  1. Hi and thanks for looking (I'm not sure if I've posted this twice...I had difficulty with my Internet connection the first time I tried) I'm selling the following and hope that I've been realistic with the prices based on conditions. 2. PM's you Buddy. Chris
  3. It was the Parr Hall in Warrington for me in 1985. I'd just started a course at Liverpool University and up to that point my only experiences of Northern Soul had been limited to scooter rallies / scooter club 'do's' and from the early Kent albums. As Warrington is only a short (and relatively inexpensive - student funds were tight) train ride / bus ride from Liverpool it was an ideal venue for me and a couple of University pals (25 years later I'm still in very regular contact with my original 'nighter buddy Neil Brown). I went through the whole night without knowing a single record! Not a one. Chris

  5. I think it was originally covered up by Pat Brady as Lee Otis Valentine & The Lost Souls. I remember travelling all over the country as a young impressionable fledgling 'soulie' to hear Pat play this at ths start and end of his 'sets'. It took me 20 years to get a copy (from Neil Brown - thanks Buddy) on Bell (just about as Minty as you can get) and it's still my No.1 tune of all time as it brings back many, many happy memories. Sourced a copy on Southern Artists for Dave Truscott not long after getting mine and this now lives in France with Trevor Bridge. Still makes the hair stand up on the back of neck every time I hear it.
  6. Many thanks for the extra information Ian. I'm glad that my original post was reasonably accurate (though lacking in the fine detail). Chris
  7. Try John Manship. My mate (Dave Truscott) sold him a copy only a few days ago. It was in great shape when I originally sold it to Dave around 4 years ago and has hardly been played since. Chris
  8. I believe that a more recent 'find' was The Jokers, Soul Sound (Skofield). I understand that a very good mate of mine (Neil Brown) jointly found the first 2 copies of this with Stevie Z in the mid 90's in Val Shiveley's in Philly. If memory serves, Stevie kept his copy and Neil sold his to Ginger. Ian Cunliffe (I seem to recall being told) found the 3rd copy. 2 years after Neil and Stevie found the first copies Neil and I returned to Val's and found copy 4, misfiled under 'T' instead of 'S' (Val's is organised in label order). Bought it for $15 and took and offer from Terry Davis for £1,500 within a week of coming home (paid for the trip did that). Wish I'd kept it though as it was in tip top condition. Chris
  9. By way of conclusion.... A full refund has now been made to David (and the cheque is genuinely 'in the post'). I'd just like to say a massive 'Thank You' to David and to all of you who offered your messages of support (as I was understandably aprehensive about the reaction my post would generate, but a promise is a promise and I did say to David that I would publically acknowledge my error). I am genuinely humbled by your comments and kind words. Chris
