  2. Event: Glastonbury Soul Club Review: 5 stars by Matt. Event Date: 26 Oct 2024 Many thanks for Pete, Paul, Julie and Liz for putting on this top event. It was great to hear some top tunes from the guests John Drake & Bryan Rookes (aka Rusty), also from Pete and Paul. A great selection of records over many soul genres. Something for everyone from some great oldies to the rare and underplayed. Well worth the journey and I will definitely be back in the future. Great to meet up with old and new friends, a really friendly club wit... Tap to view the full event review
  3. Event: 45 Revolutions Review: 5 stars by Geoff. Event Date: 25 Oct 2024 My third visit to this great club which I find is a breath of fresh air musically. Sandy and I arrived around 8ish to find the music playing and quite a few friends already seated. Resident Alan Massey was on the decks playing some nice medium tempo tunes, followed by the other resident Tony Poff who upped the tempo considerably and played quite a few tracks I didnt know. Tony was followed by the first guest DJ Dave Flint who played an absol... Tap to view the full event review

  6. Ace Records release day with a hat full of 45s let loose. Two additions to the Kent Select Imprint Kenneth Wright / Miss Louistine - The Souls Of Black Folks / Extra-Extra - City 097 Soul connoisseurs are adventurous folk and the emergence of a previously unknown singer/songwriter is big news among the cognoscenti. The only trace of Atlanta’s Kenneth Wright is a handful of unrecorded song titles on BMI represented by Aware’s publishing company Act One. At least a dozen of his recordings have recently been found in the Aware tape vaults and ‘The Souls Of Black Folks’ is the pick of them. It features Kenneth’s vocals and an equally impressive unknown female lead who adds more mystery to the project. From the same Atlanta label source comes Miss Louistine’s take on the Sam Dees’ song ‘Extra, Extra’. Originally recorded by Ben E King as an album track, Louistine’s punchier take featured on a recent 100 Club Anniversary 45 and is well in-demand. keneth-wright-kent-clip.mp3 Miss-Louistines-clip.mp3 Berna-Dean - Don’t Try To Tell Me / Laughing On The Outside - City 095 Bernadine or Berna-Dean Washington recorded seven singles for producer Dave Bartholomew in New Orleans in the early 60s. A protégée of Earl King, her final single was released on Los Angeles’ GNP Crescendo label in 1964 and is stylistically similar to her previous Imperial and Post 45s. ‘Don’t Try To Tell Me’ and ‘Laughing On The Outside’ were cut for GNP but the company never followed up on her ‘This Is The City’ single. Both tracks are in a more soulful style than her released sides and are attracting much attention on the current retro R&B scene and with the rare soul crowd also. This is their first public hearing. Berna-Dean-a.mp3 Berna-Dean-b-clip.mp3 One new Kent Repro 45 Richard Temple / Jimmy Conwell - That Beatin’ Rhythm / Cigarette Ashes - Repro 21 Little needs to be said about these two Mirwood Monsters, but to have both tracks on the same 45 is a righteous luxury. ‘That Beatin’ Rhythm’ is the epitome of the Northern Soul dance scene and has been a call to the floor for fifty years now. The instrumental flip (credited to the actual singer of the A side) was equally massive at the time, but has been somewhat neglected in recent years - the vocal version gaining most DJ spins. One New Deep Soul 45 Miss Louistine / Sam Dees - Con Me / Con Me Kent - Deep Soul 18 Miss Louistine’s version of ‘Con Me’ was one of the best Deep Soul finds of recent years. The Paragons smooth Chicago reading of Dees’ composition that came out in 1975 has long been admired, but this southern soul treatment of the now-classic is jaw-dropping. To really focus on the masterpiece of a song, we have added Dees own take as the flip. That also remained unissued until Kent accessed the tapes in 1998 and is finally a single. Miss-Louistine-deep-clip.mp3 sam-dees-deep-clip.mp3 Availability 45s available via Ace Records website - (tap), and various record stores including our very own Source Store - (tap)

  9. Event: Grosvenor Rooms 16th Anniversary Review: 4 stars by Longin The Tooth. Event Date: 19 Oct 2024 This weeks adventure led us to The Grosvenor Rooms, where it had been a considerable time since lasted visited. When we arrived we just managed to get some seats as it was packed. This gave us some hope that we were in for a great night of music. If you enjoyed hearing the more common Northern Soul then this would be ideal for you. All of the DJs played good sets and when Ted came on to play his set as per usual he did not disappoint. 10. Event: Ashton Ukrainian Club Review: 5 stars by Agentsmith. Event Date: 19 Oct 2024 Yes, i rate Ashton Uky as a 5* function because quite simply, IT IS!. Shirley and me werent the only contingent from the noisy neighbours over thills and i dare say a few more from elsewhere that dont originate in the red rose county. Nevertheless, likeminded folk congregate where the music is best....thankfully Chris Churms magnet dosnt stand on its own otherwise, wed never get in, it would be packed out solid. As it is, its always busy...and yes,... Tap to view the full event review

Lovely to see everyone after so long and I thought the music was fab all night. I must mention the sound system, it really did spoil it for me the other times I visited, but I couldnt fault it at all at the weekend, and it makes such a difference. Great job Chris and team, it sounded fab The four stars are for the fact I was DJing, had to take a star off Tap to view the full event review

  14. Event: Ashton Ukrainian Club Review: 5 stars by Mickyfinn. Event Date: 19 Oct 2024 Walking through those familiar doors, is walking into another dimension, a dimension of sight and sound. Its the middle ground between light and shadow, of velvet whispers and glistening faces. You have just entered the Soul Zone. Arriving later than usual, so we unfortunately missed Phil Dunns opening slot. Ian Wills set was box office, loved it. Thought the music was a good mix and enjoyed catching up with a few folk I hadnt seen for ages. Bit of a slow burner initially but filled up and there were plenty in and dancing by 9pm. Thought the sound system was a million times better than last time I went too Missed most of Phils early set but what I caught was great; Willsy played a really nice mix of high quality sixties from Wigan onwards; Tim has forgotten more ...
