Wasn't the situation on this one a bit different to the others, which were your productions. At the time you were passing off David Rhodes as an authentic 1974 press that you found a box of in Danny Leake's basement I think it was, when you in fact pressed them up knowing full well that they were not authentic 1974 pressings at all. I can understand how you would maybe make up a story about one of your own productions, as you say some quarters would probably look down on the record before they heard it - but in the case of David Rhodes, it did appear that this was a blatant attempt to make money by deception as it had no association with your productions. I'm not concerned over the politics or that it was actually yourself involved, but what was the reasoning behind this move other than deception and profit? i'm not here to beat you up, it's just I don't think you've ever stated why you made such a move, and I know that it got a lot of people's backs up - they were initially being trickled out and selling for £100/£150 a time, until the hoax was figured out/revealed. cheers Sutty

If it's the one I think it is Chris, it's all a bit supper-club, features a passable but dull version of 'ooh baby I love you' (freddie hughes), and it's not worth much at all, as it's almost impossible to sell to anyone! cheers and Happy New Year Paul

why bother making that negative comment? the guys just keen to hear some more music similar to what he's just discovered. Why the necessity to use it as an excuse to make an underhand comment quite probably meaning 'it ain't northern so it's shite'... sigh and happy xmas! cheers Sutty

to answer your question, it's not the future of the soul scene at all, it's music that's been around for years but maybe you just haven't heard. What I would say is if you like it that much and start checking out the jazzier side of things then you may go down a rather expensive, time-consuming but enjoyable path - congratulations you just discovered a musical sub-genre! (and I don't mean any of that patronisingly to you, nobody has heard everything - despite the claims of some people on the internet nowadays lol) check the schema label as a start if you like the more recent production style. try some soundclips on juno, they have a jazz/breakbeat section to trawl through. cheers Sutty

It's a scam Dave, they don't have any records. All they have done is copy other peoples sales inventories and then advertise the same records for sale at a ludicrously high price. If anyone bites and places an order they buy the record from someone else then ship on at a vast profit, if they can't get a copy they say it's already sold. I can't believe Gemm still allow them on there but I suppose they will require some real proof that this is a con, and apart from asking to go round and see their non-existent collections, I can't see how they'll be able to prove anything. Sadly, some people actually believe these are the correct prices records sell for, when they are just pie-in-the-sky nonsense! ARCHDD has over a third of a million items for sale, but only has 23 feedbacks in over 5 years, so it can't be that lucrative, but I guess you only need a few people a year to bite and you've got a grand for doing nothing! cheers and season's greetings Paul

nah, if it's the same Tom, he's been on EMS for years, he will want the records if he can get them, if not mp3's until he can get them, he's a nice guy and runs a radio show (or did anyway!) over there.

yes please m8

Definitely not, you're in a position of high moral authority and need to act as such at all times. If the residents of Warmington-on-sea had taken that attitude we'd all be speaking German now

make your mind up Simon, aren't you meant to be leading the campaign against the dumbing down of northern soul

Wild Honey: I Can´t Go On/kenny Rankin: In The Name Of Love (columbia)
Sutty replied to a topic in Record Wants
got a nice copy of the original lp if that will do, although i'm guessing it was also on a 45 as most requests on here are for 45's? drop me a PM if you're interested, cheers Paul -
i'd love to totally agree with you Tony but... you really cannot change some people's opinions on what they feel and they will never accept music outside certain era's or genres in many cases. i understand that you had that 'wtf!' elation many years ago, but for some, it just ain't gonna happen. they're happy and that's that, leave them to whatever they want to hear and find other people in another place. you are right to some extent, but the odds are stacked against you, but good luck and enjoy the journey cos that's what counts!

