Damn it Marc - I was trying hard not to be touchy feel-y in my post ...you're such a girl (but oh - you're so right ) m

Must admit that I haven't read all the comments, but I think it's manners to agree a price or such beforehand. For what it's worth, here's my feelings: Anyone that organises a soul night/allniter must know what their venue hire, equipment hire, flyer printing, website hosting, mailouts, postage, advertising, spare sylus', etc - will cost. Surely they can budget a DJ or six. . If not, let them know it's a freebie before the night runs. It's not hard to ask certain dj professionals what they charge ....and others may not set a price but you're best telling them what you'll pay (if anything). Some nights make money, then you lose money on other nights through no fault of the guest djs (even when people attending think it went well) - so be prepared to have your wallet handy! Overall, it's human nature that you won't be disappointed if you know what you're getting beforehand, so why not agree or offer a price beforehand? DJ's are people after all - treat them with respect instead of as some booking agent. It helps if you know what they play and trully want them there because you love their taste, rather than treating them like a machine or some hero. Everyone knows that the soul scene doesn't receive the same income as some dj scenes, else they'd be charging thousands for the night and dj'ing as a career. ...Believe in what you do, but be sensible and organised. Life's too short - otherwise spend it on the dancefloor instead m

Whats On.. Tonight? Chelmsford/ London Etc
Maria O replied to Little-stevie's topic in All About the SOUL
Don't know about tonight, but can help with suggestions for the rest of the weekend: SATURDAY Grab a train from London St Pancras station to Wellingborough and go to Creative Soul - [click HERE for thread] Local accomodation is listed in the thread and book the train via www.qjump.co.uk SUNDAY Head back to London and go to THE WHOLE THING ALLNITER : [ click HERE to read thread ] Hope this helps, m -
A lady came up to me at York Soul Club a while back and said how much she enjoyed me playing Baby Washington's "Tired Of Running Round In Circles". I said that it must have been the next DJ because I didn't play anything by her. The conversation went back and forth for a bit and I could tell my arguing was frustrating her, because she was so sure of herself and even knew which songs it fell between. ...It was then that it dawned on me what it was and that it might have been covered up, so I quickly checked nearby and then said back to her: " I'm so sorry - I'm foreign, so I only know my records by their real names" . (She didn't seem to believe me when I explained, so I grabbed an English man to confirm what it was called.) ....Anyway, it made me laugh. Each to their own, but I'm not a big fan of changing pitch, although I have dabbled. Even a bit feels like you may as well put it on your computer and make a remix. It's almost like cheating to make a record liked more -playbox desperation perhaps? ...besides, there's something pure about playing a record the way it was intended. m

Was just thinking the same thing . Can't tell you how I felt this morning upon seeing Soul Sam's legs come down the stairs and ending with his skimpy knickers - just as I was having breakfast (I don't think he realised anyone was up yet) I think you won't have a problem getting anyone to say "yes" to this - it's all for charity after all. Therefore, may I suggest you ask for nominations in this thread for the next week or two, then start a poll with the finalists. Those with the most votes are the most likely to sell out - and raise the most for charity AND ...don't forget that you have a close friend who has been known to take a decent photo or two Just make sure you capture him crutchless m

Most printers have a maximum number paper weight that it can print and you should keep to that (measured in grams per square metre or gsm for short). You a lucky to get a decent thick cardboard allowance for most printers and record sleeves are usually double that or more at the egding. Forcing anything higher than the recommended weight through could be damaging your rollers and jam your printer ....possibly even burn out the motor(?). The sticky label versions in A4 sheets are the best and it allows you to type them straight into a database, and print as a merge file (in Word or Excel is most common). Further to the ones mentioned above, there are some great clear/TRANPARENT labels (the best) and COLOURED labels available out there. If you google such words, you'll find loads more quite cheap online. Personally, I prefer to lift the record and glance at the record label to see what it is, rather than stick a typed piece on the cover. But the databse thing is useful as I hate typing something I'm reading and this way you only do it once, allowing a playlist to be done in a couple of minutes (with Excel's sort function). m

Don't you mean: soul music LIKED by white people? Can't remember the definition I used to use back home, but it definitely started with "Well... you wouldn't like it, but...." and it used to end with "...but you wouldn't like it." These days, I prefer listening to soul music anyway m

