  1. Russ is/has been 'trapped' in a past history he helped create. In the same way Alex Ferguson (as an example) is 'trapped' in his. That makes their relevance today really difficult. I guess the TV production crew sought Russ out for interview...not the other way around.
  2. @Backstreetniter Hi Jordan, another fine release and story following on from The New Loves/Gambrells story & Pioneer Studios. I guess you already know some, if not all of this (but in case); Gary started 2 labels, one of which was Empire intended for R&B and Pioneer for Rock and Roll (as your photo shows -Pioneer Exterior Shot - Notice Window; Empire Records / Pioneer Records). Gary anticipated releasing his first 8 records on/by Sept 1st 1966 ( he'd been in operation 5 months then). Not just 21 year old Gary Rubin but also Sherwood "Woody" Swartz and Alan Sussman. I once saw that The Detroit Vibrations (who became The Finest Our) recorded at Pioneer. By the way, i'm not convinced they morphed into Fridjid Pink as Discogs & JM have it. Anyhow i do believe Dan Mason was organist with The Detroit Vibrations but never found the others. Maybe you know?. Interestingly but perhaps coincidentally The Detroit Vibrations could often been found playing at The Empire Club, a gambling casino (which became Cal & Jerry's), Collinsville, East St. Louis.
  3. @Source Team is this (above) a system glitch re: highlighting text from a post and it then being attributable to the poster that quoted it.
  4. Is this really the case Russ? "I don’t want their songs to be widely known - I want to keep them to myself. I want to keep the songs and the artists/writers/arrangers in the dark so that only I know them. I want to keep your great song buried; I don’t want anybody else to know you made this; I want to keep you underground - just so I can show you off and play you as a trophy for me". Or is it, people(some) just want to hear them the way they were recorded?
  5. I’ve left all that stuff (like the Proms play list & it’s scene attachment) behind me for others to pick up on, and play in Benidorm . Don’t get me wrong, it’s not to be forgot. And I am protective of people taking the piss. But there has been / is…so much more exciting finds to be played/heard. I think what I’m saying is nostalgia is OK but it relies on original experiences. Did many of those who attended the proms or support it have those. Does that matter? Well no it doesn’t matter really if they stick to an appreciation of the music arranged in that way. But please don’t shoehorn it back into nostalgia of the way it was first heard.
  6. @Roburt Calvin Brooks- there is one entry for Cal Brooks in Joe Vaccarino's Baltimore Sounds 1. 1966, The Peakes a jaz/pop duo. Cal with Al McDonald. There is no picture in Joe's book...so here's one for you Benny Johnson has 3 entries in Joe Vaccarino's Baltimore Sounds 1. Benny Johnson & Soul Serenaders featured Gloria Brooks 2. 60's-70's-BennyJohnson quintet -1966 "Fresh Out of Tears" on Tarx & Today labels 3. 1980's Benny Johnson in a group, called In-Flight managed by Es Cade of Cade Productions
  7. @Phil The Fluter there is a thread from a few days ago you may have missed because its title was something like “have I missed a chance..” Signatures featured prominently
  8. Sometimes it’s hard to separate the vocal/ rendition from what the event represents. I have stumbled across The Signatures live performance and they didn’t seem that bad to me…BUT it’s the crowd that’s attracted to it that makes it cringe worthy i do vividly remember a “ tribute” group female lead singer once announcing that “this next song is from Wigan pier”.
  9. I have Joe Vaccerino’s Baltimore Sounds (Big book)… but not at home until 18th. When I am back I’ll check these out for you, and get back to you. They are more than likely in there.
  10. Hats off to the folks that post their mixcloud stuff on here. a bit of a life saver for me in summer when on holiday. no Judith chalmers stuff here…but suffice to say, during the summer holidays over the years when “she has been getting ready” (1-2 hours) the mixcloud posts have been top. played on my portable speaker…from hotel rooms and balconies. Sometimes “ neighbours” ask what’s that…sometimes neighbours ask me to turn it up. So…where and when do you listen to mix cloud posts on Soul Source.
