What’s the most you’ve paid for a record
Vadnochka replied to carl baxter's topic in Look At Your Box
@ £2000 in trades for Milton James on Dore from JM when he brought that light blue DJ copy back from LA in the mid 90's - played it out at the Griffin, Leeds. Brit, Notts. Wilton, Embankment, Wellingboro'. and other venues. Eventually succumbed to a pretty please from Maria Willingham in the later 90's - They had been interested in the 45 when John brought it home ( he only lived a few hundred yards from me ) but after playing it numerous times I took the plunge. Sold it for less than the trades value I paid but some of those trades were $5 Tangeers issue / $12 Andrea Henry issue so didn't feel so bad at the time. Never imagined the price inflation that would continue. I still believe it is a single copy sound - at the time it was undocumented in the discography of Dore. Strange one as well with a 33sec. instrumental intro before the vocal kicks in. -

You need the right missus - last week saw a Mel Williams - sweet girl of mine - Buddah - all time want - and this one not cheap - 4 figure price as expected. What was not expected was - missus stumps up the money overnight - in the box!!! - just them job. -
One of the original boots that were available at the same time as Geoff Kings Soul Sound label was getting going from Leicester market back in1971 but as to it's origin - not a clue although there is a suspicion that they all link to Geoff King in that his 'Old' soul label as a precursor to Soul Sounds and this Invitations were all done by him as well. Remember buying this off the market one Saturday morning as an impressionable 17 year old listening to the 'old hands' discussing the 'Cats' and the demise of the Night Owl and Wheel, not realising that in fairly short order I'd be following them down the A5 and on to a lifetime of vinyl addiction. Tezza, I think you know the answer - so its yes and yes Steve

Didn't know that - anybody got one / seen one / photo It would seem strange to release a British Columbia 45 when the US 45 never saw the light of day beyond what appears to be an odd (namely 1) copy escaping - my seeing this 45 demo listed back in the nineties was not an apparition and I can't see anybody listing it in a general listing without it not being in front of them to do so. So far nobody has come forward to say - I've got a copy - photo attached, or any other info about it other than the EP which has been common knowledge. I'd love to see a UK single - somebody must know / have one if it did come out over here. Over to you folks -
-
I am aware of the ep but I'm talking about the actual US Okeh 7200 7" 45
-
MAJOR LANCE - THINK NOTHING ABOUT IT - OKEH 7200 I have never seen a copy of this 1964 killer on 45 single but did see it advertised as a wlp in an edition of either Goldmine or Discoveries back in the early / mid 90's. I tried to capture this one but failed and have been after it ever since. Must of been pulled by the label for some reason - anybody got any info on this. Never seen it listed or advertised before or since as Okeh 7200 - must be the rarest 45 on the label

Ref: You left me / Professionals - Max at the Cats - Can't verify 'you left me', but defo Professionals as I was surprised when he spun it, as at that time I thought I'd got the only copy - As we find right up to the present day - someone, somewhere pretty much always got there first so to speak. back in the 90's Steve Kennedy had both of these in his collection along with loads of other massive rarities and when I went to his place in Nuneaton both were still for sale along with John & Weirdest / Paris / Fascinators and numerous others - I finished up buying 5 or 6 and spent several thousand pounds, the Professionals to replace the one sold to John Manship in 84/85 but not 'You left me' - something I regretted by the next week when Steve informed me it had gone. digressing folks - I was only talking about the invention of the myth that was Tony Turner and how and where it came about. Not some dross recording that appears on some compilation or any of the other perceived recollections of a vocal. Steve
-
Always amazed how frequently this masterpiece comes up in conversation after all this time since it was first recorded in my brother Chris Frost's bedroom back in the early / mid 70's. After considerable thought and re-working of the lyrics to reflect the story of a lonely prison cell (6x6) in the state penitentiary/ doing time away from my baby. Chris preceded to lay down the vocal into a hand held mike whilst the Earl Van Dyke instrumental played in the background, eventually creating a poor quality /muffled but unmistakeable vocal take onto a C60 cassette and a sound for the ages was created. The ingredients were all there. Artist - Tony Turner - unknown but rolled off the tongue Label - Musicor - major but with numerous northern / obscure numbers and plenty of missing numbers Song - 6 x 6 - as good a basis for an unknown vocal as you could find Only known recording - classic terrible quality sound reproduction that smacked of being recorded live at an unknown venue direct from the speakers but with that aura of authenticity that this brought to the sound. - in reality our house. The clincher was probably the provenance of the Frost brothers vinyl hound history - following on from Eddie & Ernie / Timothy Wilson / George Blackwell / Steinways / Nicky C / Natural Four and numerous others in the early 70's right up until 2018 when Chris stunned the Prestatyn faithful with Willie Hutch - Train keep on moving on a Soul City 7" vinyl promo from 1966 found in LA earlier this year ( he wrote and produced it for the 5th Dimension) - see / hear it on his youtube post from Prestatyn 2018 under Chris Frost rare soul - 50yrs and still searching - we are still relentless in our pursuit of the next big sound - they are still out there !!! Tony Turner - Legend Steve

Thanks - wasn't really concentrating on which forum I was in when posting - just come off discogs.
-
Just a query on this big ticket sound. It has always looked a bit iffy to me - I personally have never seen or observed any copy listed at less than M- / unplayed - current discogs listings in similar nick. Has anyone out there got a knackered / beat up vinyl / ring wear / rips on label or are the total number from a mint ?count box from the same source - one of the few I've never owned due to my lack of faith in their provenance and when did it first emerge to the light of day and by whom. Steve

Never an original 7" back in the day - But and it's a big but, do the Northern soul fraternity really think that this brilliant track was not immediately picked up and played upon it's release on the LP, along with Jnr. Walker's. Folks - the list of stuff attributed to 'The Torch', 'Casino', 'Cats', or 'Mecca' which in fact were regular spins in the 'provinces' before being sold or traded to the previously named clubs - usually because they were 'played out' locally is almost endless.
