  1. Are you trying to confuse me Bob? - I hadn't thought of that
  2. I've been pleasantly surprised with the reaction to Keith & Billie by the dancefloor at Ashton - you never know do you!! As it happens the flip is also something that was otherwise never released until 2004 on Grapevine 2000 (Jerry Williams)
  3. I'm thinking of arranging my selections for the night based on label colour Bob, starting with plain white, then black etc. and eventually progressing to those vivid muli-coloured ones that make me feel like I'm seeing double
  4. Just to be clear Mick am I smashie or nicey?? Neither of them are what Robbo calls me I can't repeat it here
I for one had a fabulous night at Culcheth - we arrived slightly later than planned due to the ever unreliable mancunian way after collecting Robbo (who by the way was on top form already by then) - mental note to self, just detour back to the M60 next time!!! Mick Howard had already taken charge of the wheels of steel delivering one of his usual solid sets (Mick where's the list?) a great mix with one eye on the square wooden thing of course. Robbo - joined by his long time partner in crime Bob Hinsley (always wonderful to see Bob) were up next and as expected set the bar high, no pressure Simon... The Culcheth crowd is never the same month on month so always a nice challenge to try and find the sweet spot, of course that's a moving target but I enjoyed trying - my set listed below to give a feel of the night, maybe not all in the correct order (I've slept since) .... Kev Murph as we've now mentioned in many a review, is really enjoying the final hour and all I can say is that right at the end of the night the floor was still buzzing when he dropped the needle on The Magnetics - Count The Days (whoosh as Mick would say ) I should add - I popped my head into the modern room briefly on a few occasions to observe a happy looking crowd and a lively floor. Great Job BazM - keep up the good work 1. Exotics - Let's Get Together 2. Keith & Billie - Tastes Sour Don't It 3. The Temptations - You've Got To Earn It 4. Troy Dodds - Try My Love 5. Charles Sheffield - It's Your Voodoo Working 6. Solomon Burke - Save It 7. Hayes Cotton - Black Wings Have My Angel 8. Gene Toones - What More Do You Want 9. Paris - Sleepless Nights 10. Vivian Carol - Oh Yeh, Yeah, Yeah 11. Lee Rogers - Go Go Girl 12. The Venturas - Heart Of Love 13. Timmie Williams - Competition 14. Ernestine Eady - Let's Talk It Over 15. Traditions - Twinkle Little Star 16. Leo Price & Band - Hey Now Baby 17. Bo Fowler - The Upper Hand 18. Johnny Praye - Can't Get Too Much Love 19. The Celebrities - I Choose You Baby 20. Tommy Ridgely - My Love Gets Stronger 21. Cody Black - It's Our Time To Fall In Love 22. Little Dooley - If Ever I Needed You 23. Chuck Cockerham - Have I Got A Right 24. Little Reuben - In The Name Of Loneliness 25. Johnny Gilliam - Room Full Of Tears
  5. Just browsing the play box .... Pulled out this Lifeline Gem from Chalky ... Why not eh! https://youtu.be/Vmr1OJCvt3U?si=PN3YSbaS0HB07bfg
  6. The soul suspects version off dogging I reckon
  7. Ramping up for the monthly pilgrimage to Culcheth - how about a bit of this???
  8. Genuinely one of the best live acts I ever saw at a Northern Soul event I was captivated by his performance. Thanks for the music

    ASHTON UKRAINIAN CLUB

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests. Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon. Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL. In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor. We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

  19. Open Office is a free alternative....not certain if you'd be happy using it but worth a try https://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html
A fantastic night - as already stated by Mick & Rob well deserved for Baz and all his efforts in promotion with all the unseen trials and tribulations in setting all this up for our enjoyment, brilliant to see so many in attendance. I spent most of the night in the Rare & Underplayed room but ventured into both the main room and Modern rooms many times to sample the atmosphere in both which by early evening was really growing and starting to bounce! A huge thanks as always from me to all the DJs and of course the crowd who without them all this would be pointless Here's my selections from the last hour - I promised myself to try and keep it in the ethos of the Kenwood Suite and the Rare & Underplayed side of things Cleveland Robinson - Boy (1006) Keith & Billie - Tastes Sour Don't It Richard Stoute - What Bag I'm In Johnny Rodgers - Make A Change The Informers - A Hard Way To Go Henry Moore - You Really Grab Me Cash McCall - More Power To You Solomon Burke - Save It Hayes Cotton - I'll Be Waiting (Claire) P.P. Arnold - Speak To Me Bo Fowler - The Upper Hand (Associated Recording Studios) The Clovers - For Days The Vontastics - Let Me Down Easy The O'Jays - That's Alright The Clovers - Try My Lovin' On You Gene Faith - My Baby's Missing The Fabulous Apollos - What's So Good To You Ron Kenoly - Moving On The Vibrations - Love In Them There Hills Cody Black - It's Our Time To Fall In Love Carl Hall - Is Your Love Going Or Growing Don & Debbi - I Can Be Happy Darrow Fletcher - I Think I'm Gonna Write A Song
  20. A few memorable flyers from way back when (Thanks Dave Holt)
  21. Well said Rob - I ran out of likes whatever that means so I'm back to typing again Are you sure he didn't pay you???
  22. I echo your thoughts Steve - it's easy to underestimate how much work goes into pulling these things together and Baz is one of the hardest working promoters out there, as well as a fantastic DJ able of pulling together amazing sets across the sub-genres which many are not aware of ..... deffo not a pigeon hole X-over and Modern DJ, in fact a Dark Horse .... his profile is missing from this thread isn't it!!! Footnote - Baz paid me to say all that