true house music like any other music is made as an artform, not purely pumped out for commercial gain. to criticise house as chart music or disco tripe is just showing how ignorant a person is of the music they are saying they despise. the same is true for any musical genre, it's possible it may have been made to maximise profit by selling lots of records ala philly in the 70's, but there is always the quality aspect that is in the forefront. the music that is made with this primary reason in mind is the music that is the cream of the crop, whenever it was made. this is why there is such a strong attachment to these music styles, like 60's soul, disco, modern soul, house, etc - because they all offer great moments of musical inspiration within their own self-imposed boundaries. but house music is, more than the others, primarily made to be heard in the right social environment through a big sound system, so it suffers from more criticism from those that do not get to hear it that way. it's all part of the same musical line. take 'the love i lost' - if they had not mixed the hi-hat too high by mistake, that sound may never have taken off the way it did at the time, but it created something new. it's almost like a single inspirational and accidental link between soul music before and disco and house music afterwards. but let's not pretent that because that link exists, these diverse sounds will necessarily work in a single room for all the people there, there are too many people who only want to hear one sound and will react against anything else. that doesn't make them any better or worse than anyone else, it's just what they want to hear. what can make your eyes roll is when something is criticised inanely with nothing to really back it up other than the incorrect line of 'it's just chart music'. joe claussell or kerri chandler will not be appearing on your tv anyday soon on a saturday teatime as incidental music on the lottery draw, just as the ringleaders or arthur russell didn't get any exposure either. if the sixties fans want to blame anyone for house music, blame gamble and huff, they invented disco cheers Sutty

Bit of a strange choice to post up as an example of a house record someway related to soul music? QH has done many quality productions with vocals which fit into the uptempo end of the modern soul scene , this is the side of his work that is very far removed from, and makes no attempt to make any claim that it is in any way, a soul recording? this is clearly a house record end of. I'd have thought maybe you could have posted something like 'Angel' or 'Traveling', or one of his remixes like Alicia Keys 'Diary' or Luther 'Apologize' as a better example of something that may cross over into the soul scene? cheers Sutty

I had a Hamilton Brothers Lp from the early 80's with a grey cover. I can't remember any details on it as I sold it on fairly quickly to someone in Japan. I'd describe it's best moments as 2nd rate sweet soul/fairly weak sounding disco, but the guy seemed made up with it and had been looking for it for years. I was more than happy to take his money for it! cheers Sutty

If Ian has gone now, does this mean we will never hear his new cd and know what a 'modern-room northern floorfilling soul stepper' is? -
exactly the same recording as 'hypnotized' on the clifton dyson 'slow your body down' lp side 2, using a different name, with a non-lp dyson boogie track on the other side, on a creative funk 12" cheers Sutty

the world has truly gone mad, this is a great record for certain, but over £100? it was a £20 record 2 months ago, and nobody was interested in buying it anyway!

how tragic that the scene these records were made for/on has petered out to a few specialist nights, partly because people got ripped off for too long at dance clubs with over-pricing and other reasons, partly because rock music is fashionable again instead with the younger generation - and in the UK, partly because the UK soul scene actively discouraged and slagged off these very records at the time, in person and in print, as 'that's not soul music' 1000 or so extra sales of 'father' at the time would have made a big difference to soundmen-on-wax still being in the business of releasing more great records by the Bobiens. Now it's all too late and the only ones who might benefit are the second hand record dealers. at least it's finally accepted that Kenny is soulful! cheers Sutty

its the other side of 'i won't hold it against you', and also on the lp 'tellin it like it is' on bell (and there are other 45 and non-45 tracks on the lp that are just as awesome, if you like that track the lp is a no-brainer) - check 'i've got to go on without you' in a similar vein (45 and lp) cheers Sutty

there's going to be a glut of these (there's another version just released on 45 as well) as there parts have been leaked out, i've got these ones and several others - what's going on/mercy, mercy me/ain't nothing like the real thing/ain't no mountain high enough, plus some other artists (Stevie Wonder 'superstition', Bob Marley, etc). The one you're talking about has taken the basic track and re-edited it and added a dub-like echo to the guitar part. I was messing about with the track a while back and did some rough mixes without strings, i'll find them and load one or two up (then you can all have a good laugh!) cheers Sutty