  10. I wanted to know which record had cost him £200 and took him 7 months to "track down".
  11. Hi Folks, Many thanks to all of you for your comments / scans / observations regarding the recent enquiry by David Miller regarding the authenticity of the Royal Five record 'Say It To My Face'. Your input was essential in helping clear up a major c*ck-up on my part as I was the seller to whom he referred. I offer an unreserved aplogy to David for my error in selling him a boot when I had genuinely believed I was selling an original record. I had said to David that should this be proved to be a boot I would offer my apology via this site and that's exactly what I'm doing for all to see. A full refund is being made to David and the final email I sent him regarding this most embarrassing episode is posted below (this was sent yesterday @ 18.18). I have never erred in this way before and will canvass opinion / advice / guidance in future before selling anything if there is even the slightest doubt regarding authenticity as I am keen that no-one else has cause to be in any way disatisfied with any dealings with me. I sincerely hope that this genuine error has not in any way brought this site into disrepute and I can only hope that I will not be ostracised by SS and it's members for this mistake. Once again I offer an unreserved apology. Chris Hi David, Further to our respective emails on Friday / Saturday I have conducted further research into the appearance of the originals / boots (this has been helpfully supplemented by the SS thread). I was wrong. You were right. I had sold you what I firmly believed to be an original issue and it has indeed proved to be a boot. I was blissfully unaware of the deep purple (almost blue) original issue label and thought that rich purple colour of the label on the record I sent you was indeed the original. No deceit or misrepresentation was intended and I apologise unreservedly (not only for selling the record but for any embarrassment caused to you if you got 'pulled up' for playing a boot). As I had bought this as an original myself I feel even more of a fool (1. for selling it to you and 2. assuming I'd got a legit copy in the first place). Can you please remind me of your address and I will refund the £100 (plus postage of £5) immediately. I'll also add and other £2.50 to cover postage back to me. I intend to have this record framed as a reminder to check, check and check again before selling anything. I shall, as per my emails early on Saturday post a full apology to you on SS (would you like to see the proposed text before I submit to ensure that you are happy with the content?). Once again, please accept my unreserved apologies; the mistake was genuine but nonetheless it was a mistake on my part. I hope there are no hard feelings. Kind regards Chris
  12. No offence taken. I bought this through Soul Source only a couple of months ago (so that might explain 2 of the copies...it's the same copy twice). My inability to either say "No, I've spent too much already" or accept that my salary does not match my collecting aspirations has resulted in the reluctant sale of this record. Chris
  13. Hi Folks, Up for sale is an Ex+ copy of this ultra rare 45. Only minimal signs of play, sound quality is outstanding. Over committment on other records forces reluctant sale. £1,750 or closest offer (assuimg I believe it's reasonable) by Sunday night gets it. Please contact me via chris.penn@voweurope.com rather than a PM via Soul Source (I can't always log on to the site but can generally access emails). Cheques or cash preferred but will take PayPal if it's a deal-breaker and offers are in line with the asking price. Many thanks Chris

  16. Royal Five, hard issue for sale. EX cond. £100 (this includes Special Delivery). Need the money. Cheque or Paypal. If Paypal please 'gift' the money so I don't pay the fees (I am, after all offering to pay postage). chris.penn@voweurope.com Thanks for looking.
  17. Hi Folks, Many thanks for your comments. The styene copy I have does have the delta number and it appears to correspond with the date of release. The styrene copy looks like it's got a faint Monarch Records stamp in the run out groove. And yes Paul, it does play loudly enough (so may thanks for a belter of a replacement copy). Thanks for your assistance. Chris
  18. Hi, I hope I'm posting this in the correct section; if not please accept my apologies. I'm trying to find out if 'Love Runs Out' was booted. I've had a white demo for years and years. This is on styrene and it doesn't have 2 parallel lines running across the label horizontally. As this copy was well-worn I was on the hunt for a replacement. I was lucky enough to obtain a replacement recently. This replacement copy does have the 2 parallel lines and is on vinyl. Whilst I'm sure that this is a 'proper' version, I'm not so sure about my old styrene copy. Can anyone shed any light on the authenticity (or otherwise) of my well worn styrene demo? Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks Chris
