If he doesn't want to be a tosser and please others, then the answer is simple: Buy what you love! If I ever had the misfortune of having to rebuild my collection and had a certain amount to do it with, then I'd write a list of all my favourites in order and start at the top until you hit about 150% of the value. Chances are, you won't buy all your records quick (unless you're prepared to pay too much) and you may not find some for years, so have a few in reserve. Plus it might be nice to earn some interest while you wait and enjoy the hunt Walking in with a fist full of cash and getting all you want, cheapens it a bit - coz part of the emotional tie with my vinyl comes from the pain of saving for it and not letting many get away m

Reminds me of skanking (rude boys) meets 20's/30's Lindy Hop or Charleston dance I must admit, I admire anyone with coordination and energy (coz I have neither) and hope it catches on just to get kids exercising and fit. m

Ooops, excuse me George (and all). I only read your header which said "NS" (Northern Soul). I didn't realise you actually meant "rare soul" as you state above in your first post. So ignore my last post, because I can't really have an opinion about 'rare soul' as I have no idea how many rare sounds the Americans still have m ps. don't go upsetting the British - I've gotta live here!

I've been to numerous soul nights in many countries and must admit that outside the UK and for what I've experienced, the Germans are high up there (imho) for the depth of their DJ's boxes and locations around their country - plus Marc's 17th anniversary soul night in Berlin this year must be the icing on their cake Must say, I'm bemused with previous posts that name other countries in support of their soul scene - but then also name UK DJ's who play there as evidence IMHO, the UK is in no danger of losing it's focus (if they even care ) due to the numbers and locations of NS nights in the UK - BUT even more so, what the uk also has is the fact that others (and themselves) follow certain DJ's or sounds that have been "played" on the NORTHERN SOUL SCENE in ..........the uk! It reminds me how it used to frustrate us Aussies how the English there, would generally only play tunes once (or because) they became (or were) "played" on the uk scene - and I've seen it since in Europe too - althought obviously the idea of 'breaking' a sound has caught on a bit more everywhere, well since the soul internet lists grew with guidelines on DJing ) BUT Quite frankly - I don't want aaaaaaanywhere to be the headquarters of Northern Soul, - because by having a HQ, we're also saying that NS is something like a corporation (time to duck politics again, eh? ) - instead of being just 1 to 3 nights a week out for some (hopefully good) soul music. m

know what you mean But mine were an accident, as I was trying to load some old favourites in the MP3 player of my phone and they landed in ringtones file instead . Before that, I always found ringtones annoying, especially at work - and I never wanted to be one of "those people" Now I tend to prefer these two on mine: - still my alltime favourite sound: TRY-EULA COOPER or - a great powerful starter: BEAUTIFUL HEAVEN-SHADOWS I still feel like a bit of a goose when someone rings me on my personal mobile, but surely it's just good character building m

Whilst JT Rhythm was popping up now-and-then on eBay some time ago (so I would have got it if I wanted it - one went for a damn good price too!), I was desperate for the Mark-keys version ...and made Sam sell me his. I really like it when I want something others don't, especially when it's really hard to get! m

Steve's a close mate of my husband and travels to soul do's with us sometimes - including that night. You're right, he's a nice guy. I'll let him know about your post and I'm sure young Natalie appreciates your kindness too. m

Feed: Kent 25 Years! A Special One Off Event - 19 Oct 2007
Maria O replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
Great! I saw the flyer posted up on the weekend (think you've just added another copy in the gallery) and stuck it right in the diary. Worth taking the day off work for this and travelling down early. I bought my first Kent LP's in Australia, while I was still at school ...and they ruined my life! Maxine ....ooo, I'm so excited!!! m -

Whats Your Most Sick Of Hearing Or Hated! Overplayed Oldie
Maria O replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
oi you cheeky sod... I haven't even posted that on list yet (still waiting for Andy's sets) ..and besides, that's two of Sam's playlists from our website that you've merged so he does not play it in every spot m ps. I'm still president of the "ban Joe Jama" club -
Normally I find ebay a private thing and would not send up a link or discuss it on list. However, I just wondered how many people have sent the guy $2,000 who was advertising another mint copy of the above record. It has now been removed off ebay -> It bore such a similar resemblance to the ebay auction mentioned above (pictures of both sides were exactly the same, description same, heading exactly the same...) and you could not even see the counter number, so you were obviously the first in . The guy had the record listed for auction $1, but if you agreed to his bidding rules after you emailed him, you could buy a mint copy for only $2,000. The seller was RAZMOCHA (feedback 658) Got all this info down whilst typing this, then refreshed the page and it disapeared after being removed! Thought all my Christmases had come at once, until my CSI head firstly noticed that it only had two days to run (been away, so only saw it), then then rest followed. However, I'll kick myself if somebody posts up that they got this copy If link doesn't work, it was item 270154515938: This listing (270154515938) has been removed or is no longer available. m

My knees aren't the best and never liked having records on 'show' so I had a bespoke cabinet made for most of my 45s. A mate came across a guy who made them for a record company back home. It was deep because it had draws that fit in instead of records single stacked across in shallow shelves, so the quantity looked much less too. The best bit was that each draw came out and you could sit on a chair and comfortably put it on your lap near the player. Or sit on a lounge and flick through in comfort. The cabinet looked nothing like a record store with the right varnish and handles, so visiting friends and family didn't think you were "weird" (as my cousin said when I accidently left some draws open one day). Also, these cabinets are so sturdy that 2 people struggle to lift each carcass and the draws are 20mm MDF . Since the move here, I use a mix of boxes stacked away. For me, I don't use my records often here, so they don't need to be handy. There's record dj boxes, a cheap pine blanket box with carboard boxes for 25 or 50 45's stacked inside, but I also bought some great plastic 45 storage boxes from the USA - >CLICK HERE<. They're a real b** to put together, but worth it. The smaller ones might even work well on open shelves with a cover over for privacy Thing is, you need to think how you'll use them and how often you want to dust them... and then there's the other consideration: how much you want to spend m

