If you do a word search in the forum, you will probably find other threads on the subject and realise there is a bit of a debate on the definition. For me, it means a crossing over of styles (soul meets another) and most likely to be a late 60s to early 70s track. But I am sure others will disagree on that and whether a named song even falls into the category. One person's "crossover" can be another person's "70's modern" or just "disco funk" - and I've even heard what I'd simply call "60s soul", described as crossover. One thing's for sure IMHO, depending on where you're personally at with your soul tastes and recording years, seems to influence opinion. Also, various "crossover" (aka "xover") compilations were put out which may help you gain your own understanding- google the Kent and Goldmine LP's/CD catalogues and look for these, for a start. Also, the audio section would likely have crossover forum threads running where people nominate their tunes (and you can listen via youtube links or refosoul I'm assuming). These forums can be a bit of a bitch at times, so hope the above helps in your quest. m

She hailed from America, but came from Jamaican parents (not sure where she was born, I thought Jamaica), then she moved to Oz in the early 70s and been a pop queen there on and off ever since. Her daugher Deni sings as well and has her own following as you know, also gorgeous from what I recall. Lots of soul stuff released on Oz labels or American imports or even 'dumped' there. All those decades ago, I understand from my history classes that we were still lapping up what the rest of the Commonwealth and USA etc were up to, plus heavy numbers of immigration brought even more such imports ... so between that and due to distances between cities, it's not really that surprising that 'retro' still exists from the golden days. Something that knocked me for 6 the moment I heard it and died inside to know it was so hard to get (even before the years flew by). Something I've chased hardest to find the artist, but the only time not just to say 'thanks' for. Something that never ever fails to tear me up inside - every single time I hear it, even though I can't quite put my finger on why. Just make sure it fits the dimensions of the steel frame Easyjet ask you to insert your bag in - and chances are they'll ask you to do it after you've queued an hour to try get a good seat and make you take all your purchases out on the floor as people pass by while getting on, then ask you to ut in in the frame, then ask you to do again but flip the box of records for the position they want it to be, and then squeeze the now emptier bag down in all corners to see how snug it fits. After it passes inspection, try and hoist it all compacted out of the frame ...gently. By now you're nearly the last on and struggling to find any overhead cabin space for your records before someone tells you to put it in the hold. The worse can happen, but most times it's not a problem. Usually there's no problem if you research the size and weight allowance for every flight. They will often separate your bag in the security x-ray screening and when they ask you to open it, be clear they are old vinyl records and that they are "extremely fragile collector pieces". The reason they try and snap them is that drugs have been turned into plates and smuggled in this way, with a journalist embarrasing airline security for not picking it up. Most times they only ask you to show them a few, whilst others want to touch them. Carrying them in heavy duty cardboard boxes is great when you want to take more and the heavy dj box can go in the hold luggage if you want one for use. I've found the odd holdall with wheels, within dimensions and which opens wide to take a 150 solid box > real handy gems if overall weight meets allowance. Another option is to bring a mate and ask them to carry a some records. Back home we used to have to fly each time we wanted to attend a soul night outside or own city (else a minimum 21 hour return drive), so got used to knowing what to do. Just do your research and don't panic or look nervous on the day, else the record box weight won't be your problem - it may be Bob and his rubber glove. Have fun! m

I'm really disappointed this thread deteriorated and am less inclined to post because I just don;t have the energy to debate much these days. However, I agree with Chalky as I have heard a few Euro promoters actually say they have no interest in appealing to Brits or too many Brits, mainly because they want to nurture their own (often young) scene, just don't need the numbers or see England as another world away (far removed or disinterested) - which would explain why few make an effort to push their event on ss. Outside the UK, there is also a distinction between those events run by Brits and those by the real locals (...given my long history back home, it's no secret where my loyalties lie there). Plus Rimini did suffer some undeserving grief a few years back after many of us (Brits included) fought against those travelling over and trying to take it over from the Italians. It taught other observers from Europe a valuable lesson, but thankfully the weekender is about to celebrate its 10th year, recovering well with numbers and exciting dj lineps. As Edu and Pete have said, the friendships we form in Europe are key to the network. You get to know what people like and most always take an interest and discuss various events. ...And no, I am not pertaining to be an expert - merely an observer with forming views based on my experiences Mr Rimmer, Poor you for asking an innocent question and think we've both seen this issue raised before and intiatives suggested. For some Euro events, it's not so easy to advertise early either because the venue gives them little notice like month-by-month and some struggle writing on English speaking forums as well or prefer to use their local networks. Word of mouth from those who've been over or played there and the ss flyer gallery helps, but we hear about most events by chatting to people when we're over, sometimes when events are only at concept or planning stage. Facebook connections have also made news feeds easier. Oh, and you're a lightweight if you've only attended about 20 I do however wish Mike could add the country in the forum headings (say on the right), so it would be easier to scroll through each event by location. But the poor man's had more than enough to do here. m ps. Mr Cato, Sam left Sydney a few years ago. Alex or George would've run most soul/NS events there over the past decades but last I heard, a Brit was doing them.

