  1. Could it be that because the track was not previously issued it is not an issue releasing it now? I'm thinking of all those Stax collections that get round Atlantic's theft of the original masters/rights by including a previously unreleased take from the Stax vaults - I'm thinking of Otis in particular. Just a thought. I would love a definitive CD release of the Ric Tic stuff.
  2. Dave - you are persistent if nothing else!!! and I'm inclined to agree with you. There is a lot of bollocks talked about first/second issues, second pressings etc with none of it based on facts.
  3. is one slower than the other? can hear a different mix but played them simultaneously and seemed the same tempo to me. Also, were both versions actually released ?- the clips compare demo with issue. And if both released how can I tell?
  4. What do you need them for?
  5. you need to look very carefully on the run-out - it has a very barely discernible 'Archer' (?) marking on the original ........ see this discussion (about Eddie Parker) but it illustrates the marking. I literally need a magnifying glass to see it on my Johnny Bragg - it also has a pic cover
  6. Mine was a individually priced 'front page' item. Levine would often review them - then Soul bowl list them - this, Coetez Greer. L J Reynolds 'Cookin' spring to mind...
  7. Are you sure it has made it clearer for you? As far as I understand it - you could well sell your multi coloured version and buy back the exact same mix/cut on red and white! Gareth stated.....' There is one mix on the magenta/yellow logo: 104A. I don't think there is any sonic difference between the 104A copies on either red/white or magenta/yellow. ' And you know the multi coloured version does not sound that bad. I have had mine since Ian Levine played it and wrote about it in his Black Music column of the day. Any demand for it - and it was not great - was met a the time by Soul Bowl and it was the multi coloured version they were selling. Incidentally at the time I only recall hearing it at Wigan once and it was the instrumental 'Waiting' that was played.
  8. I thought Gareth said it was not the label design that indicated the 'better' mix/take rather than the title? the good mix/take is on BOTH designs - and that the 'inferior' mix/take is on Red and white only?
  9. Why do I seem to see more copies of the 'rarer' Red & White issue than the multi coloured version?
  10. Some interesting and fair points.... Music is an aural experience and is recorded in a studio in order to provide aural entertainment to the listener. It was not conceived to produce a piece of plastic or to look good (a car is - it provides a practical purpose but people enjoy the styling too). At various times the music performance could also be delivered by Radio, 8 Track, cassette,CD or today, via download - you don't even see them when they are reproducing the sound for your enjoyment. The purpose of the process is to deliver a musical performance, it is irrelevant what the delivery medium is. Yes, I do like the look of the odd label but I would never buy a record because it 'looked good' , likewise, I would never buy a record if it did not reproduce the sound in an enjoyable way or as the musicians intended.
  11. But a rare record - no matter how many copies there are - is only a 'print' of the musical performance laid down in the studios. The 'original' piece of art is on the tape from which masters, stampers are created to produce the 'copies' ie the records.
  12. Official yes - in the box set - but not as a new release i.e. when it was recorded

  18. Dare I say it is a retrograde step doing this type of thing on vinyl ? - I have got use to the many fantastic CD box sets that have been able to include anything and everything. Eight tracks a side was always pushing it on vinyl and it was the real downside to those early Loma albums - the Linda Jones LP been on one single side! Buy the originals on vinyl - remaster, document and re-issue on CD if you ask me.
  19. Great album, great series.....they probably wouldn't go with that cover these days...
  20. A Christmas present from my wife back on release - classic Soul, fantastic packaging - a lovely thing. A few on ebay now - as low as $65.......
  21. A good example of how 'Crossover' manifests itself for me from the period identified late 60's early 70's.....the A side is 'Crossover' to my ears b/w with a traditional storming stomper......
  22. There was 60's soul and 70's soul - they generally sound different - Crossover was the overlap between the two - not 'on the fours' but not 'Funky'.... probably made by artists/producers still making traditional Soul when all around was changing - Civil rights and all. Motown was the sound of the 60's ......Philly Int - the 70's ..it was somewhere in between - but Bettye Swann ' Kiss My Love...'? - pure 70's Philly. Stevens & Foster? it was a 1977 release ... it even has hints of Dr Buzzard .. it was on the cusp of Soul and Disco.....
  23. Always thought the artists who joined Motown who had had a career prior to Motown did not fare as well as those moulded by Gordy - and often went on to greater things after leaving ...The Spinners as you say, Gladys Knight and the Isley Brothers for sure and maybe to some extent Jnr Walker
  24. was his 'Don't You Know I Love You' on Contempo UK only? Same backing track as Jackie Wilson's version on his Beautiful Day LP I believe.
  25. His 70's remake of 'Sweeter' on WB is also very nice too..
