it's entirely possible that the 'different mix' is just the different mastering for the lp and 45. for example, the 45's of 'midnight affair' by sandra wright and 'free' by james mason sound quite different to the lp versions, but they are not actually different mixes. a lot can me changed during a record cut, cheers Sutty

i wasn't going to contribute as i'm not a dj anymore apart from very rarely, and even more rarely on the northern scene (like once every 10 years! ) so i'm (thankfully) not directly affected by this, but what the hell all this talk of people having to sell records to buy more expensive ones is rubbish. there are thousands of 60's and 70's records out there and if someone can't put a set together of great 60's and 70's soul at a generally low premium per record has a complete lack of imagination and ideas. the easy route is to 'upgrade' to monied records and compete with the people who already have them over time, but you're just being a wannabee and trying to get recognition by association. go out in the field and get your head in some record boxes, listen to music and make a decision yourself on what to play and it won't cost you a fortune. what makes a 'dj' think that all their audience want to hear are expensive oldies and expensive in-demanders rather than simply top quality soul music. wji've only ever met one person who actually left the dancefloor as he called a record 'cheap shit' and wouldn't dance to anything less than £100; but then again he really was a bit of an idiot and the other 200 people in the room carried on dancing. the bottom line is half of this 'upgrading' stuff is all about an ego trip and has to do with wanting everybody to luuurve you by making them dance. apart from that i'm not bothered

yes as Pete said they became the real thing, you need to watch those repeats of 'wheeltappers and shunters' on cable to see the chants in action inbetween bernard manning and a bloke spinning plates on sticks (hands up who remembers that top 70's stage practice, bring it back). they also did the great 2 stepper 'i've been trying' on chipping norton. then when they were the real thing they did 'children of the ghetto' i think the kids call it a choon cheers Paul

he'll probably kill me, but i remember a good friend of mine (who shall remain nameless, but is on this list and will still kill me even though i haven't named him) coming back from an all nighter shall we say somewhat worse for wear, going down the local sunday market boot fair, and proudly coming round straight away with a mint british issue of a Jackie Lee 45 that he'd never heard of. I went in the kitchen and made a cup of tea, only to return into the room and he had suddenly realised he had bought a 45 that sounded nothing like the Jackie Lee that we all know, because he had just played the b-side to 'Rupert The Bear' what's that song by the verve? 'the drugs don't work'? well they did then...... :thumbsup:

i have to question what sort of state the northern soul scene in the UK has got itself into, when the price of records has to be pointed out at all on a night out. The whole idea of money dictating the content of a night out is pretty disc-gusting if you'll excuse the pun. the northern soul scene surely needs to take a look at itself and what it is really all about, it's a great scene of great music but if it's being dictated to by moneymen then more fool those that allow it to happen. just my opinion that's all. cheers Paul

when i spoke to Rod Dearlove about this on the blower a few years back now, he said this album came from an old cassette from jessie that was cleaned up and pressed in agreement with him, as the masters are lost. i don't believe there is any other release apart from the one on the yellow label lp released via Rod. Somebody may be able to correct me but that's what he told me. cheers Paul
