Good story. Mine was kind of similar in a way in that it was handed down, but I got it all at once - a bunch of motown and beatles 45's and a dansette from my Nan. I still count the copy of 'tears of a clown' as my first ever record and still have it, and have memories of listening to the top 40 in the front room with my dad and that track being played on the top 40 through the monogram, and loving it, and holding the mic of my dad's reel-to-reel up to the speaker and everyone having to be really quiet while it was being recorded off the radio. I then listened to it on repeat so when I got given the record and player I was majorly excited. Many years later I was regaled with stories of 'the casino' by kids 2/3 years older than me that went and brought back cassettes of last Saturday nights sounds recorded on those mono tape recorders left in front of the speakers, Monday dinnertime was sitting around listening to these tapes from the older kids. To be honest, most of it was people talking and clapping, and I wasn't taken with the music that much at all, sounded like a right mess apart from the odd track - but I hear certain records now and they just take me back to that time immediately. Not that I want to go back there thanks very much cheers Sutty

indeed, don't know why I put Walker seeing as her name on the 45 label I was looking at when i posted lol
-
Thought it might be a little too late although it has the sound - when was it recorded do you know? I know the 12" e.p. that came afterwards was 70's, but they were old recordings with additional instrumentation added on, so the 7" is different and i'd suspect maybe 69/70??? cheers Sutty

Gloria Walker 'Deep inside of you' in columbia 45 is a detroit recording and I think fits your bill, but i'm not sure when it was recorded? they added a more disco-ey beat to the 'deep inside you' 12" e.p. but the 45 is the pre-disco version. Just put it on and thought of this thread. Immense 45. cheers Sutty

Lloyd Williams ... Great X-Over, Soul Sam Spin Hear
Sutty replied to Andreas's topic in Record Sales
I pm'd you last night to no response... i like the strings! -
that's because after I posted it up and before you looked, somebody's bought it (or the seller's removed it), it was for sale under this listing here https://www.discogs.com/Summits-Sleepwalking-Ill-Never-Say-No/release/3091391

some people are just either really dim or don't know how to use Google, there's been a minter sat on Discogs for £173 while that £644 auction was going on, and it's still there (presumably same Oslo seller) https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=3091391&ev=rb

and he's relisted it as M- https://www.ebay.com/itm/PATTI-JO-45-Make-me-believe-M-73-WAND-/230679978548?_trksid=p4340.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D230667114579%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3144193905161381387

I've got a heavy silver metal 200x7" one I don't use anymore, extremely solid (not the cheap ones that are about, this is a proper flight case type thing - got it in a trade with backdoor Kenny years ago but don't let that put you off lol), and a big old 600x7" count black one too, i'll get them out tomorrow and get a couple of photos up, been meaning to move them on for ages. I really like the silver one but it's really of no use to me. cheers Sutty

there's a Doctor Bird copy @ £300 on https://selectorsmusic.com/ right now just to let you know, but a word of warning, I have 2 paypal claims open against them for non-delivery. They don't respond to mails, voicemails and the shop puts you onto a guy that runs their mail order who responds to nothing. It comes up on a google search so you may be directed to it, so if you see it and click on buy, proceed with caution! cheers Sutty

Robin is from Carlisle and as far as I know is still there, but not heard from him/her for donkeys years. Yes did have a visit one night that lasted a week! I met Robin through Bub, Jerry and Stuart. Stuart is still with us and on facebook, the other 2 guys sadly missed :/ we did have some REALLY good laughs, and between them when on form it was like being in a top comedy show, I could tell many a tale. I only saw Mick at the 100 club and i've not been for about 10 years I guess but he was always a nice guy I thought. I'm in almost daily contact with Jimmy Lynn, he's very well, made a million or thereabouts with his partner out of property development and is as ever making his own music in between appearing to enjoy himself immensely and still not doing a proper job, he's done all right. He's been a good friend of mine for many many years, Now, how long have you got with Jimmy tales lol, love him to bits (but not in the biblical sense), lets just say every event on a daily basis has a story attached to it. Lots of good memories, some rather insane ones, and a friend for life, and there aren't many of them about, cheers Sutty

The original isn't on a 12 it came out in the 60s, it's on the 'heavy soul' lp, the 7 and 12 are both legal uk reissues Cheers Sutty

I've got a mint copy of the album from 1977 'goldwax collection vol 2' on vivid sound Japan I might be persuaded to part with, which is the OVO way of getting it rather than the much later 45 issue (lol) p.s. how you doing long time no see m8

