I got first dibs about 10 days ago and helped sort them out, had a few bits myself Mick Smith got tipped off and rushed down cleared out the British 7"'s at the weekend about 1500 albums from 1965 to 1982-ish, maybe 500 singles. no 12"'s. All soul. The locals have raided now but there's plenty left, we're not millionaires down here you know. cheers Paul

I bought a copy of John Bowie off Butch (a well-known and very good UK 60's DJ Smitty btw) a few years back now and he told me about how he got a couple of copies from John's brother in the bronx, and it was one of the copies. Memory is hazy but i'm sure if anyone can get the story out of him it's worth telling in relation to this thread, he may even be able to help with getting in contact. the guy you are talking about is a friend of mine and i saw the records he had for sale before they were listed. he didn't have any record in quantity, what he had of hayes he sold (2 or 3 copies, only remember seeing 2) that was it. most were single copies, and they were all unplayed stock. so don't panic if anyone thinks they bought one and another 50 are about to turn up, they're not. cheers Paul

the wheel closed in 1971, some of those records were not made then (?) (Millie Jackson, Terry Callier, Greg Perry). As Pete says, they are available legally on cd's that are not expensive or hard to find. There is also a site that sells mp3 downloads, I assume it is legal but offhand can't remember the name of the site, maybe someone can help there? cheers Paul

i know, i mainly sell those big records and I got stung a few times when they changed the postage rates. a single lp went down but as soon as you get a few the price rockets up, especially outside the UK. stick to yer 45's fella it's a lot easier!

I agree Pete, die hard NS fans are not laymen though. Soul II soul created a uniquely British soul sound that became massive in the UK and was exported worldwide, which is rare. JB didn't create this alone but he was the figure elevated in the promotion of it and seen as the 'leader', if anyone was going to get any awards for the music it was always going to be him. 'fairplay', 'keep on movin' and 'back to life' were classic UK soul sounds, they were innovators not followers along with other people at that time (nellie hooper, simon law, etc). Whether anyone here personally sees them as that coming from the NS perspective is irrelevant IMHO, they did it. That's why he got the award, and he deserves it IMHO.

I think you'll find that the layman finds northern soul to be dismal pap (if they've even heard it), and soul 2 soul to be the people that had a worldwide hit with 'back to life' and other tracks. JB did an awful lot to promote and increase awareness of UK soul, you can't judge him on a 2 min documentary comment on NS, which if I remember was slated as being a pretty awful documentary all round. In fact the whole series was dubious. This 'debate' is laughable, JB has done more than anyone on this forum to promote soul music around the world, it's just not the small period of soul music most people on here seem attached to. they can be played ok but i have a couple (both marvin - whats going on and let's get it on) and they are quiter pressings but if they are clean copies they sound better... AND they are different mixes to the regular releases - from the original tapes, there are parts of WGO that fade out instead of just cutting into the next track. I'd buy them straight away if they are good titles.

you probably want the 7" but the lp with the ray bryant trio features an amazing version of somewhere over the rainbow, believe it or not!

it was easily available at the time everywhere but as with most boots there was just one press so it's just waiting for one to turn up for a fiver or so i guess. the version on the greatest hits cd is better than the alternate version and is the one that got played at the time, the song had been totally hammered by the time the boot came out.
