    Gene Redd was sacked while on the phone in Joanne Bratton's office. Al Kent mentions it in his book. Page 383. Anyone else got this book? I really enjoyed it but it came out after I stopped going to Detroit.

    You don't like Mr Big Shot one bit? Written by Keni Lewis/Carl Kidd, arranged by Sonny Sanders, Produced by Carl Davis and a Bunky Shepard Pick. Not to mention sung by GC and released by Constellation Records. As you say, strangely enough, top class pedigrees so don’t worry about upsetting others as there is not a chance in a million of your opinion upsetting most people!

    He was a great singer. Sadly he killed himself close to the Motown studio at West Grand Blvd and 14th street. He was only 34 years of age.

    The end of one of music's great groups. I met Abdul twenty years ago when he visited Glasgow with Fred Bridges who was the latter day manager of the Four Tops. Abdul was a gentleman. RIP. Here is the group performing on the back lawn of the Roostertail in 1966.

    Ralph was a member of the Sunliners (not the Manhattans) along with his brother Russ and Pete Rivera (aka Hoorelbeke) plus Gil Bridges and two others. Bridges and Rivera joined Rare Earth. Ralph Terrana created Tera Shirma along with Al Sherman. At the time of writing about these labels nothing much was known about them.

    One of the “Golden World Manhattans” came along to an event that we held in Detroit circa 2003/4. He was caucasian as were the rest of his group. He was dressed in one of those “all in one” denim outfits that I recall Dan Penn used to wear. To my eternal regret I never got his name but he was a member of the SoulfulDetroit forum.

    Clee - your last para sums it up. I was 18 years old in 1969 and just got into Soul the previous year. Used to go to Locarno in Glasgow where “Gimme” was played incessantly by the in house band due to radio popularity. Being a teenage Soul extremist meant that Brenton got dumped until only a few years ago when I saw that cd on YouTube. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks to everyone for seventies tips which I will play this weekend.

    I was looking at that Bell Sound studio on a map a few months ago. It was right behind another building of note. Escapes me right now. Eventually facility moved to W54th Street. Gil Askey another recording genius. Much appreciated David

    Thanks Alan. The sound on this recording is absolutely pristine and so New York. If you don’t have studio detail it should be easy to find out now. Wiltshire and Jacobs were top of their game.
