  3. Great stuff Geoff, If you ever get chance to contribute to anything on the forums at modculture.com, I'm sure they'd love to hear your memories etc.
  4. and plays Sax version of 'call me' If music got better the more complicated and 'adult' it became, Prog rock and jazz fusion would be the pinnacles of musical achievement. Keep it simple so you can feel the groove and so the singer can express themselves. Over produced soul is the noodly jazz of gay song writers!
  5. I think mods would have been listening to soul before anyone else in this country, depends on where you date the birth of 'soul' I suppose. To me, the mod ethic is not about liking what 60s mods liked anyway (although it's a myth that mods liked the Who by the way), it's about liking quality music, which (arguably ) justifies them liking northern soul.
  6. lol Davie, that's what you call a shameless plug 'one-two'.
  7. We put on a mod do in Sheffield that so far has been a great success. I put my later set up on a mod site so might as well put it here to show what we play. I dont suppose I'm representative of the whole scene, but this is what I played and it went down well, played similar at Mousetrap too, so I guess it's fairly popular at the moment. Nothing revolutionary, but it was to a packed full dancefloor in the last hour. Earlier on, I played probably more deeper R&B maybe. (It's the Pow Wow club and the next one's 15th July by the way, at the DNR Live club Sheffield ...all mods, ex-mods & soulies & everyone welcome! ) Chantels - Indian Giver Kingsize Taylor - Somebody's always trying Troy Dodds - The real thing John Andrews - It's just love Curtis Lee - Is she in your town Bo Jr - Coffee Pot Lloyd & Glenn - mini skirts & go go boots thingy & thingy - thing and thing thing thingy Victoria Williams - Show some sign Benny Spellman - this is for you my love Tobi Lark - sweep it out in the shed Barbara Lynn - i dont want a playboy Johnathan Capri - gonna build a mountain Otis Lee - Hard Row to hoe Thingy Thingy - i can't go Cleveland Robinson - work song Oscar Brown Jr - Humdrum Blues Tony Middleton - Spanish Harlem Tito Puente - hit the bongo Billy Hawks - Oh Baby I believe I'm losing you Little Nicky Soul - I wanted to tell you Jasper Woods - hully gully papa Ernie Washington - Lonesome Shack Baby Huey - Monkey Man Mike Pedicin - Burnt toast and black coffee Joanne Campbell - I changed my mind jack Manny Corchado - Pow wow
  8. thanks. Excellent, that. Like the Little John, it's different but got some real energy & quality. They must have had a real talent at the label.
  9. as it's so impossible, anyone got a soundfile?
  10. It's OK, I'll pay 5.
  11. Anyone know what that Fads 'my poor heart' went for on Manship's auction? Meant to bid but forgot. And anyone got another? ta
  12. I'm gutted, just bid quater of a million on the Groovettes and still not the highest bidder! Now that's an in demander!
  13. 'Jo anne Campbell - I changed my mind jack'?
  14. I think it's different if you're a club resident like yourself - obviously you have to go with the mood / counter-balance a guest, fill emptied dancefloors etc. and therefore playlists would make no sense. I think for guest spots, people tend to know pretty much what they're gonna play because it'll be their most impressive stuff. You'd hope so anyway! I put playlists up for our new night cos no-one barely even knew we existed so it showed that we weren't just jokers with CDs or boots - and I think it worked in gaining us a bit of respect as a club worth making the effort for (if you're into that sort of stuff!). Once you're established I think there's less need for them though. They would definitrely influence my decision to go to a night though - there may be only a couple I know on the list - but if those two are my sort of thing I'll have more faith that the rest will be. I love loads of records played on the scene, but not being a 100% souly, I have to pick and chose do's quite carefully that play my kind of stuff, cos when they don't, I have to say it doesn't do a lot for me.
  15. probably not booted because of the value, but because of the rarity. There's far too many of the Mosquito's about for it to be an earlier, local issue anyway. Apparently it doesn't have the original b-side, which is quite a nice jazzy boogaloo track, and doesn't one side at least do a bit of funny editing with the intro? Shoddy record either way, steer clear.
  16. The Charmaines - I idolize you. Was discussing this last week. Proper release on Fraternity or just acetate?
  17. I like Bobby Lee Fears version of Pat Boone's 'exodus', Della Reese version of 'It was a very good year', Micky Denton 'nature boy', Carl Henry Hall 'Summertime', Grady Tate 'Moondance' & Caprells version of 'close your eyes' & ted taylor's slower version too. & of course Nina Simoner could sing more or less anything & make it soulful IMO.
  18. well get rid then sunshine, it's sounding well tired! Aye, the Pow Wow club in Sheffield was top. I was off my face, but I'm told it was a good night all round. Although the next one clashes with Prestatyn unfortunately so I wont be expecting any soulies but if anyone's interested, details of the next one and my playlists from the last one are here: https://www.modculture.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8929 going to owt up north any time James?
  19. James, why dont you sell me the 'Little John', that's sounding a bit over played now! you still got that btw?
  20. will someone please sell me that record!
  21. Cheers Mace, got one now anyway, mik
  22. Wanted: Delores Ealy - I've Been Looking (Velvet) Rollers - Troubles (Bel-star) John Andrews - It's Just Love (Parlaphone UK) will swap for wad of cash. recordmik@btinternet.com

How can you tell when it's a boot? thanks, Mik
  24. just a thought, but if people stopped buying bootlegs, people would stop making them. Who does buy them by the way, and why? Say Hamilton Movement was booted, can you not get it legit on CD? So why buy a bootleg 45?
  25. Ha ha I was going to say that one from Dr Truelove! 1 up to 92?? there's at least 45 odd years of that age range that leaves you looking seriously perverted! One of my favourites is 'For crying out loud' by Bunny Sigler. Apart from the line 'I used to be happy so ginger and snappy', which is quite remarkable in itself, the whole thing's a bit dodgy: He starts with the old 'I once was a clown...my cheers turned to tears...etc' and all the usual clown metaphors that you get to mean you were once happy and now you're broken hearted and lost your happy outlook, a la 'tears of clown'... but then when he gets to the line 'see that girl on the flying trapeze, hey hey hey, she used to belong to me', you start to think: 'hang on, this is no metaphor, this fucker actually was a clown, and his bird really was the trapeze artist!'. So it's either an extremely elaborate metaphor, or it's the best damn proffessional-clown related song ever.
