  1. I registered , got the spreadsheet sent and watched it unfold on-line. Quickly realized that each lot was taking a minute so it was going to be nearly 5 o'clock before it started. They even paused the auction at that point! must of frustrated a few up there. So glad I didn't travel up.
  2. £1700 ( +20+%) highest bid on one lot - 200 or so 45's
  3. Yep, they didn't have a clue did they ? LOL
  4. Fantastic track - played it out in Memphis this year!! From the Boy Meets Girl album - lots like it on the album....
  5. Again on Atco/Atlantic and recorded at American Studios in Memphis
  6. Was this not on Atlantic and recorded in Muscle Shoals?
  7. Excellent observations. I remember reading a Dave Godin article when he talked about this Latin - Tijuana/Mariarchi if you like - theme running through Northern Soul tracks. Sure he quoted Freddie Chavez 'They'll Never Know Why' as being another.
  8. indeed it does....Otis Redding will of been dead fifty years next year, his music crops up all over the place without the help of any 'scene'. I'm sure all the great Soul music has been captured for posterity in a way much of the great historic Blues and Jazz was not. It will be around for future generations of music lovers to enjoy for years to come.
  9. Great set Steve - as were all of them...sorry we had to leave towards the end of your set but we could hear Carl Hall as we walked off down the street. Well done Kev, Pete and Gaz - great venue great concept, will do the full day next time .....
  10. It always struck me as an unfinished song and performed like a demo with the intention of writing a suitable chorus but they forgot to do so, probably that's why they binned it. I don't think it would of set the world on fire in the US if it had been released at the time.
  11. that was my recollection......but history continues to be rewritten when it comes to Ian....
  12. Was it really played at Wigan and Cleethorpes before Levine at the Mecca?
  13. Levine surely?
  14. Mark - that line-up is fantastic - it makes Glastonbury look even more lame! Miles, Jimi, Joni, Sly, Who, Doors,!!!!!
  15. I'm not sure what you are saying really.......and i'll write you off if you like but I don't really see the point in you writing these extended articles about something you don't like, why not focus on something you do?
  16. so when Norman Putman, Jerry Carrigan, David Briggs, Earl Montgomery, Donnie Fritts et al left Rick Hall at Muscle Shoals and re-located to Nashville they started to play 'bad' instruments in the 'wrong' way ??
  17. Is it metaphorically speaking? I though it was a homage to the power of music including those two Jazz greats ?
  18. 'Towaway Zone' Diane Jenkins - Creative funk
  19. Country music and Southern Soul are inextricable.
  20. also I mentioned this last time we discussed this.... when cataloging in a database I always use the convention 'Impressions (The)' and I would store that in the Surname field. But what do people do with someone like 'Little Milton' nickname followed by forename? Or Mel And Tim - two forenames? Again, I store that as surname so when I file by label then surname my STAX records would be in this order - Frederick Knight Little Milton Mel And Tim Newcomers (The) I do not differentiate between UK & US the previous thread...
  21. Dave If you start a spreadsheet - or any database - be sure to keep Forename and Surname separate. You need to be able to sort on Surname. Nothing worse than a listing sorted by forename!
  22. the problem with separating UK from US is that you can't keep artists together - Sam Dees on Atlantic for example - bought 'Fragile' as a new release on UK why would I separate it from the rest of his (all US) ? Likewise the Soul Bros 6 - Thank You Baby - have a UK release bought new - the rest US? So I file by label - ignore Country of origin then Artist then by title the exception to this is when I have a 'run' of a particular artist - which I file chronologically within Label and Artist (rather than title) - e.g. Wilson Picket on Atlantic (33 releases), Bobby Bland on Duke (58 releases) , OV Wright on Backbeat, Little Milton on Checker etc etc
  23. The Basic Black & Pearl - Wam, Polydor and UK Bus Stop - stuff is Canadian..... .
  24. Are you sure Sean ? - the CD claims an April 68 Chicago session. And to be honest it does not particularly jump out as 'Muscle Shoals'..
  25. It is of course 'You Can't Take It' ......
