  1. folks - this idea was muted over 7 years ago on EMS From: paul sutton Reply-To: EssentialModernSoul@egroups.com Date: Sat, 23 Dec 2000 14:40:29 +0000 To: modern list Subject: [EssentialModernSoul] soul -its a career opening nowadays you know hi all ;-) i never realised until i opened up echoes today that mr searling is now going round under the trade name 'searling consultancy'. personally i find the idea of a 'soul consultant' absolutely fantastic, what a great job! so i assume he won't mind us consulting him on the identity of any cover-ups he or his friends may be playing, after all if you're paying your fee you should expect results in return. i have now decided that for the new year, i'm going to choose a similar career path, so i am proud to announce the opening of- set in 2 acres of landscape grounds offering luxurious accommodation: the mason-dixon OLDSOUL nursing home for the chemically and aurally challenged. with a reputation for excellence each individual room will contain a four-foot square of finest maple flooring, polished to perfection at 6 hour intervals, automatic under-floor talcum powder dispenser, and built in wall speakers set to a unique volume and tone level - sounding both tinny and muffled at the same time, with a slight over-distortion. obscure soul b-sides will be pumped out throughout the accomodation wing so that all guests can enjoy that wonderful soul night experience 24 hrs a day. carpeting is imported exclusively from the ravenscourt hotel, great yarmouth, for that unique 'head-spinning' experience of days gone by. in addition, there is the 'virtual record bar', where inmates, sorry, GUESTS, can take it in turns to stand behind a large wooden table perusing and bartering over unplayed american indie releases - using our in-house currency tokens, you too can own that obscure southern ballad you've always dreamed of. tokens and records are returned to matron at the end of each night to ensure the fun goes on and on for you and all your fellow 'soulies'. all guests are encouraged to blather on-and-on for hours-and hours about their vast knowledge of the 70's plastic industry and the bright colours on the fancy labels. magnifying glasses are provided for those whose special area of interest is looking at the run-out grooves and comparing catalogue numbers. catering is of the highest expected soul-quisine levels: out-of-date cheese and ham sandwiches, cold pies and mars bars, all washed down with a choice of warm rotten beer or warm rotten beer. bedding is not provided as the inmates are treated (at 3 hour intervals) to copious supplies of the finest 'bombay' mix of dried up battery acid and strychine, with just a hint of our own recipe of amphetamine sulphate - hand made in the refrectory bath by our retired door-staff daily. so forget about thoughts of spain or america, come along and live your glory years in the style you've become accustomed to in the OLDSOUL home for retired vinyl junkies. our registration does not include medical, convalescent, surgical and respite care. and definitely no garage records. or that darlin record by that bob whatsisname. cos they're not soul you know. prices on application, soulies with their own hair and teeth need not apply. seasons greetings to all, make this christmas the last one that you're 'soulfully challenged', get your applications in now before the rush starts. davey disco maitre-d'
  2. is this film actually released? ("Vinyl")? it was around in a bootleg form on t'internet and I missed downloading it and would gladly pay for a copy if I could get one. "there are only 4 bands in the world beginning with the letter Q"
  3. oh ok bully, i thought it counted as ron and both his embracers... i'll just take a sherbert dip with a straw from under the counter then, not for me you understand...
  4. ron and the embracers 'you came into my life'. can i have the green duck on the third shelf, ta.