Rare Soul Collecting In 50 Years Time - Is This The Future?
Sutty replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
In 10 years time, everyone in an event has their iphone connected to the free wifi and can vote via an app on the music being played right now. This info is stored in a cloud database with a pinpoint to the location, and an algorithm is used to relate the music being played in relation to the rest of the music that evening based on popularity, building up a global cloud-based database built over time and ever-expanding. The central reporting point of the app will be able to use another algorithm to predict the next tune in the same style that fits best for the crowd in the event and activate the music selection in the location, thus providing the maximum enjoyment for the crowd. The DJ is the crowd, and the work is done by all the crowds around the world, so all the provider of the database has to do is come up with a new algorithm for any new music style that evolves. This of course is the stuff of fiction, but only because the device will be more advanced than an iphone, the 'database' will be a series of interlinked cloud-based personal databases that are shared amongst millions of users, and it will probably happen within 3 or 4 years. Meanwhile, back at the local town hall, Mick's still haggling with the local record dealer over that rare Detroit acetate... -
as a general rule i'd see it as more that (rightly) teenagers don't want to hang around with a bunch of 50-year olds+ on a night out, they won't be able to afford to buy the OG vinyl they hear generally so will simply d/l the tracks they like and play it amongst their mates off their laptop or ipod. you can quote a few exceptions that might run the odd night, but how many of their age group in attendance actually care that they're playing their 45's, they just like the music. a few may buy into the mystique of the ns/rare soul scene but it won't be many, it's not possible unless they're loaded! and old people at a night out = bunch of old farts to most teens!

Rare Soul Collecting In 50 Years Time - Is This The Future?
Sutty replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
50 years Ian? try 5 i'd say if not less, cloud storage and access is already here and will be the norm before we know it - Steve Jobs will make it the next trendy thing for his apple users and the rest will follow, it's one of their big pushes in the immediate future, win the hearts and minds of the people and they'll go along with it for the speed and convenience. Whether the rare soul vinyl scene will follow, i'd say very doubtful in the immediate future, after all you have people that still refuse to play lp only tracks off the original lp! but it's here and it's gonna happen fast IMO. Who would have dreamt the stuff of the iphone/ipad a few years back, I remember them showing the 'pinch and drag' screen on a coffee table demo on youtube before the iphone came out and it seemed like an amazing sci-fi future. It was the norm within a year. Read this book yet? it was written 31 years ago but it's still relevant and a lot of the predictions are here and now, can be a bit dry in places though! we are living in the third wave. cheers Sutty -
At least his daughters have got a nice holiday from him selling his record collection, so something good has come from a pretty sad debacle really - and he's not my friend at all, don't know him, just done some good business (as have quite a lot of others) with a guy who is very inexperienced in dealing with selling on the internet. It seems to me that his crime was simply ignorance, never spite, and that it became a battle for revenge more than anything, trying to destroy someone's reputation over 99p plus post, something i'll never understand. cheers Sutty
-
the 12" was booted as a white RCA demo, it's good quality but it's easy to spot, you can hear someone putting the needle on the record at the start! cheers Sutty
-
Seems to me the hunger for getting something for about 100 times less than the going rate is clouding the objectivity of a new seller getting to grips with systems he's never used before. Hope you work something out for both of your benefits, must be very frustrating not to get bargain of the year cheers Sutty

I've just bought a load of stuff from Dave, he's selling his collection at very good prices, he's an upstanding guy it seems to me and it's probably a genuine mistake as he wasn't clued up on paypal so offered advice so he could receive payments. The money is going to his daughters, so although you may seem a little peeved, I think calling him an arsehole is way out of line and i'm sure a more reasonable approach would sort things out. Let's face it, you know 99p is ridiculously cheap and you were prepared to go to £50 so give the guy a break and you both may get a good deal out of it IMO some of his sales left outside ebay Dave's Sales on EMS cheers Sutty

Did Levi Lead Sing On All The 4 Tops Songs
Sutty replied to Staceys Dad's topic in All About the SOUL
'Tell me you love me' from 'Meeting of the minds' was released on 45 under the name 'Lawrence Payton' rather than the Four Tops for some reason cheers Sutty -
the deck on the vid with the cat? looks like a vestax, i've got one in the front room. My technics packed up on one channel so I bought the vestax to replace it, but then Teee kindly fixed my technics for the record room. Hardly ever use the vestax, when you're back over if you really want one you can come over and check it out and we can sort something out if you like, it's gathering dust to be honest - cant compete with the telly in there lol cheers Paul
