  1. @Benji- short answer No.

When i spoke (& from my email notes) to Tom DeCillis his memory was a bit vague and i didn't press him on Sound of Soul. Tom was into a lot of stuff at the time.Tom's musical interests during that time was with Bernadette Carroll-The Angels, PM for ARC recording artists The Dynamics, had been Astro's promo man, Julia records, T-D, Bobby Lee, and so it goes on.

Ed Leipzig would probably have been the man to ask...unfortunately i didn't!

    clarification

I'm always surprised by the number of Sportspeople connected to Northern 45's. Either artists, writers, arrangers or publishers. Mostly men, and often College Football, Basketball, etc.

Just recently bought Don Ray Samson to find out he was a good american football player at San Bernadino Valley College (SBVC). A top pass receiver-pro prospect signing for the Montreal Allouettes 1965, etc). Jimmy Webb (writer of Don's 'Baby Come Back') also went to SBVC at the same time.

There must be 100's? some obvious - some not so

Put them up...perhaps leave out the obvious ( avoid swamping)

I thought i'd start a new uncluttered topic which hopefully answers some of the questions in the OP above.

Two groups; Ivor (Sheff) & The Ibids & King Curtis & The Nobel Knights make up the King Sound Interpreters. Mostly from Charleston High School, West Virginia.

Two of the female (lead) vocals on 'You've Got Soul' are Linda Davis & Joyce Laurie of Lower Donally Hollow. They are two of an original four female vocalists 'backed up' by the 'band'. The KSI manager was Bill Cain.

King Curtis & The Interpreters would often back up James & Bobby Purify, and The Tams & The Tips...hence 'Hi Note' credit.

That same year May 1967 three West Virginia bands tied for 1st Place in a contest sponsored by Vox (amplifiers, etc) for the chance to win a movie contract with American International Films. The three joint winners recordings were made and sent to Hollywood, California. The bands were The King Curtis Caravan of Stars (Charleston), The Majestics (Charleston), and The Explosive Dynamiks (Huntington). An 'unfound' (I think) record by The King Sound Interpreters may exist called 'I Can Be Happy' but i've never tracked it down...unless it became a later reincarnation (1970) by Don & Debbie on the AMOS label? a fancyful idea i know!

The King Sound Interpreters line up;Curtis Price lead guitar,Ivor Sheff organ,Morris Hambleton sax, Billy Hambleton Trombone, Steve White trumpet,Roger Ledbetter drummer,Kai Haynes bass guitar.

Today, I saw Little Ron & The Esquires up for sale on Steve's site and popped on Discogs to check some discography stuff.

Discogs has other Charade label artists listed (discogs: label connected with Ray Baradat (Raymond A. Baradat) saxophonist of The Charades ).

Well...that (connection) might be (but i seriously doubt it). Little Ron & Esquires Charade label of 1963 was the first AND ONLY Release on the label until 1987.

We all know Discogs can be so wrong...but equallly very useful (so no attack on it/them/contributors) and I wouldn't normally bother...but i was there.

Saw Edwin several times. My first visit to The Wheel saw him perform . Seem to recall him passing through the football like crowd to get on stage , dressed in a Parker 😀. Must have been 1970.

Met him backstage at Manchester Free Trade Hall....remember discussing his duet album with Blinky, which seemed to  surprise him ( that I had it) and probably a change from the usual Ric Tic/NS conversations he no doubt had many times.

Also, saw him in a club in Chorlton Manchester ( double bill with the re-assembled Elgins). Recall being in the gents WC when Edwin arrived in the next stall to me.

    Happy Days

    Chortling club…maybe Brown’s?

  6. I guess typical YC’s weren’t entry to Soul for us, ( me) but maybe bizarrely to some on here “nights” out in Church premises put on as YC type “do’s”. My Memory plays tricks but a few I can think of we’re St Bernadette’s, St Kentigerns. Also, as has been on topic before, the small “ clubs above Burton the Taylor’s and many others”. Including pubs…yup pubs.

we would never go to a “table tennis” sort of YC.