  19. Hi Folks, Ever got carried away and bought some tunes thinking "the bank balance looks OK so I'll have that" Ever had the niggling feeling at the back of your mind that perhaps the bank balance looks a little too healthy, but you've not really looked too closely into the reasons why before spending your heard earned? Sounds familiar? Well I've dropped a right clanger. The extra money I thought I had was the money for a new carpet and the wife is gonna hit the roof when I tell her. If you don't like the thought of a kindred spirit getting stabbed in his sleep or having certain parts of his anatomy removed with something sharp then please take a look at the following. If you do buy any (prices reduced due to the severity of the kicking I'm about to get), you'll be able to take satisfaction not only in great sounds at a great price but that you've made a contribution to saving my bacon (desite the fact that I deserve little or no sympathy on this occasion). If you can't buy any to help me...then buy them for my wife. Don't let me deny her the carpet of her dreams! For those of you reading this who are thinking 'he is a man or a mouse? Just tell your wife'...then please feel free to pass me the cheese. This is an update from my posting last week. Prices have been revised and records of a similar value have been grouped together so that a special deal can be offered if you consider buying a 'bundle'. Payment cheque please (I can't buy the carpet she wants using paypal). For UK buyers Recorded Delivery is from £2 and Special Delivery is from £5. I'll come back to you with postage rates for any 'bundles' you take. Please contact me via chris.penn@voweurope.com rather than via pm through the site. I hope there's something of interest for you; many thanks for looking and for helping save my bacon. 23. Hi Folks, If you're interested I have a near mint demo of 'Keeps On Buring' by The Burning Bush on Mercury for sale for £200. If it's sent to a UK address I will include Royal Mail Special Delivery in the price. PayPal accepted at no extra charge (if that makes life easier). Condition is near mint; only the tiniest of blemishes precludes a Mint grade (along with 392 written in pencil on the flip side; this may well be capable of being erased as it's only light, but I didn't want to use a pencil eraser on it just to be on the safe side). Please email via chris.penn@voweurope.com if interested. Thank you for looking. Chris
  24. Hi Folks, This is a plea for help! For those of you who know John 'Biff' Griffiths (founder of the The Birchfield Soul Nights in Widnes), or have ever attended any of the nights held there, or have ever had 'hassle' from the management of the venues you've run (or DJ'd at or attended) can you please consider either begging John, pleading with John, bullying John (he's a big pussycat really despite his commanding presence) or cajoling John into not resigning as the co-promoter and DJ of one of the North West's longest running soul nights? John felt forced to resign after the last event in June. Why I hear you ask? The joint culprits were talc and bar staff with attitude! A couple of months ago someone slipped on talc on the dance floor and injured themselves. They sent a letter to the venue's management and, fair play to them, the tone was advisory in nature (warning of the potential for future personal injury claims) rather than threatening (the person concerned as a 'Soulie' didn't want to see the venue sued by the less scrupulous). So, after a warning from the management committee, all was well for a couple of months; we managed to persuade those who use talc not to do so for fear of the committee putting a stop to the event. However, at the June event we weren't quick enough; the talc came out and nearly as quickly did the bar staff (who were all over the dance floor like a pack of Rottweiler's). The lights were turned on and they barked their orders at John to turn the music off until the floor was mopped and had time to dry. They were not only rude to John but also rude to those 'Soulies' who politely questioned their actions. 15 minutes later we reconvened. John was extremely annoyed; the staff had been rude to our customers and had been totally disrespectful in the way they'd gone about demanding that the music was turned off. The net result was that John felt obliged to announce that he would be resigning as a DJ forthwith as there was no way he was going to have our guests treated this way and was not personally going to be spoken to in such an outrageous manner. Whilst Dave and I are both just as annoyed we think it's fitting that we continue to run The Birchfield (at least until the 10th Anniversary in November) in order to both thank our loyal supporters and regulars but also to recognise the massive contribution that John has made to the Northern Soul scene in Widnes. After much pressure from Dave and I, John has agreed to DJ at the 10th Anniversary event (after all it's John's 10th Anniversary, Dave and I have only been jointly running The Birchfield with John for just over 7 of the past 10 years). However, it's fair to say that The Birchfield just won't be the same without John and although he'll still be attending every month as a customer; both Dave and I aren't looking forward to the events nearly as much as we would have if John was with us. So, our plea to you (if you have a spare moment) is you send some words of encouragement to John. Anything that you can say or do to get him to reconsider and 'keep the faith' until at least the 10th Anniversary would be very, very welcome. We've not got much time though. The next event is this Friday 25th July. We've tried to give John as much time as possible to reconsider his decision, but as it stands he's still not budging! Perhaps you can help him change his mind? We've only got a few days to get him to change his mind so if you can help, if you can spare a few words of encouragement then please contact John via Soul Source (member name JohnGriff) or via griffiths_j@ntlworld.com Thanks for your time, thanks for your interest and thanks in anticipation for your support.
