Nth Yorks Sth Durham New Year Soul Weekend Piercebridge
Eddiefoster commented on Chalky's event in Weekenders
Looking forwards to this immensely - honoured to be asked to DJ at what will be my first ever weekender! well the first I will have stayed at for the duration anyway. See you all there for the fun Now where did I put my playbox! -
Oh what a night...............ladies night The girls did good - not a surprise to me but a treat for the Ashton faithful none-the-less Phil kicked the night off with his usual eclectic selections followed by Luci Jones' set which prompted lots of positive feedback and quite rightly (despite the sound system gremlins). Joan Livesey was on fire lighting up the room as always...and then of course followed the triumphant return of Roger Banks to the old stomping ground in fine style..... Chris Churm rounded off a fantastic night and an incredible, enjoyable 2023 - so a GREAT BIG THANKS to all of you who have supported our little club this year it is so much appreciated

Counting down towards this evening's festive instalment at Culcheth where it's always been a musical treat but gathering even more traction following the move to the excellent new venue.... Digging around the boxes in readiness right now See you all there

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2024 we're looking to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests. Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon. Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL. In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor. We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

What can I say? I wasn’t one bit surprised by the success of the night - unlike Joan who (as she mentioned in the comments section) told me she had wondered if, after the long gap in Grumpy Soul events, anyone still wanted it!!! My answer to that wasn’t intentionally rude, but in retrospect could’ve been taken as such – “DER” I shouted probably too loudly…thankfully I escaped without reprimand. Intro waffle over – to sum it up all my expectations were met if not exceeded, a great crowd assembled in anticipation (and many a face I’ve not seen at Culcheth before) throw in a fantastic mix of high quality music all night, delivered with such craft by all the DJs, and what’s not to like? I have to say that I didn’t hear a single negative comment all night and many, many exclamations of high praise throughout, which speaks for itself. I should add it was a shame that Dave Welding couldn’t make it to complete the team of usual suspects, but hopefully he could be there next time if we can convince BazM to feature a repeat! (how do you add voting buttons?) Hopefully those who haven’t attended Culcheth previously will have realised just what a great venue this is and plan a return visit, well worth it as the ethos isn’t at all far removed from this wonderful instalment IMO. PS – apologies to the guys in the modern room I didn’t manage a visit but again heard lots of positive comments, so job done clearly.
