The Ritz All Dayer
Hello, has any one got any memories of the All Dayers at The Ritz in Manchester that they would care to share. I'm researching a book on Manchester clubbing from the later 70's to the mid 80's and would be grateful if anyone could provide any info on the DJ's, music styles, how often they took place and so on, or indeed any info on Rafters etc in the same time scale ? Well, Like Mike ( Mr soul source) i was from North Wales and we used to all to go to the Ritz all Dayers after Wigan each month and sometimes if a bank holiday weekend; Bellevue on the Monday bank holiday. It blew me away when i first arrived for the first time in the mid 70,s it was so posh ( at the time ) wall to wall carpets and a huge sprung dance floor in the middle ( with a fence type post around in places) the record bar was at the left of the dancefloor and was different to wigan as the influx of 12,s had started.. 1st tune i heard was carwash.......... It seemed that the djs alternated with levine and curtis or Searling and sam and Pat Brady etc ....so it was all mixed up and you had to wait for Northern.sets whilst the strange people with jellybean plastic shoes and whistles danced to Dc Larue "cathedrals" and let,s all chant etc... on reflection the tunes were quite camp and i imagine very US disco. I did like a few of the tunes and it was quite a wierd fusion of people..I remember at the change over that most Jazz funkers would leave the floor and the Northern soul people would fill the floor. There were a few dodgy people there as well My mates wife had her handbag nicked at one Ritz all Dayer and i lost my coat and a few 45,s..another time. I remember seeing Tavaras there straight after they were at Wigan.....Too F###ked to remember much though at the time.... What was the pub called round the corner ? pre drinks place ,was it the oxford?. In all i have great memories about the venue until i revisited a few years ago from Aussie to see Eddie Holman and was devistated about the seedy state of the place..The downstairs toilet area was damp and flooded.but the music was great ( it was a revival night)The Ritz was truly a jewel in the crown at the time ...a pleasant chill out place after a seedy sweaty night at Wigan. Interesting new sounds which helped my tunnel vision at the time see more sides to our wonderful music heritage Pete m

British Tv & Radio Stations Archives
Anybody tried Vietnam??? TP I tried six years ago . I spent 3 weeks in Ho Chi Minh. I found the main Radio station at the time of the American occupation but it became part of the peoples republic broadcasting after the Americans fled. Most American stuff was burnt or plundered ( except Military equipment ) . I spent a good two weeks searching all around and checking out the markets that were flogging ex American Army surples ,but to no avail. I ended up buying a Lamberetta sx 200 though. My last day before flying out i saw a little kid with a us 45 in his hand scraping it down the side of a wall. I ran after him but he buggered off before i could ask him where it came from. I am sure there may be a few tunes still floating around. But unfortunatly i found nothing . I got hassled too when i inquired at the site of the old Station by goverment officials; so i gave up. Pete m ps I reckon Guam is the place to check out... still a us base ( since the 2nd world war ) happy hunting

Who Introduced You To Soul And Are They Still Around?
For me and pretty much all of my mates it was the likes of Bob Foster and co who shone the early light of soul music over the darkness of the North Wales coast. I only met him a few times but he was a ledgend to us youngsters in the mid seventies, i did manage to buy a few detroit things from his collection over the years, which filtered their way around all the locals. There are other pioneers too which i apologise for not mentioning but Bob always comes to mind firstly for me. He used to fly to detroit late 60,s and get stuff straight out of the local stores!.( so ledgend has it ) pete m

Rare Soul Pets
This is my dog Stella Named after the beer, absolutly nothing to do with this thread but any excuse to put a piture of her up cos I love her to bits. My new dog we called Stella too!!, (border collie ,aussie Kelpie cross) ... When we rescued her from the pound as a pup her name was Dusty and her sisters and brother were all named after 60,s singers, Marvin, Martha, Aretha ...etc how could i resist, but my wife not being into soul that much insisted we changed Dusty,s name so hence Stella pete m

A Soulful Send Off
Had a mate knocked off his scooter by a lorry and decapitated when he was 18. Big load of Mods at the funeral. Emotional enough as you'd expect but we generally held it together until they took the coffin away to his favourite song. Every single one of us collapsed into a blubbering mass as Long After Tonight Is All Over blared out. Still makes me fill up when I hear it. I'd like to go in to Let Me Down Easy - that should get the buggers blubbing! And on that cheerful note... I,d like Burning sensation played at my cremation as i slowly glide through the curtains . I have already briefed my wife should i go before her that i want Jimmy Mc farland - lonely lover played before Robby Lawson morbid or what pete m

An Idiot's Guide To Acetates
You're right, they are I have a 78 rpm emi recording machine which i bought in 76, and i also have blank discs . The 2nd hole was on the platter even with these ;to keep the platter in place in the cutting phase. should anyone be interested in obtaining a 78 rpm emi recoring machine ,complete with 10 inch and 18 (?) inch blank acetates.. ( needs a few new valves plus a cranking handle for the run out grooves) contact me off list. It Is more a museum piece than a working piece.. looks good , knobs and dials similar to a 50,s sci fi movie !!! I once cut Jimmy Mc Farland , Lester Tipton and living color on 78 rpm , before it died ! Pete Morgan

Gerri Grainger - I Go To Pieces
First to play it at Wigan was definitely Russ, followed by everyone else. Bloody awful record. Sorry made a cock up, have to agree with Pete smiths comments above, I love the tune only for the memories of Wigan.etc i woulld still put it in the same league as eg. Wilbur walton jnr etc and consider it cross over country/pop/soul sound...it has had it,s day and is a classic but there is more soulful stuff out there worthy of an airing imho.. pete mj

- Play Lists, Are They A Good Thing?
. Generally I like seeing playlists, not just from venues in Britain but also from around the world. I like to see what our continental soul brothers and sisters rate as tunes to play out. Jordi Couldn,t agree more , being stuck out in the outerhebrides of the soul "pulse "It is crucial for us expat soulies to still have a pulse on the Eouropean scene. It helps to know when to brush of the cobwebs from your forgotten stuff and move them with adolation and praise to your dj box ( when it gets a play) Keep it coming!!! Pete m- Weather Songs
Seeing as I was "Ski-ing in the snow" this morning just thought bit fun with weather related songs, please add. "Ski-ing in the snow" "Ice Man" "Stormy" A few to get us going. Show off skiing in the snow !! we have had a heatwave for weeks and i was missing Wales so last spot i played Na Allen - Everytime it rains mixed in with the 12" Eddie Kendricks - Date with the rain... cooled me down and made me feel at home :-) pete m- Divorces And The Split Up Of 30 Year Old Collections
Your right, I would say surely in a divorce everything is split 50/50 ? That sounds fair to me. I have to agree with this, with my seperation; we amically decided to split all our cd,s and non northern 50/50 ie mine , yours mine yours etc........secret was to premtive it and sort them out prior to what you want and then go through the process of one for you and one for me... that way i got what i wanted... i did the same with the northern and lost all my scratched and re issued tunes..but then again i,m a devious welshman :-) 6 years later she asked if i wanted to buy them back..... i did and at a very reasonable price... It is a horrible time and wouldn,t wish it on anyone.. good luck pete m- Is This The Future ?
wouldn,t fancy cueing up the records in a hostile laser enviroment though ! It could also have repercussions on ones reproductive organs...- This Weekends Playlists