  11. Yann did have a go at this one for me (1st pic) without luck...and i had a few (equally as 'dished') that i have had sat between a couple of record boxes for 4 years ( i guess) and now nearly flat. BUT...if you are DJ'ing with yours then i guess that is not a viable option.(unless you only gig once every 4 years )

Kollath, Submitted to the faculty of the University Graduate School in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in the Department of History, Indiana University June 2003 abridged for relevance WGEE-AM [WGEE-AM D.J. Paul Major [Rojam Records] and WTLC-FM both Indianapolis stations, had a policy of black programming. The 'Stomping Ground' of bands like James Bell, Highlighters, Presidents, Vanguards, etc. At WTLC, the D.J.'s were black, and the music was black, although when it opened in 1968 it was owned by both white and black men, unitl 1973 when it wholly owned by black men. The Ayr-Way department store at 2333 LafayetteRoad posted WTLC's weekly survey that listed the top soul records of the week. 13. Way Out's Jim Brown visited Radio Caroline in December 1966. He was trying to secure more money on the back of ''Please Baby Please'', by the Sensations.
it's an individual thing...but sometimes everything just seems brilliant. Last night was that for me. Just enough of a crowd, play-lists, etc.
  14. i have this on my wall. the only other one i know of ( different colour) belongs to Andrew @Lovemusic
  15. I’m such a lightweight and leave by 11.30, AND Chris seems to have had the twilight shift in the past 2 yrs and so I’ve missed his set. ( unlike the early days). Well tomorrow I’ll be in for 7.45 latest so don’t let me down.
  16. I'm guessing...but i think it might have something to do with provenance. In that, an invoice or sales receipt from JM as to the authenticity is a 'given' if the buyer sells on. Where as a lot of other (not all) sales sources aren't quite as 'indisputable' without taking a bit of time to check, investigate, etc. So lazy buyers.
  17. that will be interesting. thanks for the heads up. also the date is a poignant
  18. i only have a couple of photo's (real one's not digital) of my parents and late sister. I'd save those. Here's one, before i was born...guessing 1950/51. Not sure where it was taken, but i bet it's a day out/holiday.
  19. The latest Northern Connections episode, it's #33 in this long running series from Kenb Northern Soul Connections #33 - The lnvaders / E.Lampkins Figuring out the participants of, and then 'attaching' them to, Earth Record Co F/W 18740 A-B has been a tricky business! The result has mainly fallen to investigating a mash-up of USA geography, people time & place, and combining it with some intuitive wild ass guesswork. There was a number of differing Louisiana 'Invaders' (plus at least 15 "Invaders" bands on 45Cat.com) around at the time including a five member 9th graders rock group, aged 14 to 15 yrs old that i've rejected as candidates. Whether The Invaders individually named below came out of the Bethany Baptist Church Invaders is hard to say. So as much as it makes sense to me, the findings are inconclusive as to whether those written about (here) are the participants on 'Music Turn Me Loose /The Theme'. You decide... 21. not sure what you want to know? artist, 45, year, etc...BUT being that the label is Owings Mills, MD, the book Baltimore Sounds by Joe Vaccarino has Ernie Atkinson (keyboard/vocal) as a 1966-1969 group member of Stan & the Seoul Survivors (formerly 7 Dimensions).
  22. I never met Bobby. And i can accept both accounts of Bobby by the two posters (although i do admit the use of "screw" in the context it was used, isn't one i'd ever use) When i was researching Ella Woods/Miss Lady/Soultown etc, for the published soul source article back in Oct 2021 i did come across Bobby Sanders. One 1965 account has the 22yr old Bobby turning away one man and one 17yr old juvenile from his door, only for the two to return with a gun and force another resident to take them to Bobby's apartment. The two men took $200 from Bobby and shot him in both legs, causing compound fractures. Which were treated at the Central Receiving Hospital. The two men could have known that Bobby carried money and chanced their arm, in which case he was a 'true' victim OR the two men may have had a 'beef' with Bobby ( based on the fact they rerturned). Curiously i never found an account for the charges, any trials, or outcome? the Music (business) in the 60's and early 70's was a tough and sometimes dirty business. Stuff got done by people that probably wouldn't have got done in later life.
  23. Get on Up ( James brown story)
  24. Doh… I can be a bit thick, and a bit stupid, but not usually both together.