As we said since you wrote this, it was almost a pleasure to give Oz bits to Frank Driscoll - who was such a gem and collected what many (including those born there like myself), were not fussed about. He always gave you a trade equally as good or better, even if you said not to. I was never one for oz releases and thought I had left any I had back at my mums, but found a few whilst digging through my boxes here properly recently. The golf is on AGAIN tonight , so I'm bored enough to type them out (in case anyone is interested in knowing). Apologies if they have already been mentioned. Obviously nothing rare - just odd bits I picked up - and now I guess have sentimental value : Dusty Spingfield - What's It Gonna Be - (Phillips) - found 2 of these Since I Found You - Maxine Brown (Phillips) The Jive Five - Crying Like A Baby (CBS) 5th Dimension - Train, Keep On Movin' (Liberty) Jackie Wilson - I'm The One To Do It (Coral) Miss DD Phillips - Hey Little Girl (Festival) The O'kaysions - Girl Watcher (Stateside) Jackie Wilson - A Woman, A Lover, A friend (Brunswick) Wigan's Ovation - Skiing In The Snow (Interfusion) - errr, a joke gift I will turn into a kitchen clock one day! Natural Four - Can This Be Real (Buddah) JJ Williams - Love Market (Polydor) Al Wilson - Now I Know What Love Is (Liberty) Dee Dee Warwick - Funny How We Change Places (Private Stock) - possibly picked up at yours Ady, if red wine serves me correctly? The Mirettes - Ain't You Trying To Cross Over (MCA) Walter Jackson - It's All Over (CBS) James Walsh Gypsy band - Cuz It's you, Girl (RCA) Gene Chandler - There Was A Time (Coral) Linda Jones - What've I Done (To make You Mad) (Warner Bros.) ....you get the gist m

Magnetics, This Is How It Should Be Done
Maria O replied to Dave Thorley's topic in Look At Your Box
I heard it was 2 members. Chalky - my you-tube account (link via our website) has a few bits captured, but have one or two more to upload tonight, as they take forever. Others will add theirs this week I suspect and the search facility will help you find them. m -
Just checked and Don still has a current affiliation with BMI, and is down as songwriter/composer for this track. So I guess they would have to give him royalties? - else he can come after them m

Ta - it keeps me off the streets Looks like I better post up my next want in 2020 ...it's not always fun being right all the time m

Pete, Don't think it would be manners to do a carver, even though it is unissued. I got my access from Rob Thomas. Although I could get my hands on the odd unissued thing if I wanted to be naughty, this was the first time I've been 'allowed' to have anything (along with Esther Grant), sometime last year - the look on Rob's face when I gave him a big kiss for this.... priceless! m Marjorie Singletree - Never Let Go (Unissued)

Was talking to a mate last night about posting up wants. Joined my first soul forum 11 years ago and can't remember ever trying record buying this way. Doubt I'll get a bite, as my tastes aren't what most like, but here goes: RON LEWIS - BACKED AGAINST THE WALL (WONDERFUL) Bet you'll prove me right, but hope not. PM's appreciated m

I've not been reading most of this thread, as record-owning history isn't as close to my foreiign heart So, not sure what's been written. But Sam thinks his copy went to Johnathan, then Kev Roberts, then Tim Brown. I'm sure someone will post up, if they remember other/s involved between. m
-
Just played this to Sam to see his reaction and he could NOT understand why he played Frank Wilson after announcing Otis Clark He definitely owned a real one, but there were so many records, so many coverup names - priceless! ...and he's a man who lives for today and tomorrow, not for yesterday m
-
oooo..... me hears there were more than one for that swap - Finally someone's got him tempted to join SS and write back on something he disagrees with (peace at last ...unless mike rejects him ) m
-
I was going to say: the frequent NEGATIVITY (unfortunately, it rubs off) ...but then your post spoke to me, coz that's real sadness m
-
don't bother sending him to Boomerang ...it will only confuse him! m

Ya beat me to the punch Obviously, if times are tough, we may all be forced to sell our assets. Our records are assets - let's face it. Depending on future desperation and how happy they make us compared to what else we could give up first - will make the decision for us. I think some are trying to justify the reason they buy vinyl - and most do it simply for enjoyment and/or the vinyl disease. The topic related to those who purely buy as an investment (ie. their pension). I guess some could dabble by buying vinyl and storing them away for a future sale - but I can't see it occuring purely for that unemotional reason. Buying the odd gold or silver ignot or dabbling on the stock market would make more sense to me. I'm very emotionally attached to my vinyl and can't seem to ever let things go. (It really bothered me recently, when I finally sold one of my spares to Sam, but he's a good nagger and caught me in a xmas moment.) But at the same time, I must admit that having bought some vinyl over the years gives me greater comfort for my old age than if I'd spent the same on a shoe or dress collection. Nobody knows what's around the corner. ...Good thing is - if I keep going like this, I probably won't live long enough to ever need to make the choice m

I was just thinking "NO WAY" to attending a weekly do in the same venue, but remember I did do it in the late 80s. The difference was that I danced all night back then, so where I was didn't matter - and it was the only soul venue in the whole big city anyway. Nothing was on in the rural areas either, unlike in the UK. ...The irony is, that the guy who started this thread - used to run it . m