- and also one of the kindest and loveliest people I have ever met and spent time with (and I don't give out many compliments). Even before that, it's MAXINE a million times over for me. It's her voice that does it to me. I wish I could have chosen some of her material, as her passionate voice was never fully exploited due to her incredible sensuality some say, but maybe also because she was categorised for commercial appeal. My personal fav tracks from her recordings are: "Don't Leave Me Baby" and "It's Torture" ...but that woman could make me turn when she starts singing "I'm the kind of girl who likes to take it, s-l-o-w a-n-d e-a-s-y..." and don't even get me started on "Let Me Give You My Lovin'" I jumped on a plane from Sydney to see her in Cleethorpes a few years ago. It was a mind-blowing week away, so emotional. Can't wait for her to return to the UK some very special day. m

Most of us Aussies don't remember ANYTHING after a few beers I went to soul nights in my home Oz city from 1985 til I left 3 years ago, and our lot all know of her and that track. It got plays - think I even may have this somewhere in my boxes back there. Thing is, there's far better sounds from other artists (IMHO) that one may rather chase and play. It's nice to have national pride - like when we win the cricket - but it's not like I ever wanna watch that boring game. Those that were teenagers in the 60s were the only 'normal' people who I recall had heard of her and loved her, but it's been a very long time since I asked. m

Asked Soul Sam sitting here with me and he said: Lionel Davis 'A woman can make or break a man' and on a red label called "Love" m

It's EXCELLENT - wish I had talent like that. Would love to support our mate Trev at the September one but will be dancing/listening in Berlin that night. m

Yes, that's true. I set up ebay accounts both in the UK and Australia ...and I still use an Oz one sometimes. Also, I tried to sell a heavy item once and when the guy from France got the postage price (and a link to the Australia Post website to confirm this), he politely asked if he could retract his offer. We then just left good feedback for eachother Pete, email the guy and explain your case, offerring him the option to get out if he's made a mistake. Not everyone out there is a nutter and if he's not planning to get it sent to a UK address, he's probably brickin' it too m

So why do you go there? (I'm so fussy with my morning brew, that I tend to travel with my coffee & cafetiere if there's any chance of not being in the vicinity of a espresso machine in the morning ) The concept might really appeal to someone who is seeking to set up such a business, but it is difficult to trust all the right ingredients are there to invest in (like great food & coffee ...or whatever the market in the area 'wants' - if it wants it at all). I think Scooter clubs hang out at the same bars and eateries more than soul communities do. ...But I could be wrong and good luck to anyone who tries . m

You are probably better off asking in the Events - European section. I only know Lionel there; a soulie from Paris who you may find under the MEMBERS section or I can put you in touch if you PM me. (Their big annual allniter usually clashes with Prestatyn, but hopefully not next year.) m

I'm afraid he is not interested in being a resident DJ in the uk. I expected he would say 'yes' for a residency at Thorne, but can only get him as a regular guest dj there ...at every one I hope Thanks for the plug MO! Check out our playlists from the website link in my footer, if you want to confirm that he's not a modern soul dj - coz I refuse to be his groupie (nuff said). m ps. I hate the whole dj obsession over here and would rather applaud the artists and records. However, I can understand how one would travel when a certain DJ is on, because it's their sounds they are really following. (My current fav uk dj is Dave Ripolles )

Actually, it's probably our fault. Martin & family spent the weekend with Arthur & myself in Yorks AND you know how the southern lot get dizzy north of Watford You couldn't meet a more honest guy folks, but never click on any such link (from your bank, ebay etc) just in case the next such email comes from a dubious source. m ps. anniv card arrived today - thank you!

I'm absolutely gutted reading all this ...'coz we had Soul Sam sleeping at ours the last two nights - and I've just thrown the sheets in the wash m ps. nice to see someone brave enough to show how ridiculous this scene can get - even if it is Mick

I thought it was in England! ...I can add yet another country to my 'places I've played' I've been through the smoking ban years ago in Australia. I think I've said it before, but basically - people will pop outside lots at first. After a while, many quite because it gets so annoying to leave the table at a restaurant, etc. Early on, venues will risk losing people to the outside (it was dreadful at one particular venue), but real soulies always chose the venue over the social group that collects outside. If you are worried, then make sure that you can't hear the music outside, so they don't stay out there In anticipation of this new law, we made our next do in Thorne a daytime and night event. We will do our very best to get sounds pumping outside during the day. This gives the smokers a chance to feel 'normal' again. Hoepfully, the weather and equipment will fall into place on the day. Personally, I'm gagging for the new law . My asthma struggled again, when I moved over here. m

Must admit, I agree it's tedious - but don't mind it as much after a few hundred listens . It's the sort of record I'd love to find cheap and sell on gladly for lots of dosh ...even though I've only bothered to sell one or two records ever from my many boxes (which include doubles and turned-off discs ). My other half rates this highly (and plays the lesser known side out), but I've yet to come across a female who likes it. I'm interested to see if any females on here can contradict this??? m ps. sorry, but please don't request sound files - what's his is his (in my book)
