So, today's three: Karmello Brooks - Tell Me Baby Junior McCants - The Boy Needs A Girl Nomads - Something Bad First two are pretty new listens to me (probably ancient oldies to you lot) - Karmello Brooks lovely, sophisticated sound - I'm liking more of this stuff - is it my age?, McCants almost like an 80s UK indie band sound (just guitars n drums) shame he came off his bike!!! Nomads haven't heard in donkeys years and now back on the playlist. Every day it's 3 different faves three different little bits of heaven!

My little piece of heaven was walking into my first ever Notts Palais all-dayer, wide eyed, heart pounding and seeing for the first time a proper soul venue - a heaving dance floor giving it some to Quick Change Artist. Deafening, sweltering and effing brilliant! A defining moment in my life - no going back.

Spooky & Sue - I've Got The Need. Once again, bought without listening - pretty pink label. Think I'll break THAT one over my knee as well. Can't believe I've still got some of this rubbish.

Oh God - bought that one as well 'cos the label looked good 'Palmer' Wow! Stunned silence as I played it for the first time. Got a massive ribbing from my rock loving big brother who was in the room at the time. Crock of shite...think I'll break that one over my knee too.

This one has to win hands down. It's at the absolute limit for being able to dance to with dignity intact. When I was a lad there was a line drawn in the sand (talc) at which northern dancing became somewhat akin to a crap aerobics class. The line was called.... Heatwave.

Looking for Too Much Of A Good Thing by The Ambassadors when I was a lad. Didn't know who it was by. Bought Too Much Of A Good Thing By Karen Young on Soul Fox. jeeesus. Still got it - played it once. Might get it out and break it over my knee just for the laugh.

Great - sounds like a good place to start out. I've been to the 'Wheel (!) before but not on a northern night. Soul nights transform regular buildings into something else, something magical. Thanks for the heads up.

The deafening silence points to one of two things: 1. It's crap 2. It's so cool and exclusive that SS members aren't even aware of it! I guess I'll have plenty of room on the dance floor

Everybody's flipped this I guess but how good is Hurry Sundown on the back of I Don't Want To Discuss It. Part Soul, part cowboy film soundtrack - WHAT a vocal performance! Love it. With a voice like that I often wonder what other awesome soul records he would have made in the 60s if he'd toned down the good time rocknroll stuff. Imagine him singing on some proper detroit stuff (not that he wasn't surrounded by great musicians at OKeh & Brunswick etc...) You're all going to point out all his great soul sides now aren't you?!!!

So, I'll be going on 5th April. However this is a BIG DEAL for me. My last northern night was in 1980! I've been practising my dancing on the kitchen tiles. Hope the dancing hasn't changed too much as mine is straight out of the late 70s! Anyway if anybody has been it would be good to know what it's like - is it a good place to go to ease myself back on the scene? Just in case you want to tap me on the shouder and say hello I'll be wearing a tight yellow vest with brown piping and patches, a pair of very wide Spencers with a beer towel stitched to the waistband and a pair of polyveldts. Seriously tho - is it worth going? - not all mid tempo stuff and smoothy modern is it?

Hi all, I've got a white promo of Body Chains (1975 - same both sides) that I've had for donkey's and never play. Not taken it out of it's sleeve for 30 years till today. Looking around it's worth getting on for £30ish. See the pics - it's in superb condition (M-) I'm looking for a straight swap for a good clean original US 1st issue classic oldie northern track such as: Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart/Our Love on pink Revilot NF Porter - Keep On Keeping On (Lizard) Mitch Ryder You Get Your Kicks or Breakout on New Voice Spyder Turner - I Can't Make it Anymore (MGM) Williams & Watson Too Late or A Quitter never Wins on purple OKeh A 'played' copy of Kim Weston 'I'm Still Loving You' (Tamla) would be good! It's a new one on me this one, and I quite like it. Each to his own and all that. Intro's a bit dodgy but when it gets under way it's pretty groovy, nice tune etc... but 3 grand?!!!! If it was £25 I'd defo buy a copy Good for my soul to be hearing new (to my ears) tunes after a long break from the scene.

Aaaargh Frank Dell was on my stolen lis - what a record! Maybe this post is gonna cause some pain and very negative feelings - not what our scene is about. Shall we close it? Never lost owt in the post though Robb, that must be a real bummer.

Picture the scene - Chesterfield art college 1982 and my mate Mitch, having been turned on to northern soul by me(!) has asked to borrow some of my 45s so he can tape 'em. So he tapes 30 of my favourite records and leaves them in a tesco carrier bag in my locker....well you can guess the rest. Some chump helped himself all kinds of good stuff - MY good stuff, like NF Porter on Lizard, Dave Love (which I've just replaced!), Jimmie Raye on dark blue KKC which I am sure was an original, even weird sh*t like Jon & Robin on Abnak. I still seethe about this 32 years later. (Hey maybe Mitch didn't put them in my locker after all). I guess there are a lot of people out there with 'hot' stuff in their collections and they seem to be able to sleep at nights. Any particular piece of vinyl that you have had 'taken' from you that really REALLY stings? And what would you do to the knob who took it? Or have you subsequently found a record that used to be yours for sale and tried to get it back? Maybe if there were any way of identifying particular lost records - I don't know, if you were daft enough to write your name on the label rather than the sleeve! we could use the forum to shame people into giving records back! - For example all mine were in cardboard sleeves with 'Stu' in the top right corner (I know, I know....)
