  1. happy birthday- don't i owe you a lemonade? If so, Saturday
  2. I'm always surprised by the number of Sportspeople connected to Northern 45's. Either artists, writers, arrangers or publishers. Mostly men, and often College Football, Basketball, etc. Just recently bought Don Ray Samson to find out he was a good american football player at San Bernadino Valley College (SBVC). A top pass receiver-pro prospect signing for the Montreal Allouettes 1965, etc). Jimmy Webb (writer of Don's 'Baby Come Back') also went to SBVC at the same time. There must be 100's? some obvious - some not so Put them up...perhaps leave out the obvious ( avoid swamping)
  3. I haven't Mal...but expect Brewtown are still up to their eyes in the mess they described above.
  4. Motown Museum. You can't stop progress, and i guess it's a good thing...but i can't help feeling it might lose something. Not sure i'd get the same feeling about the place if i visited it when done in 2024. nostalgia hey, it's a bummer! https://eu.freep.com/story/entertainment/music/brian-mccollum/2022/09/07/motown-museum-expansion-renderings/65742369007/
  5. after 2 misses (monthly) really getting withdrawel symptoms now. hope to be back this time.
  6. I thought i'd start a new uncluttered topic which hopefully answers some of the questions in the OP above. Two groups; Ivor (Sheff) & The Ibids & King Curtis & The Nobel Knights make up the King Sound Interpreters. Mostly from Charleston High School, West Virginia. Two of the female (lead) vocals on 'You've Got Soul' are Linda Davis & Joyce Laurie of Lower Donally Hollow. They are two of an original four female vocalists 'backed up' by the 'band'. The KSI manager was Bill Cain. King Curtis & The Interpreters would often back up James & Bobby Purify, and The Tams & The Tips...hence 'Hi Note' credit. That same year May 1967 three West Virginia bands tied for 1st Place in a contest sponsored by Vox (amplifiers, etc) for the chance to win a movie contract with American International Films. The three joint winners recordings were made and sent to Hollywood, California. The bands were The King Curtis Caravan of Stars (Charleston), The Majestics (Charleston), and The Explosive Dynamiks (Huntington). An 'unfound' (I think) record by The King Sound Interpreters may exist called 'I Can Be Happy' but i've never tracked it down...unless it became a later reincarnation (1970) by Don & Debbie on the AMOS label? a fancyful idea i know! The King Sound Interpreters line up;Curtis Price lead guitar,Ivor Sheff organ,Morris Hambleton sax, Billy Hambleton Trombone, Steve White trumpet,Roger Ledbetter drummer,Kai Haynes bass guitar.
  7. Spent my birthday 29 Aug looking towards Messonghi, Corfu
  8. I don’t agree with those that say No Motown - No Northern. There was plenty of label action that would have taken us there. and in general it’s Coke or Pepsi / McDonald’s or Burger King.
  9. Today, I saw Little Ron & The Esquires up for sale on Steve's site and popped on Discogs to check some discography stuff. Discogs has other Charade label artists listed (discogs: label connected with Ray Baradat (Raymond A. Baradat) saxophonist of The Charades ). Well...that (connection) might be (but i seriously doubt it). Little Ron & Esquires Charade label of 1963 was the first AND ONLY Release on the label until 1987. We all know Discogs can be so wrong...but equallly very useful (so no attack on it/them/contributors) and I wouldn't normally bother...but i was there.

  11. Northern Soul Connections #29 - Murphys Law - The latest in this long running series of soul connected connections from Ken B aks @Kenb Murphy's Law: "Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong" Roscoe Murphy Jr was 34 years old when he ran Mel's Record shop at 2130 S. 7th, which as it happens was destroyed by faulty electrical wiring and eventual fire in Jan 1973. The record shop and apartments were owned by Paul, Sylvan & Stephen Gross. Well known around Philadelphia as rack jobbers & cut outs guys, trading as Serve-Rite Record & Tape Co, World of Music, Time Associates and others. Yhprum's Law: "Everything that can work, might work" - Yhprum is Murphy spelled in reverse. The 'Murphy's' put out some diverse material and left an interesting if muddled legacy. Let's start with a resume of what's on some of the labels..... Northern Soul Connection #29 ( click twice for best view) Site info - You can check out Kens other quality 28 Northern Connections all available via his 'activity' profile page, the link follows below... https://www.soul-source.co.uk/profile/37754-kenb/content/?type=cms_records5&change_section=1
  12. @BrewerytownBeats i think you just needed to let us know that earlier. people understand. It's the 'not knowing' that people hate. and yes i'm on the list.
  13. he was the first unsigned artist to play Live Lounge at Radio 1.
  14. anyone who writes about Northern Soul gets my vote...but what i'm not looking forward to is the rush (once the book has been received) of people telling me thay bought this that and the other from the lists for 2 woodbines and a brown-split with bitter.

  16. Vicki Baines Symbol Records, "sweeter than sweet things" label time =2:35. It is infact 2:46/7. Certainly not 12 seconds missing.
  17. dug these out from (file) Afro American, Oct 28 1967. sorry a bit untimely ( been away) she was quite something...
  18. reminded of this due to a recent auction item. To …Too
  19. congrats…25 years of anything takes some doing.
  20. I think I was agreeing … but now I’m not so sure
  21. Some releases were “ labelled “ as race records…and as we now all know they were targeted at what was a “race record chart” before it became an R&B chart. so maybe ‘pop’ as in Popular was an unlikely target
  22. Had quite a few contacts with Red. R.I.P
