A brief intro...
Got into soul about 76/77 through older lads on my estate and lads in my year at school who had muzzys and looked older and went to Wigan on a Wednesday night . Went to local discos as l was a skinny get and didn't look old enough or had the bottle or the money to go anywhere.l was made up to read in Blues and Soul that there was going to be an alldayer at Widnes Queens hall on bank holiday Monday sometime in 78 ,it was the nearest I would get to go to a real venue , l think they had 2 or 3 alldayers there.l heard a load of records there l obviously didn't know but the most exciting thing was hearing So is the sun and all the scene faces shuffling at the front of the stage. It blew my mind.I kept asking a DJ for your 'ready now ' which I was mad on at the time but he didnt have it and said he would for his next set, when he came back on later he forgot it so when I asked again he said heres the key for the record room ,told me where it was and where his box was .I went straight to it with only dancing to it on my mind and not the least bit interested in in a room full of all the other DJs records worth thousands of pounds. I got into the mod scene in late 79 not realising the link between mods ,suedeheads ,soulboys and 70s scooter boys which had splintered all over the place. The first big event I went to was a mod allnighter at the Queens hall again. This was where the link started for me as there were hundreds of scooters and the music was 100% Northern and no mod revival records but it was all over by 10 o clock as a mass Yorkshire versus Lancashire brawl broke out and the floor was covered in beer, blood and glass. It was like something out of the wild west.
I know KEVIN ROWLAND of DEXYS isnt a fan, in one book he states the he worked in Clubs in Birmingham and he hated the silly soulies in their silly high waisted trousers spinning around.
