  1. i sell on gemm every day, there are various options a seller can choose but the bottom line is, what you see as the price when you buy is what you pay plus postage and packing as stated on the sellers gemm page. gemm does take a % of the sale price directly when the item is paid for, but not of the postage and packing cost. i often mail people if i know them, they are buying something 'expensive' or multiple items to let them know its cheaper to deal with me direct. all in all, i think gemm is easy to use, works well, and the feedback from gemm if there are any problems is very quick and you get a human mailing you not a machine. very few problems with them though, or any of the buyers or sellers, much prefer to ebay myself, cheers Sutty
  2. i was even more surprised to see that 'heard it through the grapevine' came out in 1968, and 'what's going on' came out in 1967 LOL. quite what the point of those 2 pages was is beyond me, got a new distribution deal in outer mongolia maybe and trying to appeal to the local market? cheers Sutty
  3. i disagree sebastian, the single is almost mastered in mono and has changed the sound of the track, and the 45 also sounds slightly faster, maybe notched up a quartertone which is not uncommon, but it's the same recording to my ears, certainly from the 45 and lp i've owned. the drums are way back on the 45 for instance and the vocal sounds more 'intense', and the 45 is slightly 'muddier' due to the cut. i've been in cutting rooms many times and witnessed the surprising changes that can be made to a track during the mastering. cheers Sutty
  4. man up in the sky
  5. https://www.popsike.com/php/detaildatar.php...nr=300060897304 velvets made only (only!) 25,200 dollars which about £13k at the moment, not £80k?
  6. haven't got one for sale, but you may be interested to know there's an in-depth inverview with Freddie in the latest Wax Poetics mag, well worth picking up cheers Sutty
  7. it's entirely possible that the 'different mix' is just the different mastering for the lp and 45. for example, the 45's of 'midnight affair' by sandra wright and 'free' by james mason sound quite different to the lp versions, but they are not actually different mixes. a lot can me changed during a record cut, cheers Sutty
  8. outside the boundaries i know but the shortest record i ever heard was on john peel over 25 years ago, half japanese - rip my shirt to threads. 6 seconds
  9. i wasn't going to contribute as i'm not a dj anymore apart from very rarely, and even more rarely on the northern scene (like once every 10 years! ) so i'm (thankfully) not directly affected by this, but what the hell all this talk of people having to sell records to buy more expensive ones is rubbish. there are thousands of 60's and 70's records out there and if someone can't put a set together of great 60's and 70's soul at a generally low premium per record has a complete lack of imagination and ideas. the easy route is to 'upgrade' to monied records and compete with the people who already have them over time, but you're just being a wannabee and trying to get recognition by association. go out in the field and get your head in some record boxes, listen to music and make a decision yourself on what to play and it won't cost you a fortune. what makes a 'dj' think that all their audience want to hear are expensive oldies and expensive in-demanders rather than simply top quality soul music. wji've only ever met one person who actually left the dancefloor as he called a record 'cheap shit' and wouldn't dance to anything less than £100; but then again he really was a bit of an idiot and the other 200 people in the room carried on dancing. the bottom line is half of this 'upgrading' stuff is all about an ego trip and has to do with wanting everybody to luuurve you by making them dance. apart from that i'm not bothered
  10. yes as Pete said they became the real thing, you need to watch those repeats of 'wheeltappers and shunters' on cable to see the chants in action inbetween bernard manning and a bloke spinning plates on sticks (hands up who remembers that top 70's stage practice, bring it back). they also did the great 2 stepper 'i've been trying' on chipping norton. then when they were the real thing they did 'children of the ghetto' i think the kids call it a choon cheers Paul
  11. no need to get upset it was a light-hearted jibe that's all
  12. which film is this in? willie hutch 'foxy brown' and 'the mack' soundtracks are both great cheers Sutty

if you're all so smart, why is this in the wants section when it's a sales post?
  16. always preferred the vocal version by nina simone miself. for another killer billy taylor, you need the david frost and billy taylor christmas album with 'bright star in the east' - proper big band funky jazz 'i'll be right back straight after you've turned over this record...'
  17. james wayne and the soul smoothers 'i found someone' on keylan, flipside is 'my last letter'. awesome deep/mid-tempo with blazing horns and impassioned vocals. cheers Sutty
  18. he'll probably kill me, but i remember a good friend of mine (who shall remain nameless, but is on this list and will still kill me even though i haven't named him) coming back from an all nighter shall we say somewhat worse for wear, going down the local sunday market boot fair, and proudly coming round straight away with a mint british issue of a Jackie Lee 45 that he'd never heard of. I went in the kitchen and made a cup of tea, only to return into the room and he had suddenly realised he had bought a 45 that sounded nothing like the Jackie Lee that we all know, because he had just played the b-side to 'Rupert The Bear' what's that song by the verve? 'the drugs don't work'? well they did then......
  19. this wasn't even a case of 'nearly spilled my pint', i not only spilled it but almost drenched my laptop at the same time. that's the funniest thing i've seen for a long time!!!!!!!!!!

  21. i have to question what sort of state the northern soul scene in the UK has got itself into, when the price of records has to be pointed out at all on a night out. The whole idea of money dictating the content of a night out is pretty disc-gusting if you'll excuse the pun. the northern soul scene surely needs to take a look at itself and what it is really all about, it's a great scene of great music but if it's being dictated to by moneymen then more fool those that allow it to happen. just my opinion that's all. cheers Paul
  22. ok, so that last one, what are we saying then? £30? £40?... ok, well I guess with inflation as it is we'll call it £38. Ok, divide that by the £2 they paid on the door, then multiply the price of a pint by the number of heads, and say the ratio of records played over £38 is six-to-one, that makes... errr... that makes... him a crap DJ. So we're all agreed we're not coming back then? good.
  23. LOL actually somebody said that in all seriousness on essential modern soul years ago! which of course means he said it FIRST as well, so he must be a REALLY good DJ
  24. you lot must be loaded if you thing £50 for a record is cheap...
