Rare Singles - Benjamin Myers 'A tale of soul music and second chances' First posted in our soul music news section back in January (tap to view) the book 'Rare Singles' by Benjamin Myers (described as 'a love letter to Northern Soul') is officially published today (1st August 2024) The book has had many 'positive' reviews from the 'Mainstream' since then, however some of our members have already expressed 'concerns' about the 'validity' of the book and some have stated that perhaps a 'wait and see' approach before purchase may be best As such a Kindle preview is now available below (via our built in kindle preview feature) which may be of assistance for those who are waiting to pull the trigger on a purchase, you can find it below, just tap the image of the cover for it to launch.. Book Info Bloomsbury has acquired Rare Singles, a "full-throated hymn to the sorrows and triumphs of soul music" from author Benjamin Myers. From the Back Cover Dinah has always lived in Scarborough. Trapped with her feckless husband and useless son, her one release comes at her town's Northern Soul nights, where she gets to put on her best and lose herself in the classics. Dinah has an especial hero: Bucky Bronco, who recorded a string of soul gems in the late Sixties and then vanished off the face of the earth. When she manages to contact Bucky she can't believe her luck. Over in Chicago, Bucky Bronco is down on his luck – and has been since the loss of his beloved wife. The best he can hope for is to make ends meet, and try and stay high. But then an unexpected invitation arrives, from someone he’s never met, to come to somewhere he’s never heard of. About the Author Benjamin Myers was born in Durham in 1976. He is the author of ten books, including The Offing, which was an international bestseller and selected for the Radio 2 Book Club; The Gallows Pole, which won the Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction and has been adapted as a BBC series by Shane Meadows; Beastings which was awarded the Portico Prize for Literature, and Pig Iron which won the inaugural Gordon Burn Prize. He has also published non-fiction, poetry and crime novels and his journalism has appeared in publications including the Guardian, New Statesman, TLS, Caught by the River and many more. He lives in the Upper Calder Valley, West Yorkshire. Event: Summer In The Park 11 Review: 5 stars by Mickyfinn. 1 member rated this review helpful. Event Date: 28 Jul 2024 Summer in the Park was a very enjoyable and yet different all dayer. It started for us in a peculiarly gentrified way, sat in the gardens enjoying the sunshine, drinking cold beer and listening to the music that was piped outside. We finally ventured indoors as afternoon moved to evening. Neil Rushton was on in the main Northern Soul room (Pendle), where there was run of some familiar 70’s tunes: O’Jays, Jeff Perry and The Montclairs. This was fo... Tap to view the full event review

Event: Blackburn Oldies Review: 5 stars by Longin The Tooth. Event Date: 21 Jul 2024 Well this weeks adventure was to attend the Blackburn Oldies. What can I say, but what a choice!!! The friends I went along with have been there before so they knew what expect, but as a newbie it was a voyage of discovery. And what a discovery. As soon as we walked through the door the music hit us and there were no top 500 records being played. The music was excellent all through the afternoon and you couldnt keep my friend off the dance floo... Tap to view the full event review
