Tapes - just discovered my stash of C90 / C60 tapes - from @ '88 thru to the late 90's dozens of purchased items - Ted Massey vol.1 + 2 etc and loads of my own play-list items - Some serious sounds on some of them - Some 45's never seen since those days and many real rarities and I mean rarities not just expensive one's. Found them stashed in the loft above the good lady's sewing room.

Always a tricky one this - Back in the mid 90's when Goldmine and Discoveries were the two publications to get. I subscribed to the publishers mailing list to get hot off the press copies ahead of the UK based retailers distribution and remember being amazed at an entry in one of the editions where this 45 was listed as Okeh WLP 7200 - First and only time I ever saw it and it was within a mixed genre full page sales list. Nearly choked on my coffee that morning. I was too busy at work and had both that month's editions to trawl through for first up any set-sales and then auctions. It was so easy to miss stuff - Big City Playboy, Lonely Girl and Wrapped around your finger all escaped my initial trawl.

Children - Give it a rest - The proof of the pudding etc. - keeping a decent venue alive is more important than ludicrous copyright claims - I'll be flying in on Friday 3rd from Jersey with my usual box of killers - 53 yrs on from my 1st gig in 1970 and 40 miles down the A6 corridor from my initial gigs at the Fantasia in Quorn, Leics. - rest assured as always you'll hear stuff you've never heard before and certainly haven't got along with plenty of top tunes - what it was always about in my opinion. I didn't spend my life travelling the appalling roads of this nation to the Cats/Mecca/ 76 Club / Junction/Torch/ Ritz/Embankment/100 Club/Leeds Griffin and other clubs and venues too many to name for over half a century to be put off by promoter or ex promoter verbals. - that's always gone on. Give it a go you might be surprised and might just enjoy yourself - plenty of testimonials over these decades. Anyway all the best - just get there

BBC 2 - Northern Soul at the Proms - Tv Broadcast Saturday Night
Vadnochka commented on Mike's article in News Archives
Always a touchy subject - Frankie Valli /Four seasons - The Night - In my world back then - The Night was considered a new release and certainly carried no ' Northern' kudos at all in my neck of the woods - too many brilliant but expensive £5 monsters to be bothering with it. Anybody who had any knowledge of the scene in this period would have highlighted that P.P Arnold - sitting there at the Albert Hall giggling was the artist that produced that epic 1967 Immediate release which went on to carry legendary status and still commands a pretty penny. Alan Day playing it covered up at the Torch - below and to my right - offered it up to the sleeve and exposed the grey Immediate label to my eagle eyes - twigged who the singer was and by the next Tuesday had acquired a demo copy from a lad in Leicester - The rest for me was history. -

The Kettle Drums could have summed it all up - As the era projected was mainly a narrow period of the early 70's and those kettle drums could of heralded the most hyped / wanted sound of them all back then - Lost after the untimely deaths of Cats dj's only to spring back into life courtesy of Minsh. at Hanley Top Rank and the Mecca and the Invitations Ski-ing in the snow was a call to arms at that time. Thought we were going to get it as the overhead shot of the drums came on screen - Good try but it certainly showed how great some of our hero's were in reality as singers / performing artists and what magical thought processes came together to create music that was beyond compare from basically half a century ago. -
I'll talk to you about that tonight

Somebody's got trapped in the auction process - thought they'd bid high to prevent getting sniped at the death, probably not realising - That their top bid became the actual high bid amount the moment they clicked confirm ( maybe not but seen it happen so many times) These auctions don't operate like Ebay.

Just got back from holiday to find the world has gone mad. Or certainly it has in North West Leicestershire and surrounding areas. It appears that anyone who has had a passing interest or relationship with rare soul / northern for the last 50+ yrs is now striding out (either under their own name or a ludicrous pseudonym / stage name - they know who they are) as dj's. I've DJ'd with some of them over the last few yrs and spoken at length to them and their followers. Not a sound between them - or not as I know them. My good lady has banned us from visiting these venues - She's a good old soulie - Brit / Wigan /Cleethorpes from early 70's so she's heard some shite in her time but also knows a sound when she hears one - bought me - Mel Williams - Sweet girl of mine - bless her. and refuses to set foot in any of these venues again (What the boss says etc.). I can understand these people not getting a dime to play garbage, but surely it's not the way forward for any venue or are we surrounded with like minded punters. happy to wallow in a sepia tinted picture of how it never was. Because a lot of them went on the missing list from '78 until 2010 or even later local soul nights are becoming purgatory. There are hundreds nay thousands of quality sounds out there that don't have to cost a king's ransom but these gigs insist on subjecting us to the same old same old. Open your eyes and ears or it will all disappear down the gurgler. I'm off to the Boat tomorrow - I know - same old same old but a lot more expensive. Hopefully Rob & Kate will be there so we can have a moan together - The scene's -----ed.
-
James Barnett - to die for when I got my first copy back in '72 - and a serious rarity at that time - still get's the hairs on the back of your neck. Incidentally that copy got knackered by some drunk twat leaning over the decks at the 'Engine', Coalville as it was being played at their regular Monday night back room gig.

I had to laugh - For the best part a cracking 1st night but as usual the fact that none of the 4 DJ's had got Breakout / Queen of fools / Helen Shapiro or Paul Anka - Get there - all asked for by a group sitting together but repeatedly individually asked by the same 3 guys. Chris Frost flown in from Jersey with 150 killers as those that know know. Great spots from John Coupland and Barry Morley and a not too shabby contribution from older Frost brother Steve in their 3 hr double decking got the 'call yourself a dj' treatment. Hopefully the guy's who did attend and offered comments like ' Hairs on my neck mate - awesome etc will return for Sept. at the Melton British Legion - The original venue but closed for electrical work and the Polish club stepped in to save the night. Even my Mrs was pleasantly surprised at the turn-out and response to some quite frankly rare offerings and thankfully for him the guy that called the promoter and asked whether Steve Frost would be playing mainstream sounds - by which he meant sounds that to all intents and purposes were played out by 1972 ( his domain - he plays on the fact he's known me for over 50yrs but won't countenance anything post '74 ) Local - playing everywhere at each others venues hovering for an invite - It won't happen. Keep posted on here for future details

Had all sorts of results with different techniques mainly failures although did get a perfectly flat 21st Century - Shadow of a memory result after sticking it under 2 editions of John Manship's price guide and forgetting where it was for over a month - only finding it when I went to check a price later - fluke I know but made it saleable as a minter.

Decided life's too short to be going to National and local gigs, trying to support and participate only to find a self serving clique of promoter / dj's are serving up the same old dross almost wherever you go - most with no knowledge / background and most galling - No real records.!!! So despite some of the offering having had a hard life all my sounds are up for sale - they will all be play graded and offered at (in my opinion) a fair price.
