Jules, I understand your feelings on this......but for me it was the change of drug that did it.....speed to mdma......both used to fit the nights and make them superb.

I did allnighters including the casino from the late 70's through to the late 80's, and combined them with 6/8 month periods hitting the Goa beach parties which turned into full blown raves. Although I am a total N/S lover, my memories of the big parties in Goa are sure comparable.

New Book - 1975 - A Year In The Life Of Northern Soul
Ratt commented on Agentsmith's article in News Archives
Yea, 1975 my first year. And I was consumed/blown away by the amphet and the scene. And right from the start I could never get to grips with friends and acquaintances who bent my ear on a protracted verbal about how the times were actually in decline.......thought how the fck can this be on the way down. But over the years I think I have understood their comments more and more. Of course the casino is the prime example, because within just two or three years many of the original fans had given up on the place completely. I stuck with it till the final death, but if I am honest, I would say that I wish I hadn't gone to the last two nights. -
For me at least, I miss the dance moves of a lot of the girls at Wigan in that 70's time. That foot shuffle/slip thing, how to describe it? But sure as eggs is eggs, I don't see girls doing anything like it anymore. To me they do pretty much the same as the blokes do, move wise. I also seem to remember it was particular for the Casino, and the last time I saw it was from a little group of gals who had travelled down to the Wellingborough weekender quite a few years ago. Anyway, just wanted to put this out there......I don't like to think I will never see the likes of it again......beautiful it was.

Eddie Parker, But If You Must Go on Manships
Ratt replied to Soulgalore's topic in All About the SOUL
I listened to it for the first time and it almost sent me to sleep. So a vinyl diazepam. Do they go for a lot of money. -
It used to get the girls racing to the floor. Long weighted skirts doing what they do. Good memories, oh yea.

I never felt the 'love' when walking into M's like I did being in the big room. This would have been onwards from 75/76, and i have heard plenty of people say just about the same......like ice pick eyes turning towards the door as you entered. Must have been great for those in the click. I always needed a cup of orange squash and a bowl of jelly to calm my overdriven heartbeat after the couple of times I ventured inside.

Going back in time, I always think about how many tracks played seemed to me to be about as 'soulful' as a fatal car accident. They had a danceable rhythm, fast etc, but finito, no soul as such. Of course it was mostly white artistes, maybe all.....like that Johnny Vannelli. Always got wound up at that one....along with others. So played on the northern scene, but sure not northern soul.

The Yank....at least it's not buried in the mists of time, not here in the UK anyway. I wonder if Jamo had any say in which version went out for release.
-
I hope you go through life making errors this good Ady, riding on the back of Chess' original one or not. I find it odd that the fast one was not the first issue, it's completely blows the slow one away.
-
If it was played at venues when all is back to normal, i wonder how the dance floor would react. After all, that is the true test isn't it. And maybe the track is legitimate enough for this to happen?

Yes Sebastian, I understand about it now. burt weedon must have got sidetracked from the original question. It threw me a bit when I read his post...and there lies the problem, when you want information, it comes around that you listen to everything. Thanks to you and Scootboy also. It's been interesting for me.
-
Hiya burt, so can you lay a claim to the existence of the faster version.....it's very interesting for me....just love the motherf....r
-
Great information Sebastian. At least the fast version finally made it's way into the world.
-
That's interesting Joesoap, this link on YouTube, shows it on vinyl from 1971, and it's the fast version. This is the first time, and I've looked before over the years, that the fast version comes up at all on the tube. For me it's a nice tune anyway, all I read about it before seemed to sway towards the slow one that was released.

Thanks marty57, it pleases me that it might have a more authentic pedigree. 3 cheers to Kent, if it was them who dug it up.
-
I'm hoping someone can shed light on the history of that faster version of Jamo Thomas...Must I Holler. Is it one of those DJ remixes that did the rounds a few years back. I'm only asking because I sort of love the track, not particularly in a 'Northern' way because maybe it's not. Although I sometimes think it would have gone down real swell at one of the older nighters....it can sure be danced to.

Happy Wigan Casino Anniversary Opening Sept 23rd 1973
Ratt replied to Zoomsoulblue's topic in All About the SOUL
Ditto, sheep. That name does not ring a bell.....could be me also of course. -
Till the first last night.....like it.....I got bored of them, how many was it? In the end I don't think I went to the actual 'last' one. They had blown a gasket anyway, died a death, sunk to an all time low, blah blah.

St. Ives surely was the best. Loved Wigan, but when the oldies room opened at Ives, there were individual people filling the place, all in their own world, or more precisely on their own planet. I never did get to have a go with Filon, but rest assured over the next 30 years or more I hammered just about everything, and they repaid me in kind. But I'm still up for a soul night or nighter, just take it a bit easier on the potions.......most of the time!!!!
-
1975, St. Ives, totally fcking blocked on G & Clears caps, didn't feel like standing up or sitting down, so tried a bit of dancing. Useless I was, but didn't realize it until some chick started laughing. That freaked me a bit, but then I couldn't get rid of her and my dancing improved bit by bit.

On a slightly different Bettye subject. Does anyone know if that early days video of her performing 'Let Me Down Easy' is available to watch/get anywhere. It was on the 'tube' for years before it got pulled, and I used to watch it in awe at least monthly. These days, every time she gets mentioned I am brought back to images of it. She's wearing a long, body hugging goldish coloured dress, I just know that many of you will know the one.
-
To all who replied, a big thank you. It makes interesting reading for me and it's fantastic to see the photo of the the actual disc. I think that my conclusion would be that it is 'one of those tracks' that takes us back to days past, great days, greater nights at the Casino. Oooh where did it all go, chomping at the bit, dodging cops, all of it.
-
Can anyone give me info on one of my 'still' fave tracks, The Silhouettes-Not Me baby. It was pretty much only heard by me and mates at the Casino, and also pretty much not heard at all these days. What label and price would it be these days. Whenever I ask local DJ's if they can give it a spin, I just get blank looks or rueful shakes of the head.

Much as I love the Gloria Taylor version, which I do remember. It's playing with my mind; a memory of being in the St Ives nighter (others also) and hearing back to back, the vocal, then instrumental, with the vocal being a man, who I always thought was Al Kent. It sounded like him anyway.
