		Help -marvin Gaye

it wasn't quite an instrumental, but it would have been better to have been one on this occasion as the vocal is dreadful on the blackbyrd lp. also check out the version by Funk Inc on fantasy which is really good, has that 3 pieces sound. cheers Sutty

		Great Deep Compilations

some time ago i picked up a bunch of second hand deep lp comps called 'soul from the vault - rare deep dynamite' - 5 volumes in all, also there are artist ones such as best of danny white, james phelps vs george freeman, best of barbara brown, best of willie hightower, the history of bobby adams, and 'the fame sound', all excellent stuff. anyone familiar with these? when did they come out and from where, no label name so they don't look like they're exactly legit. also a bizarre lp with a topless woman on the cover called 'soul sensations vol. 1' which has some great stuff on, gloria walker, winstons, lee fields, and strangely also some laurel aitken and derrick harriott. came with a bunch of lp's from a dutch guy so guessing it was a dutch release (on the soul special label). were there any other volumes? all these records feature fantastic deep sides and i have never really hardly any luck locating any of them on 45, the tracks appear to be pretty obscure. cheers Paul

		Taking Your Lovely Possesions Abroad

I assume you must be talking about general theft of items from hotels and not theft from events? I've dj'ed abroad loads of times and never felt theft was a threat, you're less likely to have your records stolen outside the UK than in it. more likely that everything will be trashed if you put the records in the hold of the plane, no matter what type of record box you use. baggage handling always find a way to destroy baggage even on the shortest flight, so make sure you take them on as hand luggage. if you are concerned about theft, speak to the promoters, there is always somewhere to lock them up safely i've found, as they usually want their records safe and sound as well, and they do go the extra mile to keep you happy usually. cheers Sutty

		Ady's E Bay Bits

The Roy Castle 45 is in demand as it's actually the Tubby Hayes Quintet, believe it was Shake Keane on trumpet not Roy. In the film you see Tubbys group playing the modal jazz track and if you're into that sort of thing then it's pretty blinding. The 45 is a different recording and if I remember it's got some godawful vocals on it. I can't believe anyone would buy the 45 on the strength of the music on it, it's got to be the Tubby collectors that are chasing it as it is very rare, I was looking for it for years until I heard it and realised it wasn't the same recording used for the film. cheers Sutty

Poll - Dionne Or Dee Dee?

no, don't let that you put you off, saw her last year - she started off the set a bit hoarse, but after about 15 mins of singing she was fantastic, highly recommended. they're both great so i can't vote, cheers Sutty

		The Supremes

different strokes for different folks and i respect your opinion, but i'm sure people would be chasing many of their 45's if they hadn't been such big hits and not saying things like this. many peoples views are tainted by the 'diana ross was a shit to florence ballard' opinion as well, which may or may not be true, it probably is. some of the b-sides are worth it on their own, 'precious little things', 'you've been so wonderful to me'. If post-Diana 'stoned love' was an unreleased acetate it would be worth £1,000's, and 'come into my life' is a great disco/rare groove record, or are we not including the mary wilson/cindy birdsong/jean terrell/susaye greene eras? they suffer from being so popular and the fact that everyone knows 'baby love' and thinks it's the epitome of soul, when it's clearly not. one of the least inspiring 'supremes' records i've had the misfortune to suffer is that awful 'back by popular demand' motorcity insipid monstrosity that got a few plays, i always thought it as strange that only that and 'stormy' (presumably because it was unreleased) ever seemed to get spun. i remember playing 'some things you never get used to' at the end of a northern do yonks ago and the place erupted, it is the funk brothers playing the music after all. mind you, most people were on their 8th pint by then, which might have had something to do with it... cheers Sutty
