  1. But hardly original, it was an old music hall act who used it first - H Vernon Watson - taken from a partially opened backstage door! I think hindsight is a wonderful thing but it seems to me people take the music far more seriously now than they ever did then - it was just another record that came and went - was hyped a bit by the record company - and was no big deal. As many have pointed out it was a young persons scene with all sorts of mad and insane records being played and lapped up it was just part of that! Mike
  2. i'm lost here ! I thought that's how auctions worked - two or more bidders bidding against each other?
  3. One of those artists that reminds you this music is not about bits of plastic and all the nonsense that surrounds it. A truly great talent. Been playing his last CD from last year lately and it really is a great effort all things considered , give it go if you have not already. Mike
  4. Many have tried Hope you get sorted - if you don't get yourself down to Just Soul !
  5. Have you tried Jack?
  6. Not played mine for a long time but are you saying all UK copies don't play ' 'I'll Be Your Fool' ? could of sworn it did
  7. I always thought it was the same group ft McFadden and Whitehead ?
  8. Sold mine for £100 about 18 months ago. Never did anything for me. Think I bought it as a 'front page' recommendation from Soul Bowl circa '76 - must of been 85p - £1 back then. Mike
  9. ..or a 14 ragarse from Middlesbrough along with 'This Is Blues' !, Mike
  10. a Frank Wilson issue would put the mockers on it....cos you all hate it
  11. Can confirm this - Jack even got one of the Wigan dj's to play it covered up as the Checkerboard Squares or some such nonsense - as everyone knows Jack was a master scam merchant (as one of the scenes biggest promoters will confirm ). I went straight down to Alan Fearnleys and got a copy in case ! still have it.
  12. Yes caught the session driving up from Heathrow - don't normally listen to Wogan - she sounded very good indeed, said to my wife 'a touch of the Aretha'' in her voice - the stripped down band and production sounded really great - if the album is like that I'll get a copy for sure
  13. Good review in the Daily Express on Friday along with the other Ace offering 'Black America Sings Lennon & Mccartney' which includes the often overlooked version of Yesterday by Linda Jones (not on the Loma album). Well done Ace! Mike
  14. Slightly of topic, but I'm always amused by the story behind the Verves use of a 'sample' in 'Bitter Sweet Symphony'. Following legal action by the ABKCO (Allen Klein's company)the writing credit for 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' was credited 100% to KeithRichards and Mick Jagger after charges by the original copyright owners that the song was plagiarized from the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of the 'TheRolling Stones' 1965 song 'The Last Time'. That would be the same song 'based' on a traditional gospel songcalled "This May Be The Last Time", recorded by The Staple Singers in1955! Now you may think fair enough, but 'The Last Time' remains credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, mind Richards has been kindenough/big enough to 'mention' that it was based on the Staples song! The mind boggles!!
  15. Back in 75/76 I wrote to Hi Records and got back a nice package back together with this letter from Ginger Russell. Really nice of them and who would of thought 35 years later and I'm still listening to them . Mike
  16. When it was first mentioned I quickly got my tickets for Monday night at the Jazz Cafe, booked the train and hotel and sat back and looked forward to it. Now all of a sudden it is - 'this is Bobby's first appearance for quite some time we are proud to bring him to the UKs number one soul night' - he's doing FOUR nights at the Jazz Cafe first!!, - he was ''crap' last time!, - it clashes with something else!, - he's not doing enough dates! I was so looking forward to it
  17. Depends how fast you dance and which venue you are at Four cracking pieces of Soul music whichever way you look at it!
  18. Mine is a re-issue but can't compare to the original which I let go many years ago for 15 quid :o( It's a pretty good repro , gatefold sleeve and all even mentions it being available on 8 track!! No barcodes or anything, but to look at it is obviously too new......
  19. Bit mean......after all it is mint and he's knocked a ton off it - he could of got £300 12 years ago.
  20. Agreed - fantastic B&W photos in the Dusty album - add to that an amazing selection of tracks and covers - don't make 'em like that anymore!
  21. Sounds like a great night and what a fantastic playlist Alan. some of my favourites there - Persuaders, Linda, Dee Dee, George Jackson, Water & Power and Chuck Stephens - love to hear that lot played out!. Mike
  22. don't think it is very scarce - think I paid $5 - $10 - 'I'm Grateful' is nice - hits a great note at the end if I remember rightly
  23. Maybe those who used her name to 'cover up' their exclusives - when she was still actively performing - can chip in !
