  1. Saturday 24th June The Night Owl & Diplomats of Sound present playing live THE ALLERGIES The duo of DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat have been delighting dance floors and lighting up the radio airwaves since forming The Allergies in 2012. Year in, year out, they've sharpened their skills on the turntables and in the studio, dropping one dynamite record after another. Clocking up 'Album of The Day' gongs, national ad campaign spots, and Radio 6 Music A-list status, the pair show no sign of stopping the fun. They're about to cut the ribbon on their fifth album, Promised Land. Another showcase for their feel good funk, soul sampling savvy, and party-starting hip-hop. As usual, the Bristol-based beatmakers have assembled a crack team to help bring their loops to life. LA rap legend, Andy Cooper is back on board, alongside the mighty pipes of Marietta Smith - Both staples of The Allergies live show act. Plus, guest spots from some super special MCs from both sides of The Pond, and quite possibly the most explosive sample-heavy tracks of their career, so far. Over the last year they found some light amongst the darkness, seeking out solace and release by making beautiful music, dug from old record stacks. And they can't wait to get back on the road, letting everyone back into their world, once more. "The Allergies music is big, bouncy and fat! Just how I like my funk" - Craig Charles, BBC Radio 6 Music + SAM REDMORE (DJ) Doors open 8pm, Tickets from £12 entry here https://bit.ly/allergies23 or £16 on the door includes club night after.

  12. Town Hall and The Night Owl come together to bring The Big Birmingham Soul Night! Saturday 12th February (rescheduled from November) Town Hall is one of the city's most renowned and prestigious music venues, and has joined forces with a relative newcomer which has already made its mark on the UK soul scene and voted Best New Venue by the Birmingham Mail readers last year, The Night Owl. The two venues are working together to bring back The Big Birmingham Soul Night this April. The event, which harks back to soul nights of the 60's and 70's, will be programmed by The Night Owl and held at Birmingham Town Hall. This beautiful listed building boasts a giant wooden floor, perfect for Northern Soul and Mod style dancing, with an elegant balcony for those who would prefer to just relax and enjoy the dancing below. There will also a smaller second room of music, with its own bar and seating, record buying and selling and more. Confirmed to head up this evening is legendary DJ Colin Curtis, who began DJing in the late 1960s at the Crystal Lake Ballroom and the infamous Golden Torch in Stoke and later Blackpool Mecca. He is often cited as being one of the most important tastemakers of black music in the UK. Colin will be playing music from his Torch days, so you can expect the Northern Soul classics that Colin broke and much more, all on original vinyl. DJs Colin Curtis (Golden Torch/Blackpool Mecca) Sonny & Spare (The Boogaloo/The Night Owl) PEP (Catacombs) Mazzy Snape (The Night Owl) Adrian Hawkins (AWOL) 9pm till 4am £12 advance tickets available here- https://bit.ly/BhamSoulFeb from £14 on the door
  13. Haha that he has! Doesn't look like a stable situation to me
  14. Haha makes me laugh how different people's opinions are, everyone likes what they like... Just wondered if there was a historical reason or anything, maybe I've got it wrong anyway. Shit nights ha ha oh dear here we go again, I do wonder why I disappear off here for months and months on end. Now back to the advert...
  15. Thanks Rick, might be a bit heavy do you think? I do have a pal who's a great carpenter though so will investigate!
  16. Does anyone know where I can get some double/large 45 record boxes like those jazzman ones? Looks like they sold out at the time but I've been looking for ages for something similar with no luck I can't seem to find anything that isn't either really ugly or really impractical Love my vintage small 45's boxes, but it's hard to carry more than a couple at a time due to awkward handles. Has anyone seen any reproduction / vintage larger record boxes (like double or triple size of normal boxes)? Either in a shop or online? I don't like the modern looking metal ones Any help appreciated
  17. No it's not tongue in cheek haha Just when I've been outside of Brum and heard it play it's not been as much of a dance-floor filler although obviously it's a really well known song I just wondered if there was any reason or if it's just random

  19. What they've done is use inspiration from a few things and pulled it together - so there is something from Africa I think combined with Northern Soul - it's not strictly a Northern Soul influenced thing. The clothes and production of it all does seem more Soul Train than Northern but it still looks fun and vibrant, good music etc. I doubt anyone is going to be so affected by it that they turn up dressed like that to an all nighter haha It's not like anything else I think that's their idea? Fashion draws from cultures old and new to make something unique or that's the idea? On another note, The Night is a massive tune in Birmingham, instant floor-filler but I've noticed it's not so big elsewhere (North or South), I wonder why that is?
  20. I don't know how to delete this post but I've got the info now
  21. Planning a visit to see some pals & thought I would try to combine, can't see anything on the guide?
  22. This went so well thanks so much to everyone who came along!
  23. Check out the floor !

  25. Town Hall is one of the city’s most renowned and prestigious music venues, and has joined forces with a relative newcomer to the soul scene which has already made its mark and been voted Best New Venue by the Birmingham Mail readers last year, The Night Owl. The two venues are working together to bring The Big Birmingham Soul Night this April. The Night Owl is a small intimate club and after listening to feedback from some Northern Soul fans that it was not big enough for a big soul night has taken the advice and found a building and big wooden dance floor worthy of the occasion! The event, which harks back to soul nights of the 60's and 70's, will be programmed by The Night Owl and held at Birmingham Town Hall. This beautiful listed building boasts a giant wooden floor, perfect for Northern Soul style dancing, with an elegant balcony for those who would prefer to just relax and enjoy the dancing below. He is often cited as being one of the most important tastemakers of black music in the UK. Colin will be playing music from his Torch days, so you can expect the Northern Soul classics that Colin broke and much more, all on original vinyl. Also playing in the main room (original vinyl only) is veteran DJ PEP (Wigan Casino), young soul fans Josh Pye (The Soul Hole) and Sonny & Spare (The Boogaloo), Kev Richie (The Scooter Do) and Richard Priest (The Night Owl). The second room will feature resident DJ's from The Night Owl playing 60's and 70's soul, funk, mod, ska and more. To celebrate the first soul night of this scale in years, there will be a Northern Soul flash mob on Saturday 18th March at Grand Central Station, to join the fun email mazzy@nightowlbirmingham.com
