New Kent 45s - Soul Interiors, Caroline Crawford, Sam Nesbit
Source Team posted an article in Soul Music News
The latest releases from Ace records includes 2 x Kent Select Soul 45s and one Kent Repro 45 Details, scans, audio and Kent's release notes follow below... Carolyn Crawford /Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford - It Takes A Lotta Teardrops / I’m In Love - Kent Select 098 We follow up Carolyn Crawford’s recent big selling Kent 45 ‘Get Up And Dance’ with another top class Mickey Stevenson production on ‘It Takes A Lotta Teardrops’. The Leon Ware and Vicki Basemore song was also covered by Kim Weston but neither version was released at the time. The recording is in a classic Motown style and this could have been the reason why it was shelved in 1972, being somewhat dated – though still perfect for Motown and Northern Soul devotees. The flip is from Carolyn Crawford’s collaboration with Hodges, James & Smith in 1971 when the foursome released two 45s on the M’Pingo label. ‘I’m In Love’ was a more current sound for the time and is perfect for Modern and Crossover rooms today. Carolyn Crawford - It Takes A Lotta Teardrops select-098a-clip.mp3 Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford - I’m In Love select-098b-clip.mp3 The Soul Interiors – The Inside Guys / My Friend Heartaches - Kent Select 096 The mysterious and oddly named Soul Interiors recorded two terrific sides for Mickey Stevenson in 1972, ‘The Inside Guys’ - a sublime dancer and the deep soul harmony of ‘My Friend Heartaches’. Nothing is known about the group’s line-up, but they really do have a feel of fellow Los Angelenos the Exits. The musical backing to ‘The Inside Guys’ was also used on the Classic Example’s ‘Right On’, this variation is even more pertinent to the rare soul dance scene, with lyrics akin to ‘The In Crowd’ and the track has been a 100 Club floor-packer for a couple of years now. This is its first release. The flip will appeal to lovers of deep soul harmony. The Soul Interiors - The Inside Guys select-96a-clip.mp3 The Soul Interiors - My Friend Heartaches select-96b-clip.mp3 Sam Nesbit - Black Mother Goose / Chase Those Clouds Away - REPRO 20 This killer double-sider was one of the first US imports to go “big” on the rare soul scene at the Twisted Wheel and Blackpool Mecca in the early 70s. Soul guru Dave Godin championed the record and had planned to release it on his fledgling 444 label, but it only got as far as the test pressing stage. The catchy dancer A-side Black Mother Goose was the one that got played, but much later the Modern Soul scene picked up on the beautiful mid-tempo soul of ‘Chase Those Clouds Away’ and demand for the disc virtually doubled. Throughout the 1970s founder Henry Stone’s TK Records rose up to be one of the most important forced in black music, successfully pioneering the evolution in musical fashions from the early gritty funk and soul at the start of the decade to the arrival of disco in the mid-70s. This album is a rollercoaster journey across soul, funk, disco and boogie, a party-rocking dancefloor-filling collection of monster tracks that includes million-selling hits such as Betty Wright’s classic ‘Clean Up Woman’, Timmy Thomas’s ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’, T-Connection’s ‘Do What You Wanna Do’, anthemic rare groove club hits including Gwen McCrae’s massive ‘All This Love I’m Giving’ and Milton Wright’s ‘Keep It Up’, plus a host of hard-to-find gems and rarities from the likes of Raw Soul Express, Chocolate Clay, Beginning of the End, Robert Moore, Clarence Reid, Little Beaver, Paulette Reeves and many more. Based in the industrial Hialeah district of Miami, music man Henry Stone surrounded himself with a host of creative artists, musicians, songwriters and producers who created an immediately identifiable TK sound as well as making musical stars out of many of its artists. Miami Sound 2 comes with extensive sleevenotes as well as an exclusive interview with Steve Alaimo, co-founder with Henry Stone of this musical empire. The album also features the photography of TK in-house photographer Larry Warmoth, whose rarely seen striking and unique images of Gwen McRae, Betty Wright, Clarence Reid and others offer a fascinating window into the pioneering record company. Bobby Hutton - Album & 45s Release - Expansion Records
Source Team posted an article in Soul Music News
