  1. Think the pianist was Chip Crawford who has played with Gregory for a few years now. He is a mighty fine player. Gregory is just class.
  2. The Temptations My Girl. It is a flawless masterpiece, great song and great lead vocal (natch). But that arrangement! The way vocal harmonies, horns and strings combine is a work of genius particularly during the final verse and the exultant choruses.. It is recording that never fails to cheer me up and always seems to provide new delights every time I hear it.
  3. Excellent. Looks like another bullseye from those wonderful people at Kent. My order's in.
  4. Just fabulous. Proper instruments and those horns. Williams still in great voice.
  5. Really enjoy the jazz-soul from the 60's. People like Jimmy McGriff, Richard Groove Holmes, Fats Theus, Hank Crawford, Leon Spencer, Boogaloo Joe Jones and Reuben Wilson are top notch. Not too sure about jazz-funk, which got terribly bland as the 70's wore on.
  6. Where to start? An extraordinary catalogue spanning 50 + years. Love pretty much everything they've recorded, bar some of the MOR covers and Christmas novelties. Many will rightly highlight the golden years 64-69 with Ruffin, Williams and Kendricks in majestic voice, but I do like the later stuff featuring the fantastic voice of Ali Ollie Woodson.
  7. Another day, another sad passing....I guess its inevitable but still disappointing. CL was a great singer, who really deserved wider appreciation and success.
  8. Wow! That is just terrific. great drive, energy and a full on vocal. Very much my cup of tea.
  9. The guy looked a bit glassy eyed from the off. Over indulgence in the green room seems the most likely explanation for his departure. Joe Pope had a great voice.
  10. Another sad passing. Played drums on Rescue Me and with Ramsey Lewis for a while. His writing and producing for EWF and others was very high quality. EWF were a cracking live act.
  11. I do like the Jimmy Delphs tracks. Incredible to think that sides of this quality didnt get released when they were recorded. Just how many more undiscovered gems are there?
  12. I'm of the view that any exposure to classic soul music is a good thing in whatever format it is presented. It's the music that really matters to me. Vinyl will always be king and I appreciate that many think this is sacrosanct but I don't see an issue with listening to music in a digital format. I'm sure we all have CD's or downloads that we enjoy, so the idea that a night out is somehow irretrievably compromised by not having actual records seems a bit odd to me. Lets just enjoy the music we have and find ways to share it with as many people as possible.
  13. He's terrific, isnt he? Plenty more clips on youtube.
  14. Another huge talent passes. Sadly underrated artist who deserved far greater recognition. Nice piece from John Ridley's incomparable Sir Shambling site here https://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/R/clarence_reid/index.php
  15. Oh sod it! We've had a horrible couple of years with so many of our favourites passing. Otis was a hero of mine, and I'm sure many others, who made consistently strong, soulful music for over 50 years. He was a real Soul man whose marvellous catalogue should be treasured.
  16. Good on yer, Lee. Ballsy move to put up your songs for review! They sound pretty decent to me. There's enormous satisfaction in creating your own music. I reckon anyone who does it deserves encouragement and a big pat on the back so just keep working at it. Best of luck.
  17. Wonderful performance from Paul. The studio version is pretty darn good too. Simply a great singer at a time when there were so many of them.
  18. Tip top track list Scott. I'm sure the show will be a belter. Just have to say thanks for the terrific Allen Toussaint shows. A great selection of the man's music.
  19. Candi Staton, Shirley Brown, Mavis Staples, Ann Peebles, Millie Jackson, Jackie Moore, Lyn White, Dorothy Moore, Cissy Houston, Denise Lasalle, Tina Turner, Ella Washington, Betty Wright, Valerie Simpson, Barbara Mason and Debbie Taylor are still with us I think. There's plenty more that came and went that I couldnt say were still alive like Shirley Wahls, Fontella Bass, Veda Brown, Alice Clark, Brenda Lee Eager, Gloria Scott, Jeannie Reynolds and Gwen McCrae. Oh forget to add Maxine Brown and Carla Thomas
  20. Yep, the elements are all in place but those lyrics! What on earth were the writers thinking?
  21. Thats a real top drawer compilation. Even if you know all the tracks and maybe have them on vinyl or on other CD's this is still something worth having. Well done Kent for putting together another tremendous collection of outstanding and historic music.
  22. Goodness I thought he passed away years ago. Cracking singer, surprised he didnt go solo after UT. Leslie Wilson from Love, Peace & Happiness and New Birth was another terrific singer who just vanished. Of those singers still active I'd add Willie Clayton, who I think is arguably the best one around.
  23. So many have passed but of those alive I'd add Jerry Butler, Joe Simon, James Govan, Eddie Levert, Latimore, Sam Moore, LJ Reynolds, Lenny Williams and David Sea.
  24. One of the greats. We've lost so many of them over the last few years. A real shame but he leaves behind a wonderful legacy.
  25. Ace continue to do a fantastic job in getting these compilations out there. Lost without you looks to be a quality release and Georgie Fame heard them here first CD seems worthy of investigation.
