  1. Henry Gray.......he played the upstairs room of The Central pub on Corporation Rd in Middlesbrough in the 80's.......
  2. The Impressions were fantastic in the Union Chapel last year Steve. A great venue.
  3. One of Soul Music's greatest and legendary songwriters sat at the piano performing and talking about Soul Music's greatest and legendary songs....what a total waste of time ! Why would you support such a thing ?
  4. well it wasn't 'flipped' as such...it was not a contemporaneous release with the US, it was released six or so years later because of the Northern Soul scene demand. Although it was the first time released in the UK it is no different than say Pye Disco Demands, Right on or Route releases......
  5. I have no opinion on the record itself.
  6. Don't think that will happen...it will mean giving a certain person some credit.......seems he is air brushed out of the TSWONS these days...
  7. that list is like comparing Apples and Oranges......... Sly and The Family Stone and the Supremes ? Booker T & The Mgs and Jackson 5 ? ridiculous!
  8. Big red label saying 'Customs Fee To Pay' - the itemised bill says 'Import Duty = 0.00' Excise Duty = 0.00' - you should of just paid those John.....
  9. It was never thought to exist until this year, it has been discuussed a few times on here. A few copies have 'surfaced' only this year- an LA dealer has sold a couple for $200 plus. I have seen maybe half a dozen for sale this year and never ever before, so that is kind of rare for a record over 50 years old.
  10. But the Post Office are not storing the record on behalf of HMRC - they are storing it for the buyer who may choose to leave it three weeks before settling his bill and collecting it. Basically when you buy a record from the US you know that if it is over a certain value (inc postage) you may possibly incur custom fees and VAT and that the PO will charge you collecting these fees and looking after your package in the meantime. It's simple really if you don't like it, don't buy from the US.......
  11. You are also asking him to make a false declaration on an official government form - they might not be inclined to do that. The way I look at it you should factor in all the possible costs when making your bid or purchase - if the seller does put a low valuation on the package consider it a bonus. Also why would expect a private profit making company - be it the Post Office or courier - to contact you and collect the charges plus store the item for up to three weeks on behalf of the government free of charge?
  12. Mal - re your original question - the explanation from Cashbox, the sequence of release must be as follows - Duke 432 Driftin' Blues A Piece Of Gold Duke 432 Driftin' Blues If You Could Read My Mind Duke 433 A Piece Of Gold Honey Child
  13. Are you local to Norton/Stockton Mark? I live near the old club now - its now a christian Meeting place. Always had all the visiting US soul acts for a weeks residency along with its sister club in Sheffield. Saw the Four Tops and Three Degrees there among others. I didn't go but they had Dionne Warwick there for a one night - I knew the promotions manager at the the time and I believe it cost £19k to put her on! I guess these days she would play the like of the Albert Hall. Roy Orbison recorded a live album there in the early 80's.
  14. I know my reply was pretty much much ignored - but how do we know the white and purple are boots - rather than just another pressing run ?
  15. Don't ever remember hearing the 'spoken intro' version back in the day and I loved the record. It was maybe only 10 years ago that I heard it for the first time - I bought a copy off here of one of the well known dealers for £80. Ian Levine championed the record in the first place - he was a big fan of the label and mentioned it often in his BM column at the time. He even printed Deke Deberry's contact info and that's where we got our copies from . Mike Charlton spoke to him on the phone and ordered six copies. The version was well known version and they were 'promo' copies. He was only able to supply five copies so he put in a copy of Tow Away Zone in to make up the order - and that was a real bonus as it was a big want of mine at the time! Just for clarity...... Are the normal issue promo only - does anyone have an issue? Are there promo copies of the spoken issue ? - mine is an issue Are people sure that it was booted - one is mentioned here and there is also a a white on purple copy (which I have). Is it another case of just different pressing runs ordered by the owner to meet demand locally in the US?

  22. Dan Penn would complain about Rick Hall and his banjo - maybe its him?
  23. Not my favourite version of the song but probably the most prominent banjo I have ever heard on a Soul record.....
  24. Great listing both of them John. Seem to remember your revised list in ITB 'shifted' a little more towards Southern Soul, which of course is no bad thing. Still need to get you book - any idea when pt 2 will be out? Mike
  25. Don't think the four Neptune sides have ever been on CD and neither has the Linda Lane track 'Lonely Teardrops' - wish they had included the other side mind.