Thanks to member Mark aka @Thinksmart for flagging this release up in our forums A quick shout about the latest releases from Expansion Records featuring Bobby Hutton Release Notes This is the first reissue of the “Piece Of The Action” LP since 1973, and the CD has bonus tracks with everything Bobby Hutton recorded between 1969 and 1974. Everything taken from the original master stapes and restored. Bobby Hutton is from Detroit, Michigan and began his career after winning a talent show at the 20 Grand nightclub. In 1971 he performed on the very first nationally aired Soul Train TV programme. He cites Jackie Wilson as his biggest influence. He began writing under his real name Harold Hutton, then Billy Davis at Chess Records persuaded the change to Bobby Hutton. He had decided not to pursue a career at Motown, and after one single for Checker, then another at Blue Rock (a subsidiary of Mercury) he moved to the Philips label for the huge Northern Soul favourite, “Come See What's Left Of Me" which was first played at the Stafford All-Nighters back in1985, covered up as Casanova Brown. Talents that produced and arranged for Bobby during those Blue Rock/Philips sessions include Donny Hathaway and Joshie Jo Armstead, and in fact it was with Jo that Bobby co-wrote that Northern Soul classic. The Philips tracks are all on the CD as bonus tracks to the Piece Of The Action” album for ABC Records in 1973. Produced by Dee Ervin, there are several fine tracks to enjoy but surely none better than the Gary Wright-penned “Lend A Hand” which became one of the biggest 'modern' Northern Soul tracks of all-time after spins at venues like the Highland Room at the Blackpool Mecca and Wigan Casino. The track was first championed by DJ Colin Curtis in 1974. The album is beautifully produced with vocal accompaniments from artists including Patti Hamilton of The Lovelites, Jean Plum, Mikki Farrow and Frankie Karl. It received great reviews at the time and that persuaded ABC to release a non-album follow-up 45 produced by the brilliant McKinley Jackson and Reginald Dozier credited “Loving You, Wanting You, Needing You, Wanting You”/'Watch Where You’re Going” which is an elusive, highly sought-after single by soul collectors worldwide (now an Expansion 7” reissue). In 2007, Bobby was honoured as he was nominated the best singer in Chicago, quite an achievement and something that Bobby is quite rightly very proud of. Word sent in of a new digital album release from Japan Tokyo, Japan – Dadmandog, a project bringing back the sounds of early 80s Boogie and Post-Disco, is set to release its debut full-length album, 2 Hours Behind, on 21 September, 2024. 2 Hours Behind delves into the transitional period from analog to digital in the disco scene, perfectly recreating the sound of studio sessions from that era. Laid-back yet tight rhythms, groovy basslines, and shimmering vocoder create an authentic early 80s Boogie experience. With city pop and nu-disco gaining renewed attention, Dadmandog focuses on the roots of the genre – funk. Using the latest digital technology, the album achieves an old-school sound reminiscent of analog warmth. Featuring nine continuous, danceable tracks, 2 Hours Behind is a must-listen for funk enthusiasts. Album Artwork and Title The album artwork, shot by Japanese photographer lyuhuji in a Xinjiang, China disco, captures the retro interior and unique dance culture, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. The album’s title, “2 Hours Behind,” refers to Xinjiang Time, two hours behind Beijing, symbolizing the album’s timeless, old-school sound. About Dadmandog Dadmandog, the solo project of Yamato Shibasaki, is known for its distinctive grooves that capture the raw energy as if a funk band jamming in the studio. Dadmandog Official Website: https://dadman.dog Info via website One enjoyment of funk, or rare groove, is the act of “digging”. This is the pleasure of discovering rare and previously unknown records in record shops, and encountering new music. Once a piece of music becomes well-known, it inevitably loses its novelty. These rare grooves are, of course, “old records”, and it’s virtually impossible for “new 80s funk records releases” to be made unless we could somehow time travel. With the advancements of the internet, video platforms like YouTube, and the ease of cross-border e-commerce that made everything way more accessible, discovering unknown funk has become more difficult. The Dadmandog project aims to provide a new digging experience for funk lovers, listeners, and DJs. Our goal was to create technically a “new” 80s funk record. 2 Hours Behind by Dadmandog

Event: Wigan Casino S Mr M S 50th Sold Out Review: 5 stars by Mickyfinn. 4 member rated this review helpful. Event Date: 14 Sep 2024 The absence of any reviews compelled me to write something of this magical Day. There are no shortage of Soul events that play familiar oldies, but few have the pedigree to pull in a huge crowd of lifelong soul fans. This was such an event. For those of us who usually seek out something a bit less familiar, and gravitate to the rare and underplayed scene. And even the crossover/modern side of things. It’s great to remind yourself occasionally, why w... Tap to view the full event review
