there was no 12" released at the time, there has been a boot/reissue of it since. not aware of an instrumental version but as it's over 8 mins long on the lp it wouldn't be hard to play an instrumental section from half way through, or re-edit it as an instrumental. but if you;re going to chase an official instrumental 12", i don't think it exists. cheers Paul

seeing as how most soul nights have 38 dj's in 5 hours and generally any tunes played are already known, is it not easier just to take less records out with you than buy an industrial trolley? just an observation

call youself soul fans yet do not own a copy of 'songs in the key of life'?????

yes i did, the guy had about 50-60 singles in a box he'd bought in and it was the second record. he ummed and ahhed about prices and charged more for the records by artists he had heard of than those he hadn't 'i've never heard of this one before it must be rubbish, oh the detroit emeralds they were a good group i think that was a hit that's got to be at least £3', etc. bought a load of singles then went straight down the pub for the afternoon. I originally came to brighton for one summer and got a job working in an antiques shop which rapidly turned into a junk shop. when we decied to redecorate, pulled away a false wall under the window to find hundreds of records, all the usual val doonican and mantovani junk shop lp's, only to find in the middle of it all a mint copy of j r bailey 'just me'n'you' lp.

i actively make a real effort to collect non-northern records Pete so yes it is worth it i'd have thought, i can't be alone, can i?

--> QUOTE(C.B @ Nov 28 2006, 09:55 AM) link If I remember correctly, lisa jakobsson was Haluk Kilic's girlfriend or something. Haluk Kilic has ripped off one of my Japanese friends for $$$$ in records. He's another f*cking notorious hustler that people should avoid at all costs. Think he still sells on eBay, but probably changes his ID quite often. CB hmmm... thanks for the head up, i have an order sitting for him at the moment and i had a feeling something wasn't quite right. might have to be cancelled i think as i feel a possible paypal scam coming on 'oh i never got the record, etc' Paul

aren't they all bootlegs seeing as the group never existed as such and the record was released without the permission of any of the artists? and they never got paid a penny (for a change!)? i've got a copy of the jap issue i could let go of make me an offer i might not refuse (i am not looking to buy a new car with the proceeds

you're being a bit forward starting a topic with that title Dave ;-)
-
never understood, considering the number of midtempo tunes that get played, how 'wild and free' never gets any needle time
-
side 2 actually being a pedantic git. one of the greatest soul lp's of all time and if you do not own it and buy northen soul records, go out and buy it now and wonder how you ever lived without it
-
and it has 'shape your mind to die' on it as well
-
yes but what's on the cover of the german copy, the trip one has some rather nice gun-totin ladeez, nobody wants to look at a bratwurst whilst shuffling round the room. apart from backdoor kenny (luv ya really ken;-))

the sweet inspirations version is a killer

so, err, stepping outside of the northern soul scene, and bearing in mind how most younger people nowadays would prefer to download newer tracks rather than traipse all the way into town on the bus on a wet Saturday afternoon and put up with a big queue and some moody geek behind the counter of HMV who can't operate the til properly and has to call the supervisor, is it yet acceptable to use any of the newer means of music media such as laptops, ipods, etc, for djing with, on the soul scene? It is widely accepted now on other music scenes, how would people feel if they were listening ot the same music they could be hearing from new cd's and vinyl, but from a laptop for example? does it really make any difference? isn't it all still down to the selector behind his virtual decks? I am talking about legally obtained hi-kwality playback, not some microwaved version of old tracks off limewire btw. and i an NOT suggesting that people play mp3's on the northern soul scene god forbid!
-
i see this has now developed into a discussion about the northern soul scene and not the soul scene generally. why do people on the northern scene suddenly think that all discussions about new people on the soul scene are about the sixties scene, and start getting all defensive about music policies and the like? is it not possible to have a discussion about whether the soul music scene itself will survive without people attacking each other, one of the very things that is so detrimental to anyone getting interested in soul music, and the complete opposite of what it's all about? whoops just dodged another bullet
