Global Shipping Charges/import Duties? What The Fuk
Vadnochka replied to Whiskyagogo's topic in Look At Your Box
All imports are liable to a 20% import duty (VAT equivalent) for all items worth over £20 so even a £40 sound sent and declared on the label at that value will result in a card being left and a visit to the local sorting office to pay the duty - payable on the total value listed - so on £40 / duty £8 -you can pay on the door step - the Royal Mail will also charge you a further £8.50 handling charge = £56.50 - most of us will have had some experience of this. Most US exporters of long standing declare at $10-ish, keeping it below duty levels. It's when a £300 or higher buy gets declared as such clearly on the forms and a further £68.50 or more gets requested before the packet is released. Global shipping - charges + Duty - going thru' Pitney Bowes is just a further rip-off and ball-ache - everybody wants a piece of the action. Remember governments have no money of their own but have an insatiable demand and need for ever greater income streams - so the Revenue & Customs are becoming ever more diligent in conjunction with the Royal Mail in intercepting chargeable items. As previously mentioned - a US address for forwarding is one way round this -
whoever s*** is on ebay deserves all the flak that's coming their way - can understand the bids up to £30 but the jump to £100+ ?? - if people don't do their provenance checking then they deserve to get shafted And another thing - this magical ( I have no Knowledge / I'm just a poor misunderstood soul trying to sell the contents found down the back of my grandma's commode - that's why its almost always shit that appears) defence is pathetic - they all know

Looking for a copy of Bernard Wills & Fabulous Terrifics Band - The first time I saw you - Rob-Al Anybody got or ever seen one - only have it on tape from mid-nineties - borrowed a copy for a short period of time back then and played it at Wilton & Griffin allnighters. Steve Cheers - price / condition

Just a thought - Given the joshing that takes place between well known dealers is this another example. Pieman - lists sound with usual 'big it up' blurb - despite valuing at £150 - price guide 6th edition Zooman - lists as set-sale - same sound VG++ £100 - This weeks list Pieman - responds - with ludicrous final winning bid declaration Will the winner step forward and proclaim their absolute delight in acquiring this 45. Somehow I don't think so I look forward to the lucky person 'coming out' Or did I just sell too cheap a few months ago as Nick Stevenson alluded too on this subject Steve

