  1. Think maybe 1970/71 possibly spring/spring bank. Me (youngest by at least 18 months), Judith, Ash, Paul + 2 more (they did the Pontins booking), Train to squires gate, holed up at Pontins. Long walk up to Central Drive & Mecca. Back to Pontins, still 'up' at 3-4am in the chalet only to hear a knock on the door and 2 x 30yr old guys "saying" they were security. In they came, they stayed for at least an hour and we we're Shi**ing ourselves. But we just talked them silly bored, and they left. None of us got any sleep. In 70/71 it was just called rare soul not Northern Soul, so maybe it doesn't qualify.
  2. In March 1971 Rita was 'slatted' to marry jazz bassist Herman Wright ( maybe this was mis-reported at the time?), Of course it's possible she married at least twice, once to Wright & once Turrentine? here's a 1971 Pic.
  3. The various posts about record prices/values/collectors (e.g. subject: JM auction results) prompted me to kick this off. Posts about collectors are like posts about mythical creatures to me. I don't know any. And only know i'm not one, and just have/buy records to keep & play. I did note in JM 6th edition (2013) it says over 6K collectors had been added since edition 5 and there are about 700 pages of tightly listed 45's. So...What's the definition of a NS vinyl collectors? Is there one? I don't know, but am genuinely interested (no other motive here). I know some collect by label, some by artist, some by UK, etc, BUT particularly in the context of prices & values what constitutes a typical NS collector? Is it someone who has 100K records, 30K records? 5K records? Is it someone who has 10 records with a value of £100K?, £500K? Is there a 'collector scale', small, medium, large, v.large...off-the-scale Are collectors mostly DJ's? Can you be a collector if you have 1K, 3K, 5K, 10K records each under £30 each? Can you sell your only copies of a certain record ('rare/obscure') and still be considered a collector? Is it rarity/obscurity that determines your collector status? If collectors are buying and selling between themselves, is that collecting or just a transfer of an asset. What's typical of soul-source collectors? Is there a definition?
  4. We’ll I do know that Chino Feaster was billed as trio when ‘gigging’ in 1967.

  6. i enjoyed reading this, and i'm glad you went with your option to post "incomplete" as you say. I'm not of the caliber of your authorship but have and do face the same dilemma. In that, when researching, i end up with interesting morsels and a potpourri. Mostly on scraps of paper, a dozen notebooks, jottings, and so on. And i wonder whether to wait and develop them, or 'publish'/post. I'm gettin' on (in age) which also means i make mistakes, so i guess at some stage i'm just going to put it all out there for someone else to take on maybe. yours was a nice read, cheers.

  16. Thank you for the correction. @George G I hold the people i write about in high esteem- so it's gut-wrenching when i make a mistake like this. Why i put the two Sonny Harris's as one, i'll never know. A silly mistake. I sincerely apologise to anyone connected with either Sonny Harris. I'll amend the error, and ask Mike(admin) to repost the new version. NB. Even though there were two men with "Sonny" in their name, each living & working only 200 miles from each in Ohio, and each recording a 45. I am very persuaded they are two different men.
  17. came across this thread looking for something else, thought you may like to know a bit more... Garry Garnette, ‘have you heard the news’, Capilano Records ‎– CAPS 158, composer Tom Baird. The Untouchables, Garry Garnette’s 1969 own group of musicians (lead & base guitars, drums, organ & piano) may be the backing on ‘have you heard…’, 45cat has it as 1969. In 1969 Garry was 27yrs old. Tom Baird drowned in 1976, he was 32 yrs old. There are a couple of Tom Baird composer sides (including ‘have you heard the news’) that reference Joani(e). He was married to Joani. Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan he (Garry) was a construction worker and one time logging truck driver. He did quite an extensive circuit tour of New Mexico & Texas. Apparently whilst in San Antonio he beat the US 1962 quick draw (think cowboys) champ by 1/100th of a second.

  20. That's the Rock-A-Teens number. The Rock-A-Teens filed a suit against Roulette & McGraw for breach of contract & unpaid royalties -$25K I have the band members full names(not just there go by names) somewhere.
  21. During the late 40’s through to mid 1950’s The Old Dominion Barn Dance ran every Saturday night as a radio show in Richmond’s WRVA theatre. Run by ‘Sunshine Sue’, Mary Higdon Workman (prexy of Southland Shows Inc) & her hubby ‘Big Sugarfoot’ (John Workman). It was very successful and ran coast-to-coast on the CBS network. Soul Bros Inc, Salem Records PM-500, Tear Drops, Sugarloaf Pub Co, vocal Carter Brothers. The ‘Little Carter Brothers’ (1950) one of whom needed to stand on a soap box to reach the microphone, rendered mainly a repertoire of hymns when they appeared on the Saturday night shows. If they are the same ‘Carter Brothers’ then it took a further 15/16 years to cut “Tear Drops”, and I guess they were teenagers/early twenties by then. Salem Others Shirlee Hunter’s first single, “I Can't Do A Thing With My Heart / Loneliness Is Falling All Around” on Salem M516, 1963, coincided with her last appearance on what was then being called The New Dominion Barn Dance, the theatre was due for demolition in October of the same year. She (maybe like the Carter Brothers) had started her career on the show back in 1956. Little Cindy also released on Salem 2515, 1967 & Mart 3510, 1961. Little Cindy (Saul) A.“Happy Birthday Jesus” B: “He's Around (When Everybody Turns You Down)” 1959, also cut a record in 1959 called ‘Shabby’. Across the State June was known as ‘Shabby’ month. Shabby was donated free by Columbia and George Donald McGraw’s pubbery (Sugarloaf Pub Co to name just one) on behalf of the Virginia Society for Crippled Children & Adults who sold each copy for $1.