  5. last time i played the 45 out i was asked who had remixed it, when i said it was a 1964 the guys jaw dropped to the floor. great record. took me a few years to find it and finally got one about 7/8 years ago and not seen another one. not on any isley lp's from the time either. cheers Paul
  6. i'm with you on this - fantastic album, i only picked it up myself recently and side 2 in particular is absolutely some of the best dells/charles stepney recordings ever. forget about trying to find tunes to play a northern nighter and sit down and listen to an amazing album of a band, arranger, musicians and songwriters hitting a creative peak. 'when you're alone' and the cover of terry calliers 'just as long as we're in love' are some of the finest 70's soul ever recorded and breathtaking. ignore at your peril. IMHO. oh, and marvel at where 4hero got a lot of their recent ideas from cos it could have been recorded yesterday. cheers Paul
  7. on the record it says "executive producer" aka "it's like this, I get to keep all the money from the record, you get to put your record out on my label. if there's any problem with that i'll meet you in the car park later to discuss why you never actually agreed to any of this in the first place" LOL
  8. probably this? https://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/294329...ght=gene%20king
  9. I got first dibs about 10 days ago and helped sort them out, had a few bits myself Mick Smith got tipped off and rushed down cleared out the British 7"'s at the weekend about 1500 albums from 1965 to 1982-ish, maybe 500 singles. no 12"'s. All soul. The locals have raided now but there's plenty left, we're not millionaires down here you know. cheers Paul
  10. I bought a copy of John Bowie off Butch (a well-known and very good UK 60's DJ Smitty btw) a few years back now and he told me about how he got a couple of copies from John's brother in the bronx, and it was one of the copies. Memory is hazy but i'm sure if anyone can get the story out of him it's worth telling in relation to this thread, he may even be able to help with getting in contact. Nice to hear from someone who was there Smitty, good luck. cheers Paul
  11. where's Ian Dewhirst - he found the one-sided 1st album acetate and says he's got another acetate album side nobody has ever heard...
  12. 'Brown Baby' off 'touch me in the morning' album
  13. part 1 is the first 2 mins. part 2 is the last 2 mins. the entire middle of the recording is missing.
  14. yes, can't locate my copy at the mo' but the other track written by Lonnie is great as well.
  15. the guy you are talking about is a friend of mine and i saw the records he had for sale before they were listed. he didn't have any record in quantity, what he had of hayes he sold (2 or 3 copies, only remember seeing 2) that was it. most were single copies, and they were all unplayed stock. so don't panic if anyone thinks they bought one and another 50 are about to turn up, they're not. cheers Paul
  16. get the album Mike, the 45 is only about 2 mins long.
  17. hi tobias - you have mail! cheers paul
  18. the wheel closed in 1971, some of those records were not made then (?) (Millie Jackson, Terry Callier, Greg Perry). As Pete says, they are available legally on cd's that are not expensive or hard to find. There is also a site that sells mp3 downloads, I assume it is legal but offhand can't remember the name of the site, maybe someone can help there? cheers Paul
  19. i know, i mainly sell those big records and I got stung a few times when they changed the postage rates. a single lp went down but as soon as you get a few the price rockets up, especially outside the UK. stick to yer 45's fella it's a lot easier!
  20. i'm sure you'll be safe. as long as he hasn't got access to the internet, goes to google and puts in sweets satisfy me baby which leads you straight to this thread don't tell them your name Pike
  21. 7's yes, 12"/albums definitely no, the cost goes up for each one Pete.
  22. they are all on schema, italian only Jock. i've got a mint copy of the 12" available as well AFTER somebody has bought Dereks of course!
  23. blimey this is an old thread! 'if i lose my woman' MAW mix is the real killer, still sounds great. hard to believe it was 1998. https://www.discogs.com/release/66445 and buy this off Derek /index.php?showtopic=63165 both are umpteen times better than michael proctor, well slightly better anyway IMHO
  24. I agree Pete, die hard NS fans are not laymen though. Soul II soul created a uniquely British soul sound that became massive in the UK and was exported worldwide, which is rare. JB didn't create this alone but he was the figure elevated in the promotion of it and seen as the 'leader', if anyone was going to get any awards for the music it was always going to be him. 'fairplay', 'keep on movin' and 'back to life' were classic UK soul sounds, they were innovators not followers along with other people at that time (nellie hooper, simon law, etc). Whether anyone here personally sees them as that coming from the NS perspective is irrelevant IMHO, they did it. That's why he got the award, and he deserves it IMHO.
  25. I think you'll find that the layman finds northern soul to be dismal pap (if they've even heard it), and soul 2 soul to be the people that had a worldwide hit with 'back to life' and other tracks. JB did an awful lot to promote and increase awareness of UK soul, you can't judge him on a 2 min documentary comment on NS, which if I remember was slated as being a pretty awful documentary all round. In fact the whole series was dubious. This 'debate' is laughable, JB has done more than anyone on this forum to promote soul music around the world, it's just not the small period of soul music most people on here seem attached to. For the record, I like NS and JB! cheers Paul