Don't talk to me about how much John Manship gets for records
Vadnochka replied to Kegsy's topic in All About the SOUL
Just goes to show - there were 9 bidders on this and a last 8 second snipe by a 3000 + activity buyer got it - HE / SHE won't be selling this on for a profit unless I'm mistaken. Checked my big black book for historic ref; - found it to be too common back in the mid nineties to get a listing - £80 - Andy Dyson John Tefteller always turns up some tasty sounds - many set sale and reasonable - but obviously he read this one right Frosty snr. -
Another Madness Price On A Bootleg 45
Vadnochka replied to Glynthornhill's topic in Look At Your Box
Lads / Lassies You know what it's like, there's always some mug out there who thinks they can get some kudos as a warm up act or local promoter by trying to con the punters that they have a better set of sounds, particularly if at first glance they appear legit when spinning in poorly lit venues and of course they will have done it on the cheap. This was a big bug bear of mine at the Brit in the early / mid 90's - when challenged the response was always - 'the punters like the sounds' Thought about it for a bit - next time asked to go on early - played all their pressings etc. on original and left them with nothing to play - crowd not impressed with duplication later on. Got the message though - a lot more circumspect after that. Just played even worse shit for a while, then realised a lot of shit x a little £ still added up to a lot of £ and a lot of shit with little residual value - predictable hey, so had an epiphany and started collecting proper stuff albeit slowly - job done !! The other thing you will notice is that the play-list purveyors of these knock-offs will often disassociate themselves from the fact by immediately retiring to their record boxes and facing away from their audience because we know it is human nature for somebody to wander over to the decks for a 'real one' recce, and that avoids them seeing the 'face of scorn' that results and possible derision that follows. This conversation / problem will of course run forever whilst it is perfectly legal it appears to counterfeit / deceive without fear of sanction. Try knocking off 1000 £50 notes - on you like a ton of bricks - 1000 £1000 sounds - not interested -
Before the price guides - THE BIG BLACK BOOK
Vadnochka replied to Vadnochka's topic in All About the SOUL
The thing with Carol Fredericks - personal tastes aside is that back in the early nineties it was a seriously rare piece - most dealers had never had one - and also most people were only familiar with it if they had bought / copied the c60/90 tape from Richard Domar that carried this track and a meaningful price was a matter of conjecture but what I do know is that Mr. Chadwick paid a grand cash at the Ritz for one - although that was probably just loose change during that period of his excess and did not truly reflect the sounds value although it did reflect its rarity then. -
Some of you out there may remember back in the early 90's that I became a familiar sight at all manner of gigs around the country - from Keele to the Ritz, Wilton, 100 club, Brit, Embankment, Holy Cross and hundreds more, right up until I disappeared again in '98 having sold masses of sounds to the likes of Kenny B., Carl W., Steve C. and others - that I used to carry a large black index book which contained a fairly extensive A - Z of quality rarities and their listing source and prices asked and achieved. This became an abundant point of reference for almost all of the big ticket pieces of that era, so much so that I was continuously being asked for advice on pricing and would I copy the info contained within, only too willing to advise but too much trouble to copy and print info back then so that never happened. Well guess what - following a search for some old paint references in my loft I came across an old box in the far corner - opened it up and lo and behold - numerous old copies of Goldmine & Discoveries - unbelievable stuff on set-sale and auction from this previous incarnation of rare soul listings from the USA - a box of vinyl - I'd somehow forgotten about - OMG - and my big black book. - Absolutely fascinating reading. Listings from A-Z - Manship / Brady / Anglo / John Doe / Out-A Site / Adey P. / Boogaloo / Rob Smith / Andy Rix plus numerous other ad hoc listings from individuals - given the current frenzy about prices I thought if anyone was interested on a time line / price inflation-deflation view from an accurate document - 1993 -1998 - I'd list examples from this period over a period of weeks to try and put into perspective the current exasperation at current prices and also show from these listings just how common some of the supposedly big ticket sounds are / were ? Some examples - Jimmy James - This heart of mine - Piccadilly - £3 Volumes - ain't gonna give you up - Karen £12 Masquaraders - Do you love me baby - Wand - £50 Masquaraders - How - La Beat - £80 L. Allen - Can't we talk it over - Green Dolphin - £90 Ivorys - Please stay - Despenza - £100 Terry Goodnight - I never knew - Phelectron - £400 Tempos - I'll never forget - Diamond Jim - £400 Johnny Honeycutt - I'm coming over - Triode - £600 Carol Fredericks - I couldn't care less - Stonel - £1000 I never actually listed most of the RCA / MGM / Verve & major label rarities because they were to all intents and purposes too common and had a fixed price between £30 & £100 depending on issue / demo I'll list a few actual dealer comparisons over the weekend and see what that throws up against current variations - Anyone with a specific question / request - give me a shout via forumn Steve

Hi, Is Tokays sold Steve
-
Just a point, When did the term oldies come into use ? - My experience from collecting over 45yrs was that the sounds dropped from any medium / long term play list, regardless of location/venue were deemed PLAYED OUT - hence the long used std. brush off from DJ's - and I include myself in this - 'don't play it anymore mate - it's played out' - (not an oldie). Front line DJ's have driven the scene on since it's inception at all major venues from the late 60's onwards - All the clubs/venues had 2nd tier dj's so to speak who, primarily due to funding issues were only able to spin the 75p / £1 sounds out of Selecta / Redifusion / Moore's / Leicester market - and remember a great raft of clubs had closed before Wigan got started - that 6 month gap in 1973 - during a massive explosion in discoveries saw a great number of sounds disappear - there were very few venues back then, hence the excitement when the word went round that a new all nighter was starting up in Wigan - Where? - For F!!! sake it's bad enough getting to Blackpool - This of course kick started the numbers involved as well. With regard to the question - when do they become oldies - the answer just has to be fluid - everyone will have a different timeline / experience / knowledge and just like tastes it will be different strokes for different folks #

furys - i'm satisfied with you on - original keyman
Vadnochka replied to Jona's topic in Record Wants
Jona, Furys - I'm satisfied - not surprised this has proved elusive - always tougher to get than price reflects My 1st £5 sound - Feb. 1972 - Up the Junction - allnighter - Crewe - bought this and Art Freeman - Slipping around - UK Atlantic £10 the pair Just seemed so innocuous back then (although for a schoolboy as I was or anyone for that matter £10 was 1/2 a weeks wages and £5 was the going rate for almost all sounds ) Little did I know that I was in the process of mainlining into the worst addiction that after nearly 45yrs the irresistible urge for my vinyl fix cannot be shaken off or cured Best of luck Steve -
Terry Callier, New Holidays, Ben E. King plus more
