In the main room at the Prestayn Weekender recently, I took some short videos of the live acts with my camera. The aim was to keep for these myself and share with some friends in Oz who couldn't be there, but then it felt right to share with others who loved the experience too or missed out. But of a shame the auphoria was spoilt when it was posted in the media section > CLICK HERE FOR LINK < But now... A guy on another soul list mentioned that he had passed my You-Tube link of his song to Swamp Dogg, who said he was impressed (how kind was that!) and had asked if anybody had videoed the whole performance. Then yesterday, I was contacted via You-Tube by a a guy claiming to be Sammy Campbell's son (Frank) who had seen the Del Larks/ Sammy Campbell You-Tube videos and would love a dvd of the performance if possible. I just wondered if anybody knows any of the people who were taking proper videos. There were at least a couple I noticed, but I don't know most people anyway and have no idea who they were. It would be great to give something back and arrange for the artists to have a copy of their performance . m

Pete dear. You can think what you want - free world and all that. But please don't bother continuing in this thread, as you won't like the rest either. I'll upload 5 more videos if that's ok with everyone else. I took a few more, but the earlier ones were taken from the stage side or next to the left speaker - so the sound or pictures were badly muffled. These videos are taken with a camera (not video), so the sound isn't as good as the night. It's hard keeping both hands up for that long so forgive a few shakes. I hope others have some more to upload. m

I got a decent new camera last month and played with the video function on Saturday night. Obviously they were a bit amateurishlingly taken, but I think the magic is still captured. Here's the first one (more to come over next few days, if anybody wants them) and I hope ohers upload theirs too. If my efforts to upload fail, then m &">

Sad news indeed. Rest in soulful peace

Nah. There was a Vent one on eBay a few months ago and I don't think it even made £300. Shocked me and I would have bought a spare if I'd dared. I finally picked mine up here on SS about two years ago, and the guy only wanted £200. Very, very kind indeed m

Doing the door was all part of putting the night on, so back home for many years I was a "door bitch" for an hour or so at every one of our events. I never minded it early as it gave me a chance to relax with a drink after the running round before doors opened and stress over "will they come" away from the others. Each person through the door, helped aleviate my concern and I smiled more and more. Hardest thing was that if we weren't on the door or decks - we used to dance every single spare moment, so after a while - sitting on the door while your feed are tapping and your body twitching becomes quite unbearable. We had a friend volunteer his services (great muscles) and one of my stunning non-soulie friends helped him sometimes because she "loved checking out the spunky guys" and having an excuse to flirt with them On to the UK ...and a short term little mid-week night in London - but it was never a problem in Walthamstow, coz that was free entry. Audra ran around meeting everyone anyway. On the first night that Karen and I started Boomerang early last year, she kept saying that she was fine to continue on the door as she was having so much fun and talking to so many people. This has continued and it was like a dream come true for me! She now thinks she's got the fun bit (door & face promo) but I know I've got the fun bit (bookings & web bits). It's like a match made in soul heaven. I sit with her on the door just to hang out now, but she scoots me away after a bit so I don't scare away the punters . I think the door person must love people and have a very happy disposition (it's no wonder that most are women) - and look like they WANT to be there. They are often the face of the soul night, more so than the dj's or the/other promoters and are an important part of the event. A nice thread!

Johan, Our night in Thorne is pretty easy to get to via car or train from Leeds. Click on the link in my footer and see if you like the playlists on our website. Don't forget the Wilton is on 21st March (join the M62 at Yorkshire post and it's only a few junctions east) I only work in the Leeds area (LS18), but these days am only in the office less than half the time. m

I've wanted this for years after hearing it of a comp - IT'S FANTASTIC! It's one of those records that makes your insides quiver. Think I've only heard it once since moving to the UK a few short years ago - pretty sure it was Butch (or maybe Keb) who played it. I could see this working at certain venues. I'd be jumping up on the floor at least m

