  1. One of my all time favourites - another great Mecca last hour spin Mike 07_You_re_Messin__Up_A_Good_Thing.mp3
  2. As you can see from the attached Decca promo photo, she has a very fine voice indeed....
  3. 'Nolan' inc 'Keep On Keeping On' ; 'Oh Baby' & 'If Only I Could Be Sure' Mike
  4. It is of course the flip of Hypnotized - a must have in its own right - on the US and UK releases but of course you need the french 45 - which has the even better album only track (elsewhere in the world!) - 'You Can't Take It' Mike
  5. Absolutely agree Tony - never thought I would hear the like - does not matter what the quality was like - it had to ocme out! Pity there has never been any other stuff unearthed - only aware of another Atco track, but never heard it Mike
  6. but that would of stayed in the can if it was not for that dodgy CD Sequel put out produced by Giovanni Scatola and some other bloke........ Mike
  7. if the criteria is - 'because of the depth of their "repetoire" is:' its got to be Aretha and she has never been unlike most of those nominated Mike
  8. I too was recently reading an old Mojo that contained Tony Rounce's excellent tribute to Dave .. and of course only ten days later John Peel passed Mike
  9. I was aware it was played at the Mecca - perhaps that's why I liked it I was merely suggesting out that there was not the 'critical mass'' to warrant several lots of bootlegs and perhaps it was Deke producing several versions/small pressing runs to satisfy the demand. Mike
  10. I think you might have something there, so far we have had - Purple & White demo Purple & silver demo Purple & white issue Purple & silver issue Red & white demo/issue ? alternative spoken intro demo/issue ? Christ it was not that popular - think I only heard it once at Wigan Suspect the label owner was responsible for most of them - he was well aware of the Northern scene and did speak to Levine before it ever came out - can't believe he did not meet the demand himself and that it was worthwhile for bootleggers to make that many different pressings Incidently - I'm not that familiar with the spoken intro version - but it is real nice mix, very prominent horns and background vocals missing from the original - has quite a contempory sound like a a Mark Ronson re-mix Still like the original intro best though! Mike
  11. Rupert I think it just looks white on the scan - it is silver, everything is exactly as per my purple and silver copy not a character out of place. I think it was a genuine copy. Good luck finding one Mike
  12. There has been much discussion about this on here - different intros, different colours - but I can state categorically the person who was responsible for the copy you bid on was the label owner - Deke Deberry. It is identical to my copy which came direct from him - a friend of mine Mike Charlton spoke to him personnaly (Ian Levine posted his contact details in his old Black Music column) and obtained five copies plus one of 'Tow Away Zone' (which I got too !!). So that makes it a real record to me - and a fantastic one to boot Mike
  13. This arrived in the post a month or so ago - bent double by the postie - was there ever a more appropriate title? Anyone do me a cheap replacement? Mike
  14. Just checking - it was actually 1999 - July 17th - amongst others the songs performed included - 'Wear It On your Face' 'A Heart is A House For Love' 'Always Together' (awesome this one) 'Run for cover' 'Give My Baby A Standing Ovation' 'Oh what a Night' 'There Is' 'Stay In My Corner' A fantastic memory that could never be re-created - not 8 years on. I certainly would not want to see them in a concert format - Soul artists are just not suited to that - you always end up short changed. Went to see Al Green at Manchester with Candi Staton earlier this year and was back on the street at 10:20 wondering what to do - was back in Middlesbrough before 12!! Best part of 40 quid too Regarding the night - was I imagining things or did Dean Courtney turn up and sing 'I'll Always Need You ' unaccompanied ? Mike
  15. And responsible for much of the Willie Tee stuff - who sadly passed last week. Coincidently, only last night I downloaded his album - 'Wardell Quezerque: Don't Be No Square, Get Hip to Quezerque' - from itunes - includes some great stuff inc Willie Tee, Denise Keeble, Irma Thomas and the wonderful Donald Lee Richardson Mike
  16. Has anybody mentioioned Jaibi on Kapp? the Northern 'What Good Am I' backed by the sublime Deep soul of 'You Got Me' -one of the finest tracks ever! and staying with Larry Banks ... Kenny Carter - 'Got to get myself together' b/w 'Showdown' both championed by the late Dave Godin of course Mike
  17. I have a spare copy of the CD 'The Birmingham Sound - The Soul Of Neal Hemphill vol 1' on Rabbit Factory which contains this track for sale - PM me if anybody is interested Mike
  18. You'll have bought a turkey which ever version it is !!! Mike
  19. I have a spare of "Here Stands The Man Who Needs You", if anyone interested PM me Mike
  20. Sorry Mark - I was asking the question 'was it bought for the deep flip' - and I meant the Paul Walters !!! Safe to say I will not be playing eitehr side of either record - both a bit rich for me Mike
  21. Bought for the Deep flip side? Mike
  22. Ana It came out on Mercury (MF 976) in the UK in 1966 - which probably helps date it Mike
  23. Fantastic news Sean - wonderful album - I would of included 'Showdown' and I'm not the One ' for completeness though - along with Jaibi two of the greatest soul 45's ever! Mike
