  1. Always thought drill holes add provenance for me - you don't see many 'boots' with them. The only time I get annoyed is when they are in the run-out groove!! it then becomes an issue with the 'playing surface' rather than a cosmetic issue with the label so should be mentioned.
  2. Really sad news one of the few remaining Soul greats. R.I.P. Otis.
  3. Barbara Mason "He's got to love me" is 'take' of her released 'Ain't Got Nobody' - I've read that it may not be even a different take - I've not compared them myself so can't confirm one way or the other. Its a nice set - seen some negative criticism - of the packaging mainly, but you can't please everyone. Would love to see one for Ric Tic or a few other labels presented like this. As for playing them out - well if you enjoy them and you think the crowd you play to will - well play them!
  4. and another nicer copy....
  5. Dear me - Don Covay is one oversight for sure!! March 24, 1936 – January 31, 2015 R.I.P.
  6. Some great events this year for me - don't have a problem with promoting or Djing disqualifying me! Steve mentioned Gladys Knight -saw her at the Sage Gateshead.... Ann Sexton at the Wilton in November was superb.... Bilbao in October was as wonderful as ever - fantastic city and a great weekend - plus now live entertainment every year - Michael James Kirkland this year. but the highlight for me was .... The Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans - 2/3 Oct - held every two years - this year included Brenda Holloway, Betty Harris, Jimmy Jules, Tony Owens, Barbara Lynn, Irma Thomas, Mable John, Roy Head and Willie Hightower - don't think I'll ever see a line-up like that again!!
  7. You can have mine for that Steve!!! Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year!
  8. ah well maybe that should of been mentioned in the first place !! it does indeed become a little clearer.....
  9. I've said it before, but this is some elaborate scam. Someone has produced a beautiful looking - if not perfect - facsimile of a Tangerine 45 - they have picked a track that is a well known LP only play - and indeed a pretty good seller because despite its demand you can still pick it it up for less than a tenner. The track itself is musically OK I guess. They have pressed it up - but then not put it on sale - they have however, chose to somehow 'plant' a battered copy in a job lot which has been seen by one of the scenes most respected figures and a second copy in a collection of a person 'returning' to the scene who happens to be a mate of another of the scenes respected collectors. And to cap it all lives in the same town as the scenes biggest collector - who was able to view it! I'm completely puzzled by what the purpose of all this is? It's a funny way to make money for sure ! will they sell anymore due to the elaborate steps they have taken - wouldn't it of been easier to knock it out for tenner through the usual channels? Wouldn't it of been better to pick a tune someone was actually interested in? come on, someone must know?
  10. Not normally Bob - but if the seal was not broken suspect the problem must be with the manufacturer rather than Amazon. Can't fault Amazon's customer service normally so I'm sure they'll sort it. Quite fancy the box set myself so keep us posted.
  11. I think the Sam Moore on Atlantic is a good example of that - heralded as a 'lost' album track on CD release and on 45 too, then 10 or more years later turns up. Not many about - Ian levine insisting his was the only copy - but we know there was at least two different pressings in in different parts of the US . Someone did a good job keeping those under wraps.
  12. oh and Barbara Mason - fantastic in Spain last year!
  13. The (Soul) Queen of New Orleans herself - Irma Thomas, Barbara Lynn, and Patti Labelle. Even Betty Harris is still going strong. Ann Sexton was fantastic at Wilton. I think the ladies have fared far better than the men.
  14. He also cut some fantastic sides with Jerry Williams/Swamp Dogg in the 70's on Capricorn....
  15. Regardless of whether the copy that has been scanned and featured here, Docfish (is that Lars ?) has said on this thread and the previous one that he has seen a copy 'in the flesh' and even described the condition. It seems quite an elaborate scam to produce a 'perfect' copy that turns up here then 'plant' a battered copy in a job lot from the States. But why bother ? as others have pointed out its been played out of the album for years - its not like it is a previously unreleased unknown track is it?
  16. I'm sure you would Steve!!!
  17. They're nice to have!
  18. Nice write-up, thanks for sharing. It was a fantastic performance.
  19. Very sad news - always loved the Impressions but I had no idea until recent years that the Brooks Brothers were also Bits n' Pieces of 'Keep On Running Away' fame..........R.I.P.
  20. and an even greater pity she is dead!
  21. I'm a bit confused by this topic - so you mean artists who gained wider fame than just the Soul/R&B world i.e. crossed over to the Pop market - and you are judging their greatness by their wider commercial success? Also interesting the first four you list - Sam has been dead over 50 years (before Soul really got started), Otis 48 years and Marvin and Jackie over 30 years - they have all been a long time gone!! Very recently I have seen Willie Hightower in New Orleans and he was fantastic and on Saturday night Ann Sexton at the Wilton - I would be hard pushed to name a singer I have heard live sound so much like their records. Don't worry about their stage antics Roses and the like - get out and support them whilst you still can !
  22. Thanks Robb - that's confirmation enough for me - I'll stop looking!
  23. Hi Mal - I have both of these 45's too. Can only assume that the second one was quickly withdrawn because 433 - the next release - also had 'A Piece Of Gold' on the flip. Although the A side of 433 was the previously released 'Honey Child' (Duke 375 from '64). It does mean Bobby had FIVE releases in '68 - he usually had three or four per year but by '68 I don't think Duke knew what to do with him - his personal life and career were quickly going down the pan! There is another Duke release with two different b sides- Duke 160 -'I Learned My Lesson' - one with 'Lead Us On' the other with 'I Don't Believe' both from 1956. I have the second one 'I Don't Believe' - need the 'Lead Us On' variation badly! Out of interest can you confirm that 336 was actually released? 'Don't Cry No More' b/w 'Hoew Does A Cheating Woman Feel' - I have once seen it listed as unreleased and 'Don't Cry No More' came out later in '61 with St James Infirmary' on the flip. So along with 160 and 336 I also need 369, 105 and 115 to complete my BB Duke collection!!!
  24. I agree - people always seem to dismiss this possibility - despite that the fact there are many many examples of different pressings, different mixes , different label designs , different b sides of otherwise 'identical' releases.
