  1. interesting move from ebay Uk msm quote/link 'Online retailer eBay has scrapped fees for private sellers across almost all of its categories as it attempts to keep fast-growing rivals such as Depop and Vinted at arm’s length. The move means eBay’s UK sellers no longer have to pay transaction fees, except for cars, motorcycles and other vehicles.' 'On Tuesday, eBay said its move, which has taken effect immediately, meant private sellers would no longer pay so-called final value fees or regulatory operating fees when they sold on the site.' https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/oct/01/online-retailer-ebay-scraps-fees-for-private-sellers-in-uk
  2. Event: Stockport Ukrainian Club Review: 4 stars by Longin The Tooth. Event Date: 28 Sep 2024 This event was my port of call this weekend It was a small event with a big heart. The moment I walked into the room I saw that it was well attended and to hear tunes unknown to me. This theme continued for most of the night, there some of the top 500 played, but in general it was an education. Added to which the floor itself was good and a joy to do some moves on. The room was just the right size not to be intimidating, so ideal for somebody wh... Tap to view the full event review

  17. Photos and Info sent in from Lorne Anton, who while based in Chatham with the RN took these photos at The Central Gillingham in 1967 View full article
  18. Photos and Info sent in from Lorne Anton, who while based in Chatham with the RN took these photos at The Central Gillingham in 1967 Maxine Brown and the Q-Set at the Central R&B Club, Gillingham 3rd December 1967 Lorne's accompanying words The date I originally gave for the Maxine Brown gig at the Central R&B Club, Gillingham is wrong, apologies! The correct date should be 3/12/1967. This was, I think, her second UK Tour with some 30 odd gigs between Sept 67 and Feb 68. She was one hard working lady! She delivered a great, hard driving set, with loads of personality, the night I saw her - class! She was backed by the Q-set who delivered a tight set that really swung behind her. I think at that time they were Anthony Pereira, Guitar; Tony Omalley, Hammond Organ; Chester Simon, Bass; George Lee, Tenor; Lloyd Smith, Tenor; Herschell Holder, Trumpet; Byron Ly-fook, Drums; I wasn't really into Soul but my Soul preferences were much more Stax style than Tamla Motown. Otis Reading, Wilson Picket, Joe Tex, Aretha, that kind of stuff. I was more into blues so it was the Marquee Club rather than the Flamingo. The Central was a great venue to see live bands in the 60 s. In the 50 s it used to be a half way stop for excursion busses from London going to the Coast - the pee stop - and sometimes you could see 20 / 25 busses outside. This came to an end when the M2 and Farthing Corner Services opened. The pub was famous for ifs collection of Toby Jugs on the shelves round the walls and it soldiered on till the 1980s when it was sold and demolished to be replaced by a housing estate. What else - either housing or a Tesco! Another good venue was the Nags Head in Battersea and that suffered-the same fate! Progress eh? Photos Site Note: Great moment in time photos, many thanks go out to Lorne for sharing, very much appreciated.

  22. The latest releases from Ace records includes 2 x Kent Select Soul 45s and one Kent Repro 45 Details, scans, audio and Kent's release notes follow below... Carolyn Crawford /Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford - It Takes A Lotta Teardrops / I’m In Love - Kent Select 098 We follow up Carolyn Crawford’s recent big selling Kent 45 ‘Get Up And Dance’ with another top class Mickey Stevenson production on ‘It Takes A Lotta Teardrops’. The Leon Ware and Vicki Basemore song was also covered by Kim Weston but neither version was released at the time. The recording is in a classic Motown style and this could have been the reason why it was shelved in 1972, being somewhat dated – though still perfect for Motown and Northern Soul devotees. The flip is from Carolyn Crawford’s collaboration with Hodges, James & Smith in 1971 when the foursome released two 45s on the M’Pingo label. ‘I’m In Love’ was a more current sound for the time and is perfect for Modern and Crossover rooms today. Carolyn Crawford - It Takes A Lotta Teardrops select-098a-clip.mp3 Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford - I’m In Love select-098b-clip.mp3 The Soul Interiors – The Inside Guys / My Friend Heartaches - Kent Select 096 The mysterious and oddly named Soul Interiors recorded two terrific sides for Mickey Stevenson in 1972, ‘The Inside Guys’ - a sublime dancer and the deep soul harmony of ‘My Friend Heartaches’. Nothing is known about the group’s line-up, but they really do have a feel of fellow Los Angelenos the Exits. The musical backing to ‘The Inside Guys’ was also used on the Classic Example’s ‘Right On’, this variation is even more pertinent to the rare soul dance scene, with lyrics akin to ‘The In Crowd’ and the track has been a 100 Club floor-packer for a couple of years now. This is its first release. The flip will appeal to lovers of deep soul harmony. The Soul Interiors - The Inside Guys select-96a-clip.mp3 The Soul Interiors - My Friend Heartaches select-96b-clip.mp3 Sam Nesbit - Black Mother Goose / Chase Those Clouds Away - REPRO 20 This killer double-sider was one of the first US imports to go “big” on the rare soul scene at the Twisted Wheel and Blackpool Mecca in the early 70s. Soul guru Dave Godin championed the record and had planned to release it on his fledgling 444 label, but it only got as far as the test pressing stage. The catchy dancer A-side Black Mother Goose was the one that got played, but much later the Modern Soul scene picked up on the beautiful mid-tempo soul of ‘Chase Those Clouds Away’ and demand for the disc virtually doubled. Throughout the 1970s founder Henry Stone’s TK Records rose up to be one of the most important forced in black music, successfully pioneering the evolution in musical fashions from the early gritty funk and soul at the start of the decade to the arrival of disco in the mid-70s. This album is a rollercoaster journey across soul, funk, disco and boogie, a party-rocking dancefloor-filling collection of monster tracks that includes million-selling hits such as Betty Wright’s classic ‘Clean Up Woman’, Timmy Thomas’s ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’, T-Connection’s ‘Do What You Wanna Do’, anthemic rare groove club hits including Gwen McCrae’s massive ‘All This Love I’m Giving’ and Milton Wright’s ‘Keep It Up’, plus a host of hard-to-find gems and rarities from the likes of Raw Soul Express, Chocolate Clay, Beginning of the End, Robert Moore, Clarence Reid, Little Beaver, Paulette Reeves and many more. TK Records functioned more like a close-knit family than a typical record company. Based in the industrial Hialeah district of Miami, music man Henry Stone surrounded himself with a host of creative artists, musicians, songwriters and producers who created an immediately identifiable TK sound as well as making musical stars out of many of its artists. Miami Sound 2 comes with extensive sleevenotes as well as an exclusive interview with Steve Alaimo, co-founder with Henry Stone of this musical empire. The album also features the photography of TK in-house photographer Larry Warmoth, whose rarely seen striking and unique images of Gwen McRae, Betty Wright, Clarence Reid and others offer a fascinating window into the pioneering record company.
