I can't remember where/who I got the info from a long time back but I was led to believe he died young of AIDS in New York at the very end of the 80's, start of the 90's, so 1990 would add up. What an immense and unique vocalist.

wtf its an out and out rock record, sounds like a copy of 'Layla'
-
agreed, but there are 2 questions aren't there? (1) why does the Rouser release share the Fairmount release number? the Rouser press used previously but unused at the time Fairmount metal plates. It cuts a lot of time and cost out of a small pressing run to not have to recut and redo metal masters. I owned the rights to a release and owned the tapes and the master plates. someone licensed it for Spain, I sent the metals, as in addition to savings, you know the cut is what you want, then they pressed and put new labels on. Pretty standard at the time, duplicating masters was also relatively economic, it's the cut and production of the 1st master that was the bigger cost. (2) was the master used legally? don't have an answer but put forward a possible scenario that may well be wrong, cheers Sutty

Well, I don't know zilch about the actual history of this record as such, but reading between the lines, it is possible that the first take made it as far as the cutting/master plate stage, and was then abandoned in favour of another non-edited take which was released on Fairmount. The rejected Fairmount plate then sat 'somewhere' unused, possibly someone took it away with them. This then found it's way to someone else, who didn't have any rights or tapes, and used that master to press up his Rouser 45's and changed the label and some details, put his own name on to pass it off as his release, but couldn't change the catalogue number as it was embedded in the metal master. cheers Sutty

You opened a paypal dispute straight away, without contacting the seller direct? That's actually a pretty harsh move if it's the first move, you should give the seller a chance to respond before starting that process. It seems both sides are agreed on the refund. If the seller has agreed to pay your return post, be polite and make the request for everything you've paid to be refunded once he gets the record back and the seller to send you the postage costs you've just spent returning. If you open or escalate a paypal dispute you are likely to lose the faith of the seller and he has no obligation in any way to refund you the return post. People are quick to jump on sellers sometimes, we're all human and we all make mistakes. I've found generally, where there is an issue with something i've bought and is not as described, the seller is very apologetic and it's all been amicably resolved. I've on very rare occasions sold something that doesn't come up to what was described, maybe I missed a mark in the light when I graded, I refund, including return post, and apologise. If i get a buyer who just wants to return the record and it's what I sold them exactly, then I accept the return and fully refund, but I will not pay return post, as i've not done anything wrong. If it's getting close to 45 days after payment and you've not had your refund, that's the time to open a paypal dispute to protect yourself. And - send the return record signed for, even if you end up out of pocket on the return post, it at least secures your actual refund. cheers Sutty

a good mate of mine bought a UK Jackie Lee issue on Pye after a going down the local boot fair straight off the train from an allnighter. Then promptly arrived round mine and slung it on the deck, "never seen one of his on Pye!" he proclaims enthusiastically, then looked very confused. It didn't sound much like what we thought it should, bit high pitched, so we tried it on 33. Nope, no good, I took it off and turned it over to check the other side. Jackie Lee - Rupert The Bear theme tune... and if the guilty party reads this, give us a bell m8 cheers Sutty

Robin Thicke V Marvin Gaye: Jack Ashford Has His Say
Sutty replied to Roburt's topic in All About the SOUL
https://youtu.be/JwFtfnUGJfg as I read earlier on another forum, and it's appropriate I think, RThicko is a repeat offender in the Marvin ripoff game, he's stolen this one from the 'I want you' album. I'm glad these neo-con bullsh*tters like him and Pharrell have had their comeuppance, not that it will make much of a dent to their vast wealth they've accrued but putting out lame music. They're the bland leading the bland. Someone asked me many years ago when they were going what i thought of Culture Club, and the same stands here. Shrug of the shoulders and 'that's like asking me what I think of a washing powder?'. Difference is, Culture Club were perhaps not quite so untalented and had some of their own ideas! It's about doing the right thing. Pharrell and Thicko didn't. Apart from that I think theyre ok cheers Sutty -
surprised he's selling a statue of a mixed-breed dog rather than a pure-bred

