i'd love to totally agree with you Tony but... you really cannot change some people's opinions on what they feel and they will never accept music outside certain era's or genres in many cases. i understand that you had that 'wtf!' elation many years ago, but for some, it just ain't gonna happen. they're happy and that's that, leave them to whatever they want to hear and find other people in another place. you are right to some extent, but the odds are stacked against you, but good luck and enjoy the journey cos that's what counts!

true house music like any other music is made as an artform, not purely pumped out for commercial gain. to criticise house as chart music or disco tripe is just showing how ignorant a person is of the music they are saying they despise. the same is true for any musical genre, it's possible it may have been made to maximise profit by selling lots of records ala philly in the 70's, but there is always the quality aspect that is in the forefront. the music that is made with this primary reason in mind is the music that is the cream of the crop, whenever it was made. this is why there is such a strong attachment to these music styles, like 60's soul, disco, modern soul, house, etc - because they all offer great moments of musical inspiration within their own self-imposed boundaries. but house music is, more than the others, primarily made to be heard in the right social environment through a big sound system, so it suffers from more criticism from those that do not get to hear it that way. it's all part of the same musical line. take 'the love i lost' - if they had not mixed the hi-hat too high by mistake, that sound may never have taken off the way it did at the time, but it created something new. it's almost like a single inspirational and accidental link between soul music before and disco and house music afterwards. but let's not pretent that because that link exists, these diverse sounds will necessarily work in a single room for all the people there, there are too many people who only want to hear one sound and will react against anything else. that doesn't make them any better or worse than anyone else, it's just what they want to hear. what can make your eyes roll is when something is criticised inanely with nothing to really back it up other than the incorrect line of 'it's just chart music'. joe claussell or kerri chandler will not be appearing on your tv anyday soon on a saturday teatime as incidental music on the lottery draw, just as the ringleaders or arthur russell didn't get any exposure either. if the sixties fans want to blame anyone for house music, blame gamble and huff, they invented disco cheers Sutty

Bit of a strange choice to post up as an example of a house record someway related to soul music? QH has done many quality productions with vocals which fit into the uptempo end of the modern soul scene , this is the side of his work that is very far removed from, and makes no attempt to make any claim that it is in any way, a soul recording? this is clearly a house record end of. I'd have thought maybe you could have posted something like 'Angel' or 'Traveling', or one of his remixes like Alicia Keys 'Diary' or Luther 'Apologize' as a better example of something that may cross over into the soul scene? cheers Sutty

I had a Hamilton Brothers Lp from the early 80's with a grey cover. I can't remember any details on it as I sold it on fairly quickly to someone in Japan. I'd describe it's best moments as 2nd rate sweet soul/fairly weak sounding disco, but the guy seemed made up with it and had been looking for it for years. the world has truly gone mad, this is a great record for certain, but over £100? it was a £20 record 2 months ago, and nobody was interested in buying it anyway!

how tragic that the scene these records were made for/on has petered out to a few specialist nights, partly because people got ripped off for too long at dance clubs with over-pricing and other reasons, partly because rock music is fashionable again instead with the younger generation - and in the UK, partly because the UK soul scene actively discouraged and slagged off these very records at the time, in person and in print, as 'that's not soul music' 1000 or so extra sales of 'father' at the time would have made a big difference to soundmen-on-wax still being in the business of releasing more great records by the Bobiens. Now it's all too late and the only ones who might benefit are the second hand record dealers. at least it's finally accepted that Kenny is soulful! cheers Sutty

there's going to be a glut of these (there's another version just released on 45 as well) as there parts have been leaked out, i've got these ones and several others - what's going on/mercy, mercy me/ain't nothing like the real thing/ain't no mountain high enough, plus some other artists (Stevie Wonder 'superstition', Bob Marley, etc). The one you're talking about has taken the basic track and re-edited it and added a dub-like echo to the guitar part. I was messing about with the track a while back and did some rough mixes without strings, i'll find them and load one or two up (then you can all have a good laugh!) cheers Sutty

Craig is 101% a great seller, excellent packaging, perfect gradings, and he is cheaper than almost anyone else on postage from the USA. I ordered a record off him recently and it took a month to come through so don't panic - he pulled it out and checked it before sending, noticed a tiny edge-chip on it, mailed me and offered a full refund or 50% off. when it arrived it was exactly as described and played perfectly, like every other record i've ever bought from him. as i recall the first batch of vise 45's came via Ian Clarke, he sold it to Keb, and he scratched the address out with a pin on all his copies to stop anyone finding out his source. So he told me anyway! it looked like the one in the scan (albeit without the pin scratching done on the label), so I guess more copies have turned up - which leads to the age-old question - why has he price gone up if there are more on the market now lol
