The death of large Hall commercial oldies nighters
Lucky One replied to Geeselad's topic in All About the SOUL
My wife and I attended the kings hall allnighter last Saturday mainly because my wife enjoys it not really my bag but still a good night out. Numbers were down but with so much going on these days is it any surprise to anyone really. I can remember when I was going to Wigan regularly in 1976 around November of that year I and a few friends went one Saturday night to the casino on a really cold foggy night, when we arrived in the early hours of Sunday morning to find there were probably 200 at the most in the entire building so what`s the big deal. Say what you like about the so called glory day`s of the 70s I prefer the scene today so much choice and variety which did not exist then. The previous Saturday we visited Rugby which is very much up my street isn`t that the great thing about today`s scene you can do the same thing each week but it can be so different long my this continue. -

I remember seeing this clip on top of the pops at the time and being very impressed with it. I was aware of the scene due to a lot of the older lad`s on my estate going to Wigan, like a lot of people of my age (57) it started the ball rolling as regards our involvement on the scene within little over a year I started going to Wigan myself, on this coming Saturday my wife and I are off to Rugby allnighter 43 years later I am still at it so couldn't have been no bad thing. Loved seeing Gethro dancing great to watch and a very nice bloke as well always said hello when I saw him at nighters . Hope he is well and still loving our music as I am to this day. -
Everything in life changes the 100 club allnighters are no different. Can you imagine the soul scene without it?. It would certainly be a lot poorer nothing has come close to what it has done past or present long may this great event continue. On a personal note my wife and I are looking forward to next months event to which we will be making our fourth visit to the best allnighter ever.

Am I right in recalling that Junior Walker performed at Wigan around the same time May 1977. I went to that allnighter brilliant performance best I ever witnessed.

A superb clip of a great nighter, and great period for the scene when there wasn't so much going on which made it all a bit special something that seems to be lacking today or is that just me.

As ever quality all the way a copy of this will be in our household very soon. The first two pied piper`s are excellent this is no different. This CD will be put to good use on my thirty mile round trip to work in the coming week`s while stuck in traffic.

Friday Night Oldies Night "beginning of the end"?
Lucky One replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
In some respects that is true, but they were great in terms of the atmosphere and also were a learning curve for people such as myself who hadn't` at that point been into the music very long. -
All the best for a speedy recovery, always a gentleman.

Love the post by colouredman totally spot on, long may it be the case. Slightly off topic two weeks ago my wife and I went on holiday to Spain while in Cadiz we walked passed few bars and night clubs, one of the clubs had a poster outside advertising up and coming events one of which was a motown and northern soul night. What a great sight I firmly believe there is a future for this great music .

I have been to Keele allnighter many times since the early 1990`s, has always been a special place to those who have been since those days when there wasn't so much going on. I hope to attend on Saturday always a special place with loads of memories. I certainly enjoyed it more than Wigan which I went to many times but on refection I went too many times where as Keele was on less frequently so I tended to enjoy it more, hope you enjoy it I always did and hope to do so on Saturday.

I had the good fortune to attend the Yate allnighter in the summer of 1979. One Saturday night I went into my local pub for a night on the beer walked into three lads who were going to Yate later on and asked if I wanted to tag along with them, went home got some money and had one of the best nights ever. We travelled in a very tired mark 2 Jaguar which took just over an hour to get to Yate from Wolverhampton, no speed cameras in those days else Andy RIP would have certainly lost his licence. Great night for many reasons that's why I can remember it so clearly 37 years later.

As someone who grew up in Wolverhampton during the seventies while getting involved more involved with the soul scene as the years went by, Gethro is someone I always remember with affection friendly bloke who always had time for youngsters such as myself. The best dancer I ever saw along with Keb .Will buy the book as soon as possible looking forward to reading it.

Sad news about the leisure centre being demolished, loved the Ric-Tic revue how could you forget a night like that one of the best ever. I also went to one of the Friday night oldies allnighters a month or so before.

About time this club got some attention in the media, although I was too young to attend I got into this music because my friends older brother went and introduced me to the best music ever thanks Andy I am forever grateful. -
Articles: The Post Wigan Years - Northern Soul
Lucky One replied to Chalky's topic in Front Page News & Articles
Brilliant read chalky, when you put the wigan era into context in relation to the history of scene, before and after it was a small part important but not the be all and end all of the scene, anyone who knows anything about it will always agree with that loved reading it.- 140 comments

New Kent Pied Piper Cd - Can't Wait For This
Lucky One replied to Tony Turner's topic in All About the SOUL
Excellent quality all the way as ever from kent, well done Ady. -
RIP Ben a real legend if ever there was one.
-
RIP Errol, a few years ago my wife and I went to see Errol Brown and his group don't think they were the original hot chocolate at Wolverhampton' s Grand theatre . What a great show it was, he gave a great performance and had everyone in the palm of his hand as all great artists do which is exactly what he was.

Looks very interesting looking forward to attending this if able to do so.

I have long been of the opinion that the best events be they allnighters, soul nights or weekender are the ones that offer a wide variety of musical styles via wide variety of DJ' s. That is exactly what Rugby offers long may this continue, the promoters have certainly got it right. Looking forward to my next visit which unfortunately won,t be till November due to work commitments.

I have just uploaded this to my kindle, will read later today. One city in America I have always wanted to visit is Detroit, love the music that came out of there in 1960's.
