The JM auction of Detroit Soul made me go back over some Connecticut stuff i have, and i 'discoged' Aristocrats. I'm reasonable confident Aristocrats -'Let's Get Together Now' are not the Aristocrats as those described on Discogs. I know of an Aristocrats from Wallingford, Connecticut managed by Ed Read but doubt very much they are the 'LGTN' Aristocrats. ( happy to be proved wrong though). So any ideas on who they are?
-
you may be (politely) looking down the wrong end of the telescope. do you have 15% of JM's auction tracks he lists every week/two weeks? Just a thought
-
nothing against you or your bid (your money, your choice) But i can only dream of such things.

Thanks Benji- that's something new for me. All-Music (credit to them)... A Hundred Pounds of Clay: The Best of Gene McDaniels [Capitol] Album Information released 1992, which says recorded date March 1st 1962 to Sept 10th 1965. So... as you say that seems to make it first to master/tape. There's also a EMI's 1991 Ledgendary Master series which is the same in track selections.
-
Hi Benji, which do you mean? Strange Neighborhood or New Neighborhood.
-
Thank you. Fraternity release was Nov 1967. There was additional copyrights on Bob Perper's Strange Neighborhood in 1984 (Yvette Ball - maybe a Pseudonym). Which i think also appears on In The Naked City, Various Artists, Kent CDKEND 299. I'll take this into the article in some way.

I’m still in draft on one of my Northern Connections articles about the Imaginations. Their identity (picture), etc. It’s a curious tale...so I’m looking for any questions or contributions from the Soul Source members to make sure I cover it off as best I can. obviously, i’ve Seen general stuff on Discogs, and such, so (politely) no need to repeat that. TIA. best kenb

...yes i got 2 of my Jazz titles and artists mixed up. I had Nancy with 'Broadway with Love' & 'Moving Along' with Wes Montgomery shuffled together.
-
@Amsterdam Russ Ignore this...I'm mistaken. apologies
-
there was a 1968 LP (obscure) Moving Along by Nancy Wilson. Whether this 45 is taken from that i'm not sure.

Top Night, tinged with sadness. I only knew him as Kevin. For the last five years (pandameic allowing) he'd sit next to me at Ukranian Soul Club nights. Early doors we'd spend about 20 mins talking about the music. That's all. Many more at the club and beyond, knew him much better than me. He passed away in early Jan. What can i say. He was very likable. I liked him. I'll miss him. He'd have loved the 5th Annversary at Ukranian last night. Kevin Cannon R.I.P.

Project Awakening - Black History Month USA February Also known as African-American History Month, it was first observed by students and faculty at Kent State University in 1970. In 1976 it evolved into a month-long celebration and became a national holiday when President Gerald Ford recognized “the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavour throughout our history” in a speech to mark the United States Bicentennial. Moses B. Norman-Orangeburg changed his life. February 1968. A Bowling Alley operated on a segregated basis was the angst of S.C. State College and Claflin College students. Attempts to integrate the bowling alley had culminated in protest and disturbances and the college administration were calling on the 1,500 S.C. State College students to remain on Campus. S.C. National Guardsman were called up to quell what were called riots. Accounts say 3 dead and at least 37 injured, 27 of whom were released in the custody of the State College infirmary. All the killed or wounded were Black, shot by S.C. Highway Patrolmen. Moses B. Norman was standing in front of Lowman Hall on the Campus that night. He drove some wounded to Orangeburg Hospital. Henry Smith, one of the dead was a friend of Moses. Both Chemistry majors. Partly from that experience came project Awakening 1970/71. As he says ‘a way to channel anger and frustration into constructive action’. The Moses Dillard and Martha Starr ‘Cheating, Teasing, & Misleading’ record appeared on Awake AK101 (Nov 1971 date on 45cat.com) and also on Bert Bern’s Shout S-248 label (Jan 1972 date on 45cat.com), As far as I can tell both takes are identical. Recorded at Rod Kinder’s Spring St, Atlanta Kin-Tel Sound Studios it subsequently led to a purchase deal with Eddie Briscoe & Ilene Berns (as too did Shout S-253 ‘I Promise to Love You’ featuring Peabo Bryson). Dillard had at least two labels, Piedmont Records and Brighter Day Records- Dillard & Boyce (Disco-Gospel). In a 1979 interview Dillard said “I plan to delete Gospel in favour of the contemporary sound of spiritual consciousness” [Source Walter Carter, Disco Producers Make New Nashville sound]. A tag line not dissimilar to that of AWAKE AK101 “a new sound of consciousness”. The First of the intended seven Awake shops opened in Oct 1971 at 211 Waller Ave, Greenwood S.C. The shops were an extension of Moses B. Norman’s Project Awakening, which was an idea that had come about from his time as youth director of the Greenwood County Chapter of NAACP. So, was Awake AK101 & Moses Dillard in some way helping out project Awakening? After all, he (Moses Dillard) had been executive director and co-founder of the 1970 Miss Black South Carolina pageant and a vice president of NAACP. Moses B Norman who had run the local pageant took the project Awakening group to Greenville where they staged the State pageant. In return Moses Dillard teamed up with project Awakening becoming one of the five state directors. Shop opens in Oct 1971, AK101 releases in Nov 1971…serendipity. KenB Feb 2022 added by site

"14 fab pictures from Wigan Casino allnight in 1975"

Hiya, I don't say they are from an all-nighter. I say they advertised the 2nd anniversary All-Nighter (1975). -

I don't know if the Pic's were staged or not, or mid-week or not...perhaps shortly after the doors opened at 12.30. The badges aren't photo-shopped. These (most) same pics turn up advertising the 2nd Anniversary in 1975. -
you may be correct. I agree the Bee Gee's songs prior to Jive Talkin' were not in demand anywhere really between 1971'ish-1975. But can you be sure 'as an acetate of an unknown group' this didn't get played?
-
Wrt Jive Talkin’, Not sure I get this? Jive Talkin’ was 1975, and Saturday Night Fever was 1978. It may well be Stig visited WC (although I doubt it).
-
a good friend sent me this. Now then...unless you heard it, and knew who it was (at the time) then it doesn't prove it was spun, BUT it does prove it was thought about. If you were the DJ, would you put your hand up to playing it?
-
don't forget after their late 60's success The Bee Gee's had been in the doldrums (almost untouchable by the Record Co's). So although we immediately think Night Fever now, it didn't exist then. Nobody would have been running around saying 'that's the Bee Gee's' isn't it. Therefore you may hardly have give it a notice, put 2+2 together, thought twice, missed it, if it did get a debut in 1975...even for a moment.
-
i know a lot is attributed to WC that never was...but has/did anyone hear the Bee Gee's Jive Talkin' played in 1975 at WC -as an acetate? (probably unknown as The Bee Gee's).

could they have been Curtis Mayfield's band? He did have one at that time for concerts and such.

Firstly, i've not been to an all-nighter for a very, very long time. Secondly the NS nights i do attend are North of England...so my experience may be skewed. What i have noticed though is that Women at least match the number of Men on the dance floor. Quite a reversal of tradition and (for me) an intersting social change perhaps.
