other quality 21 Northern Connections all available via his 'activity' profile page, the link follows below... More articles from KenB

  10. mine are in Miami too. i guess it's all the Carolinasoul one's heading to the Uk?
  11. I'm not an expert on hooky, boots, and licensing, but the dubious looking ones (as listed in 45cat.com and above) are from almost certainly from the owner of Soulville who lived in England. (not the one we all know in Atlanta, GA and Greenville, SC, etc ) If you go on discogs and look at the labels Amba, Philadelphia Disco, Reggamite, plus some others inc Andee, you'll ventually see Soulville and you'll find Oscar Sam-Carrol/ Oscar Carrol jr.. you can also find him on Linked-in "I started this company as Soulville Music & Records in 1970 and now it's known as U-MEN(Group) and it's now run by my children, concentrating on the development of the Urban Black Music & Entertainment Industry..."
  12. I enjoyed reading that, thanks. If not already well known...i have a similar story on 'the new Supremes' of 1981.
  13. this topic may well have been done before...if so sorry with 14 days of lock-down i've got to the point where i'm throwing any records at my turntable i haven't played for years. i noticed on LP TML 11070 Diana Ross & The..... 'Live at Talk of the Town'...(i've not played this since about 1970) at Side One, Track 5, there is some preamble from Diana about the conductor, and then just a second or two before the song kicks in Diana says "Here is a nice sweet soft ballad from West Side Story", when in fact it is 'You Keep Me Hanging On'. I guess she did a West Side Story song at one of her shows when contracted to appear at TofTT and the engineers have just missed it. Oh how the QA at Motown would have jumped on this, had it been their's. what's your recording blooper memory.
  14. I don't want to add more rat holes to go down....but 1 J. Ross maybe Jerry Ross e.g. Bobby Hebb 'Sunny', Spanky and ..., etc 2. Penny Pendelton (if it is the bassist) used to club with a Dee King (not Dee Dee King) at the Pop for Champagne club on N. Sheffield Ave. 3. Alan Barcus, Bill Lundwall, and John Gillis used to gig around Indian (where Alan was from) as the Alan Barcus Trio back in 66/67. look for James Archer... hope it helps
  15. Linking back to my previous thread on Rocky Mount, etc. I do know a Charles O. Johnson was a radio station GM, commentator/DJ (a was possible involved in the purchase of WRSV. COJ senior's son was also called Charles (Chuck). I'm not sure who is in the photo ( i'm not disputing it COJ)...i just don't know. Hope it helps. Oh yes-BTW...he was for a time Mel & Tim's manager.
  16. You can find Cal on Discogs, but you won't see this there... Cal Brandon and the "Sound Manufuacturers" band formerly of the Clarence Carter show (and his backup band)., appeared at The Rocky Mount Fair North Carolina. Makes sense when you see where Cal's Hitman label recordings came from. something i found out when doing -
  17. Art Polhemus - There's a lot stuff known about him, and his partner Bob Wyld (Longhair Productions). e.g.Sandy & The Pebbles 'He's My Kind a Fella'
  18. i often cook Sunday lunch...Morther's Day too when we are not out at a pub/restaurant. So this year, in these times, i cooked again, and myself and my wife swapped lunch for presents at the doorstep. My son (in his 40's) left his Mum's presents on the doorstep & we wrapped his M/Day lunch to take away. Only sad thing... our daughter & children are too far for such possibilities .

  20. my (not so near to me) young neighbour took the trouble to call on us this morning. I'm of an age where it could i suppose be serious if i'm infected. She ( the neighbour) is of an age that gets a lot of criticism. Let's not lump everyone together.

  23. As often is the case...there is a much bigger story here. Here is a portion... Preston Chapman – producer of The Chantlers Cheslove (Ches-Love ‎– 2070-The Chantlers) Ruby and The Romantics were appearing at The Stardust Inn, Conchester Hwy/Flower Rd, Chester, PA. on 5th July 1968, Maxine Brown August 3rd, and the group Cheslove Revue on Nov 8th, and then the O-Jays the week after. In 1970, Preston L. Chapman was director of the Cheslove Musical Cultivation Studio (CMCS). The ambitions for the studio (which was initially under a program from the difficulties facing the Chester Home Improvement Project (Chips) was intended to create classes for kids to take vocal, instrument and choreography lessons. CMCS had been at 2330 W. 3rd St, and there had been various programs of cultural, business and industrial initiatives (e.g. ‘Black Table’, United Community Fund, The Wade House, etc) with I guess the ‘inevitable’ fall-outs, budget cuts, and so on. Maxine Brown’s 3rd Aug 1968 appearance at the Stardust Inn was in fact part of Greater Chester Movement (GCM) project ‘soulsville’ area youth program (nothing to do with Stax or any other soulsville). It was the second event of this type sponsored By the Stardust. The action centre for soulsville area youth program was at 634 Morton Ave. The proposed soulsville Jan 1969 ran for 6 months and a budget of $19,405. I think it is safe to say Preston Chapman led a colourful life. He was coach of Chester Red Sox semi-pro team in 1971. He stepped into the boxing ring to raise charity funds for the boy scouts back in 1974…and much more. As for The Chantlers record itself: fascinating that the Ches-Love ‘label graphics’-style & fonts are quite close to another from the area that I wrote about in Northern Connections 20, Ves-Thad 423. https://www.45cat.com/label/vesthadpennsylvania