Maria O replied to De-to's topic in Look At Your Box
Not for me. I probably paid $2 for mine in a Sydney shop, back when they were next to nothing and I wasn't fussed about giving records away (seems a hell of a long time ago now ). A good mate called Frank is a keen Oz soul collector and spotted it going through some of my records and really wanted it. Unexpectedly, he gave me a bunch of US trades back. But the real surprise came when he finally found another and gave me this record back as a gift. So this record always makes me smile and remember a kind friend m -
There's a bit about them [HERE <-click ] and the book "Doowop: The Chicago Scene" By Robert Pruter gives them space: [try cliking HERE ] and "shining armour" can be heard m

I thought C6H5CH=CH2 was Ethenylbenzene, but that PhCH=CH2 was Phenylethene but then again - I dropped Chem at school and you're the medical spark I vote for turqoise!!! (more green than blue) m

Yes, well it was my 40th birthday - so considering a lot of my records were thrown in backwards in haste, I did well under the influence of Guiness. I thought it was funny, but Karen gave me a bollocking for admitting my mistake on the mic I don't tend to like instrumentals, but one I keep meaning to throw on early doors is: Movin' On - Larry Brown & Co. It's the flip and instrumental of "Call On Me" by The Dynells on Vent - and good enough to stand on its own (imho). m

That was still there when I bought the Artie Fullilove that arrived over a week ago ...you need to be quick m

Opposite for me. Loved it when I first heard Keb play it (at least a couple of years ago now I guess) to a heaving room - and was surprised when it hit the soul scene so well, but it never had the same atmosphere. Then it got hammered everywhere I went and it started to get really, really annoying. These days, I take it or leave it... depends on what else is on, or when I last heard it. It's a shame when records get overplayed - and unfortunately that doesn't just happen on the oldies scene m

Here's a few others that you might consider (mainly from the uk): [ pack2go.co.uk ] [ Juno Records ] [ Sleeve with polythene ] [ 24-7vinyl.com ] [ vinyl-record-addiction ] m

I don't know how many times I've said this, but he's not on Soul Source. We don't share machines or such conversations, however, somebody pointed him to this and he'd like to clarify this. (and I might get a free dinner for typing this out ) ========== A few weeks before it was semi-uncovered, Arthur had arranged with Richard to buy the second copy that he'd got off John Anderson. It was £250 (huge money at the time - and even now for many). The deal was meant to take place at the Toddmorden alldayer, but Richard didn't bring it - so Arthur was sold his first covered-up copy for an agreed swap later. They then swapped it at the next Snaith alldayer, where a very excited Arthur grabbed a label off another cover-up to mask the play side of his new uncovered copy. The record finished and he had a few guys rushing up to the decks. As he held it up to them (too excited to think clearly), the guys coming up on the other side could see the unmasked flip. He felt sick when he heard "I know what it is" and realised his mistake, but he says they didn't guess the label correctly. Six months later or so circa 1980, Kev Draper got his copy - believed to also be from Soul Bowl - and played it UNCOVERED (much to their disgust at the time) at the Peterborough allniter. When Arthur sold up his Northern records about a year later, his copy went to Paul Collinson from Selby, who Arthur says had great taste. ===================

I'm not a fan, but my man is - and he had her cd on in his car this week. Just about every song had me saying "I'm surprised Motown hasn't sued them". I have a dreadful habit of hearing another record in the song that's playing and one in particular had the background of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", plus a few Supreme numbers were obvious background bits on others. I was amazed they had got away with it. Not sure about the "Northern Soul" tag though - I'm more confused than ever on what that means but agree about closing your eyes to watch the poor dear m

It's on CAT I haven't seen a reissue close up, but via a google, it looks the same cover as the original. Anyway, I've had mine long enough not to be concerned Don't know if the 12" was re-issued or how to tell, but <THIS 'original' 12" IS FOR SALE> might interest somebody (not me) - be quick! Merry Christmas , m

I only bought the LP (original) for "I Can Only Think Of You" - oh what a beautiful track! m