The Sunday Boot fair last spring in Brighton, very late getting there, everyone packing up, wander round, as I leave see a box of LPs sitting in the sun. First 6 are original Blue Notes, next lot are Plum Atlantic monos, how much? £1 each, how much for the lot '£5'. HOW had they been there for 7 hours on clear display by the exit to the car park, you actually had to walk round them to get out!
-
I got paid £25 to clear out and skip the records from a shop which was all Val Doonican, Mantovani, Bay City Rollers, etc and in the middle was a sealed JR Bailey 'Just Me'N'You' original LP on MAM. Do I win a prize?

There's a new button on Discogs where you can escalate if a seller is not responding and it sends them a message saying if they don't respond their account will be suspended, with the date they must respond by. I had someone not responding for 10 days and it worked a treat. Turned out the guy was moving home so it was all ok, but they have to respond or their account is off, so hit the button if you haven't, I think it only comes up under the bottom right of the message box in the sale if you sent the last message 'Seller not responding?' cheers Sutty

Where Are All The Bootlegs/reissues Coming From
Sutty replied to Royalpunkness's topic in All About the SOUL
Wasn't that Adidas issue with the label design, not the music content? You are more likely to be sued for artwork on than copyrighted music, the corporates are really hot on their logos. Those 'Adidas' 45s, I'd be very surprised if they're licensed in any way at all, there's a load of them out. There's tons of boots not just on juno but all over the net in all genres and have been for years, you can walk into any new record store and pick out 'reissue' look-a-like albums that are mastered from cd with scanned covers in all genres, the whole vinyl bootleg retail industry is rife (so unfair for us to single out juno). I mean look at the 'lookalike' disco 12" 'reissue' sections out there... cheers Sutty -

Dorothy Morrison - I Can't Go Without You - Konkord 12"
Sutty replied to The Tempest's topic in Look At Your Box
the sound on the 12 is absolutely shite, sounds like a super bad bootleg, AVOID! -
The Mike book came out in 2007 and is well worth getting

Thanks Jim and Cover-Up, so looks like there are 3 variations, original solid as sold in the auction and original pronged centre then what looks like a later boot with a solid centre. I have been told it was pressed up for demand, and as the 2-step and reggae scenes were a little inter-twined... The solid one I saw recently was definitely not right, looked like a JA press if anything the printing/label was poor and it was definitely worse sound quality. The auction price wasn't bad it's gone for more than that in recent years cheers Sutty
-
I was always under the impression that the Esther Byrde rough looking solid centre was a boot/2nd issue pressed on demand, and the original pronged centre is the only original? was I ill advised (I passed the info on to someone recently who had the solid centre who was disappointed, I hope I didn't let them down!). Anyone know? cheers Sutty

Funk Night On Bbc4 - Tonight (Friday 5 Dec 2014)
Sutty replied to Seano's topic in All About the SOUL
There are always useful titbits in these rockumentaries from the BBC people. I never knew that Herbie Hancock recorded with the famous Welsh trumpet player Miles Davies, or that Stevie Wonder got a synthesizer in New York in the middle-70s after he left Motown, then proceeded to use it to make a series of groundbreaking albums over the previous 5 years which were all released on Motown, as has every record he's ever made, but I guess time travelling is one of his many talents, along with releasing albums on non-Motown labels that don't exist. As always mainstream TV is an education -
I guess you know it's a Curtis Mayfield composition from 1964, original released by Gene Chandler with the Impressions on backing? If you don't, be prepared for something a bit good cheers Sutty

I know some of these northern soul records are classed as old by today's youth, but I never realised quite how far back they went https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Northern-Soul-Prehistoric-Pressings-5-Of-The-Best-Low-Start-Auction-/131343669230?pt=UK_Records&hash=item1e94b157ee