Musical highlights for me were Friday night at the Lifeline special, the 'wow' live acts extravaganza (especially Jesse James and the Volumes/Magnetics), the Willinghams' room and the Queen Vic 70's afternoons. Met up with a couple of close friends I hadn't seen in ages and many others who regularly put up with my hypo mouth once it touches alcohol. There were also a few surreal moments over the weekend, but best put that down to lack of sleep. Many thanks to all those involved in organising and giving it their all (must be so hard trying to make everyone happy), plus all those playing their sounds from the heart. Casualty of the weekend was leaving my wok behind in the kitchen cupboard and the one person who felt very unwell after my cooking (yes, only the one this time! ) For those that missed out because March 7-13 was National Sleep Awareness week, rest assured that Prestatyn 2012 was announced as going ahead. I can't wait to hear which live acts they will bring over for that! m

I can vouch for this. I think you got that tape in the 80s? After it broke you simply sang it to every soulie who visited from Britain year after year after year, but nobody knew it. It drove us nuts and we'd all decided it didn't exist and you'd invented it after forgetting the real tune. But then at the Prestatyn Weekender in early 2005, that tune started going round in my head (but better than I remember it girl ), my stomach suddenly fell to the floor then bounced off the ceiling ...and there was Mr Dave Ripolles on the decks - first time I heard him play - and first time I heard that song properly. It was virtually the first afternoon session, so only a handful in the room. Poor Dave suddenly had a wild Australian woman bolting towards him and screaming 'oh my gawd - it does exist...it does exist'. Instead of calling security, he handed me the record so I could write down all the words and email them off. To add to his uniqueness, the man modestly said that his brother Jordi had one too (as if it was no big deal). For the icing on the cake, after I heard it and realised how seriously good it was, Dave surprised me with a cd in the post. It's just one of the many good sounds he plays ...and I'm not just saying that because he's guesting at the next Boomerang First heard butch play his copy at the 2009 Bamberg weekender, but who knows when he picked it up. m ps. It seems The Soulgirl Karen has already grasped this after reading your post, that if Lazari is planning to develop his company into listed company, surely public relations count for a hell of a lot? These days, major corporations are increasingly answerable to society (e.g. the development of corporate social responsibility initiatives, charity alignment and bending to major protests on work practices, pollution, etc) so letting the parties know how a lot of people feel right now, could just work. But only if numbers are seriously great enough. Both Lazari and the council would therefore benefit from being reminded of how many people this club matters to. It seems the ideal solution would be that it then "made sense" to him to sell the building at a reasonable cost to a share investment group of 100 Club supporters. That way, instead of donating money to keep things going a little bit longer, people who want to give money can invest it there instead. Can't see the government pitching in for history in its next spending review, but perhaps the council might ease off its rates, if a special cultural/historical listing was possible after MAJOR public support. And yes, I think I read recently that Oxford Street is one of the most expensive fashion strips in the world, so no surprise about the rent being so high there and that any "reasonable price" to buy the building would be a frightening sum. Time to ask the experts. My thoughts are merely speculative and my free time to research further is limited these days. m

I bought that LP and an earlier one or two before I attended my first mod/soul night in Sydney on Xmas Eve 1985 ...and I was 17 too. Kent LPs ruined my life! Back then in Oz, there were lots of known records I had no other chance of first hearing, but the previously unissued "It's Torture" would get my no. 1 vote because it totally blew me away. m

At my last local do before moving to the other side of the planet, I was understandably a little tired and emotional on the decks and throwing records about a bit (actually, a lot). My friend found my Nicky Newarkers down behind a speaker after she'd dropped down to grab her handbag where she'd hidden it. She'd admitted that for a split second it actually crossed her mind whether she should say anything, but the guilt was suddenly overwhealming. At that moment I wasn't bothered, but after that, every now and then I get into a panic when I swear a certain record has disappeared. It takes forever, but 3rd to 6th time you look - it's back there!

It came out on foreign 45's too - def on a blue label Phillips from New Zealand. Think I also finally picked it up on a black label (from Sth Africa?). m
