  2. Another upcoming classic vinyl lp reissue from Ace Records via their 70s imprint Southbound Fatback - Let's Do It Again - Southbound - Sew 168 Release date 28 June 2024 Release notes Formed by drummer Bill Curtis in 1970 the Fatback Band signed to Perception Records who issued this debut album in America in 1972. Recorded at Blue Rock Studio in New York, “Let’s Do It Again” featuring the soon to be patented Fatback sound, the album included originals like ‘Street Dance’ – that became a Billboard R&B hit in 1973 – ‘Free Form’, ‘Take A Ride (On The Soul Train)’ , ‘Give Me One More Chance’, ‘Goin’ To See My Baby’ and the title track. There were also cover versions of Jimmy Webb’s ‘Wichita Lineman’, David Gates ‘Baby I’m A Want You’ and the evergreen ‘Green Green Grass Of Home’. “Let’s Do It Again” has been out of print for many years and Ace are delighted to be reissuing it on vinyl - with the full cooperation of Fatback founder Bill Curtis. Full details and purchase options via the Ace Website https://acerecords.co.uk/lets-do-it-again Southbound Info Back in 1989, Doctor Soul first slapped Southbound’s bottom and welcomed it into the Ace family as a new baby sister for Kent and BGP. Kent and BGP’s remit were both much more defined by certain eras and genres of black American music than they are. Southbound was intended as a place to showcase the 1970s repertoire that Ace had acquired via the purchase of New York’s Spring label. Nowadays you can find a great deal more modern-crossover soul on Kent, and 70s/80s soul and dance on BGP, than in 1989. As a result, Southbound’s role within the Ace family is also less rigidly defined Youtube Album Playlist

  5. A very recent release from Demon Music Group via their Edsel label Release notes and more below... The definitive collection of the legendary song-writing trio Holland-Dozier-Holland 68 tracks taken from the period between 1969-1977 when the trio had started labels Hot Wax, Invictus And Music Merchant Extensive liner notes by Stuart Cosgrove known for his award-winning Soul Trilogy Detroit 67: the Year That Changed Soul, Memphis 68: The Tragedy of Southern Soul and Harlem 69: the Future of Soul. Holland, Dozier and Holland are arguably the greatest songwriters ever. More prolific than Lennon and McCartney, they shaped “the Sound of Young America” and propelled the Motown sound in the mid-1960s into a creative stratosphere unmatched by any other independent music label. Their trademark was catchy teenage love songs delivered energetically by previously unknown Detroit groups like The Supremes, the Four Tops, Martha & the Vandellas & Marvin Gaye. Although synonymous with Berry Gordy’s Motown, it was their departure from Motown after a stand-off strike in 1967 and a brutal legal battle that led them to run their own group of labels, Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant. This compilation is a definitive look at this period in history, exploring how H-D-H, under a new guise ‘The `Creative Corporation’, drove the next generation of soul music in a myriad of different ways, towards funk, underground disco and jazz. One of their major ambitions when the doors to Invictus first opened was to find the same conveyer belt creativity that had underpinned Motown and find acts that could replicate the national success of the Four Tops, the Supremes and Marvin Gaye. The fact that they partially succeeded is no minor achievement. Depicted by author Stuart Cosgrove who wrote the award-winning Soul Trilogy, a series of books on soul music and social change – Detroit 67: the Year That Changed Soul, Memphis 68: The Tragedy of Southern Soul which won the Penderyn Prize, as Music Book of the Year in 2018, and Harlem 69: the Future of Soul. Featuring 68 tracks, the collection explores the creativity, expression and progression that the trio were going through at this point including tracks by Chairman Of The Board, Freda Payne, Honey Cone, Glass House, Flaming Ember, 8th Day, Laura Lee & Eloise Laws. 13. Just released... Shrine Records - Rare Soul Sides: Washington DC 1965-1967 'Seven new Shrine 45s, complete with an attractively packaged box containing rarely seen photos; soul heaven!' A 7 x 45 box set from Kent Records A 7 x 45 Box Set from Kent Records containing 14 sides billed as 'worthy of single releases' Track Listing and Audio Side 1 01 We Called It Love - Barbara Long 02 Take It From Me - Traci Side 2 01 Mind In A Bind - The Epsilons 02 Mad At The World - The Epsilons Side 3 01 Watch Your Step - The Cautions 02 No Other Way - The Cautions Side 4 01 Wait Till I Get There - Tippie & The Wisemen 02 I Wouldn't Mind Crying - Tippie & The Wisemen Side 5 01 I'm A Lover - Sidney Hall 02 Do What I Want - The Cavaliers Side 6 01 Hush Baby - The Prophets 02 If I Had (One Gold Piece) - The Prophets Side 7 01 I Won't Believe It Til I See It - Jimmy Armstrong 02 It's Gonna Take Love - Jimmy Armstrong Release Notes Preview Barbara Long’s great, but elusive, Shrine recording - issued on sister-label Jet Set - deservedly leads off the package and is coupled with the previously CD-only ‘Take It From Me’ by the mysterious Traci – an early tape find. Like Barbara Long, the Epsilons ‘Mind In A Bind’ was issued just after the label folded and sneaked out on Washington’s Hem imprint. It is re-released for the first time as a 7” with their ‘Mad At The World’ debuting as a UK 45. The same scenario applies to the Cautions’ marvellous mid-tempo single ‘Watch Your Step’. We have coupled it with their ever-in-demand ‘No Other Way’; long deleted from its 2009 repress. Despite Shrine’s reputation for dance tracks, one of the labels most-revered recordings is the beautiful Tippie & The Wisemen ballad ‘Wait Til I Get There’. That previously unissued number came out on the first Horace’s LP in 1990. A decade later Ady Croasdell found the tape of their ‘I Wouldn’t Mind Crying’ in the Universal Studios vaults in Hollywood. This pleased the song’s writer Eddie Singleton who hadn’t heard this particular favourite of his since the recording date. Sidney Hall (of the Enjoyables) cut the impassioned beat ballad ‘I’m A Lover’ as a solo act; it has its first UK 45 release here. We have coupled it with the catchy, raucous groove of the incredibly rare Cavaliers Shrine 45 ‘Do What I Want’. this has improved audio from its previous releases. The Prophets gorgeous harmony ballad ‘Huh Baby’ gets its first 45 re-release too and we have put a slightly alternate version, found in the tapes, of ‘If I Had One Gold Piece’, the original B side. Finally, another Shrine-recorded Jet Set 45 by Jimmy Armstrong ‘I Won’t Believe It Till I See It’ makes its Kent debut, along with his killer blues ballad ‘It’s Gonna Take Time’ which has never been released before. Seven new Shrine 45s, complete with an attractively packaged box containing rarely seen photos; soul heaven!
